Roland MV-1 Verselab Tutorial: Sample Anything & Everything with the Built-in Mic

- Roland's MV-1 Verselab is the latest in their line of grooveboxes and one with a real point of difference in the market place, especially at this price point. While the Verselab is squarely marketed to vocalists, Mike (definitely not a singer) spotted a detail that excited him - a built in microphone. Here he demonstrates how the mic can be utilized to record anything on hand to add texture and depth to your beats.
This is a return to the MV series for Roland, the last MV, the monstrous MV-8800, hit the market in 2007 but struggled to find its feet in a time where most musicians were enamored by evolutions in computer based DAWs. That said, for many beatmakers, DAWs weren't all that appealing, the tactile experience of using drum pads was essential, and gave the Roland MVs a following as an alternative to the big Akai MPCs.
In 2021, there does seem to be a strong movement to escape the computer again, have Roland made a good call in reintroducing their MV line? What do you think?

I’ve watched loads of MV-1 videos and I’m still yet to make my mind up. Using the mic for percussive elements was the first video to make me think, “yeah that could fit in my workflow” excellent vid!!!
Cheers Trevor, thanks for the feedback
True. I'm with MV-1 for a months, and think yes, why I always looked for a good clap? :)
Your video is the best so far. I've seen some overly technical videos that harp way too much on the specs and the presenter's wishlist, rather than concentrating on what this machine is capable of. and how to use it.
Cheers thanks Eddie
Cool approach for sure
The 404sx has a microphone and a pretty capable preamp. It’s my biggest issue with the 404mk2!!
Fascinating! Great tutorial and very fun to watch and listen. Thanks!! Now I must get on with some MV-1 sampling 🤔😁
Cheers Mike, enjoy your MV-1
This is a great video. I love this idea of sampling random noises and making a song out of it - brilliant. I was initially headed for a MPC One but then the MV-1 sampler/ ability to take guitars or keyboards plugged in/ and the easier workflow (having the sequencer buttons makes more sense) - it's a tough decision.
@@Hooked_on_Gyro I haven't bought either one yet myself! Still toying with Verselab MV1 vs. MPC One
@@Hooked_on_Gyro How do you like it? I bought the MPC One but returned it after 2 days. I just couldn't get along with the workflow (tedious song mode and menu diving) and buggy software (crashed like 3 times).
Thanks for a different take on a MV-1 video! I love mine but I haven't done any sampling yet, after watching your video it seems very simple and I'll try it tomorrow. Thanks!
Does it work? Can u sample the sounds with the mic?
@@saojones1785 Yes
Such soothing vid! I always design my own sound, but never really record my own sounds. I take the mic to accompany MV-1 on vacation now :)
Very good tutorial.
The video sound is pretty good, beyond my imagination
Cheers
nice and easy! thank you 🙏
More mv1 sampling pls.
Those screws needed to be audible in the mix for that _c r o n c h_
Great vid! I love the MV-1. However, I get and error message when I save the sample to a pad. The sample does end up on the pad but still the error message comes up. I have the latest 1.03 firmware so not sure what the deal is. I hope they come with another update soon. Hopefully adding an undo function.
What about this error? Does it work to sample like in the video?
@@saojones1785 Yes, I can sample like the video. That said, it's still very annoying that the error will come up every time you try to assign the sample to a pad. Roland still have not put out an update to fix this issue. I have even emailed Roland about it and they ignored me. They never responded... thnx Roland......don't put out products if you're not willing to fix the bugs and give product support. Fail.
I can’t get mine to work ? I’m following the instructions in the manual and one part says set when to start. I start to record but it stops immediately. It seems so easy on this video. But it’s not working. I wanted it to work straight out if the box I didn’t want to down load the latest version. I’ll keep working on it . Any suggestions? PILTPILTPILT
How do i record my electric guitar to play over drums? No info anywhere on this. Very strange.
Use the vocal track which gives you 13 minutes of sampling
Hi how do you delete a sample? Thanks
Roland needs to put the Fantom touch interface on this and the MC-707... Screw the size...the menu diving on small screens needs to go...
The small
Screen is almost a deal
Breaker. I hate it. I only use my mv1 as a vocal processor because the screen sucks so much
MC 707 or this one?
I had to buy one. Lol idc idc idc idc idc 🤣🤣🤣
