Here's an idea, what if every tier 1 team 'buddied' up with a tier 2 nation, , maybe similar to Ireland and Portugal did at their training camp in July but more involved than that, trained with them at scheduled times, provided feedback and strategies to improve them etc. Basically, every tier 1 nation to 'sponsor' a tier 2 nation.

International tier 1 teams haven't the time pre any tournament to be coaching other international teams when they have limited time to concentrate on themselves.. a rediculous idea.. what will make the so called tier 2 teams get better is more games against other tier 2 teams and tier 1..

Great podcast. One point I'd disagree with Horgan and Haskell about is over SA's style of play. I think their attack has progressed significantly since the last Lions series. For sure, if it's working, they're happy to pummel their way to victory via their forwards (as they did against NZ at Twickenham recently) but their backline attack can also be devastating. Willemse, Arendse, Kolbe, Libbok and Williams are as athletic and quick a set of players as there is in world rugby in my opinion.

It's frankly just lazy analysis. Pundits from the northern hemisphere don't seem to watch the Boks unless they play one of the home nations. So their only references are the Lions series (the Boks' first games of a rugby in a year!) and the 2019 final, which they like to ignore so they remember the semi against Wales. SA hasn't been a kick and crash team for a long time.

My names Kurt Koroi with a radical idea that could be a good topic for discussion.
If we switched the ruling for
    1. Every player is to wear a head gear to minimise the head knocking issues to a less severe outlook but then concentrate on the more severe tackles or head contact. And
    2. If we changed the rule to minimise or restrict every team to only 20 kicks in a match which would then speed up the game for the general viewing.
    Thoughts?

With Farrell I don’t think it’s because he comes from a league background, it’s because he’s lost his edge and Smith is not getting a look in with him being picked automatically. It’s a selection issue, not a background or commitment to England issue.

No one who genuinely cares about the state of English rugby would wish to be unkind to a player who has served the country well in the past, but is showing reason for real concern today. We've one chance to start correction against Fiji and it needs to be emphatic and without historical sentiment. If we don't (and should we wriggle past Fiji) we be ABSOLUTELY ANNHIALATED whomever we meet in the semi-final. Totally dismantled, and it'll set the National game back years. The time is NOW.

It's multifaceted. Partly it's his personality - it's hard for non-Irish to like Sexton, or non-Welsh to like Biggar for the same reason. They're ultra competitive, they wear their hearts on their sleeves and they're prepared to moan or wind people up and behave in a less than gentlemanly fashion in order to win. Not liking him for this is understandable.
The tackling sticks in the craw for many, though I as a lover of physicality like it. It's made even worse because there are a fair few he got away with... not that it's his fault, but it has fuelled the conspiracy theorists.
So add these legitimate, or potentially legitimate personal dislikes, and then amplify it to what Farrell represents to people: he's England's captain, and everyone in the world hates England. He's from RL, the pantomime villain for a lot of Union fans around the world. He plays for Saracens, who everyone loves to hate... and he's Northern which a lot of the southern toryboy England fans hate.
He's the symbol for a lot of vitriol being sprayed from all corners of the globe. There's mass alzheimers from the people who think he can't play 12, or mass stupidity from those who think England's backline will be exciting with only one playmaker. There's mass bias from people who think he's responsible for England being boring (anyone watch England vs Japan with Ford kicking everything away?). There's bias from people who love either Ford or Smith and don't want Farrell at 10 or at all.

Then in 2023 we saw 4 teams blaming the ref: NZ, France, England and Argentina. We also saw England going to extreme lengths to defame Bongi and, unsurprisingly, GBR went to great lengths to defend Curry. I watch the Big Jim show and he provides a far more balanced approach. Farrell is all about gamesmanship and not sportsmanship, that’s why he’s hated. He’s an ambassador of football type of whining and harassing the ref on calls whilst play is going on far less when it’s stopped. You might say that’s his job as captain but he takes it far beyond others. Last World Cup he made a big show of being held around his neck in a maul so the ref would spot it. Many other moments like that and older rugby fans don’t want that coming into the game. If you pundits can’t see that then your bias has blinded you. I’m not from any country in the World Cup and have no horse in the race btw

Not too concerned with Welsh injuries. Part of a world cup, and Wales usually seem to not mind being branded with the 'injury' tag. SA have already lost a few (Marx, Mapimpi), Ireland lost one (Ryan), France quite a damn few. So I wouldn't allow that tag to stick, if it was me. What I am worried about, is the kicking ability and running ability of Argentina - that game is going to be sooooo close, in my opinion. I'd also be worried that the injuries are focused around number 10 (but not the number of injuries). If we lose both 10s, I think we will bump Halfpenny up to full back, and let him kick (which I would NOT mind, personally). But then Costello at 10 in a QF / Semi final is hugeeee.
We will also see all teams go through another 80 minutes plus this weekend, so expected at least another 1 or 2 injuries - and now to key players given the starting lineups / concentration of 'big teams'. But, and I always forget this until it comes around, sometimes the WC really doesn't get started until the knock out stages - which is hard to believe given the amazing rugby already. What a tournament it has been. And shame on 6n / Rugby Championship for not allowing these 'smaller' teams in. Neglect increased support if you like, but at the disadvantage of the entire sport. Whilst football has its foot hard to the ground, and is expanding international competitions at every corner it can.

So, the “Six +2 Nations” (I’ll leave it to others to create a natty title) could be loosely based on the (now abandoned) “15 Core + 1 Invitational” teams on the Sevens circuit.
    (1) 2 invitational teams (logically, Georgia & Portugal) take part in the competition.
    (2) To become a “Core”, an Invitational must finish in the top four (which would generally mean beating 3 Cores - which is a high enough bar to prove pretty conclusively that they deserve a seat at the top table).
    (3) If neither Invitational finishes in the top four, they are replaced the following year (by, presumably, the top two teams in a secondary competition)
    (4) If one Invitational finishes in the top four, they become Core for the following year with the other Invitational and the eighth-ranked team being replaced
    (5) If both Invitationals finish in the top four:
    (a) they both become Core for the following year, with the bottom two dropping out.
    (b) Alternatively, only the higher-ranked becomes Core, the other (plus the eighth-ranked team) dropping out.
Maybe have a similar structure for the Rugby Championship, to include (to start, based on the RWC performance) Fiji & Japan
Of course, unless the incumbents accept the principle of promotion/demotion from the 6N/RC, the whole idea is doomed…

Why does the idea of picking Smith seem such a shock to some people, he is literally one of the most X Factor players we have in the England setup (alongside Arundel) Every time he gets a chance he is unbeliveable and either scores tries or creates tries and he has been doing this out of position at full back! If he had got a chance at 10 he would have been the best performing fly half for England by a mile.. Smith and Arundel are the most destructive attacking threats in the England squad and should be starting in their rightful positions. Playing players out of position is just counter productive and unacceptable especially at a WC. Play your most in form dangerous players in their positions, it is so simple yet SB makes it oh so difficult...

Might sound great, but let's be honest. Rugby in the northern hemisphere is pretty rough at the moment. England coming into this was at an all time low. Financial issues at numerous clubs. Wales the same, with players not getting paid and a loss of loads of contracts. Italy has been having serious issues too, with clubs being wound up and new ones taking their place. If they were to be relegated, any of them, and I include Ireland and Scotland in this. It might be the death blow to the sport in those countries. In which rugby is not in the top sports of any of them. It's also historical. The roots of this home nation's cup. That then expanded to include France in 1910. You just can't kick them out, as they built it to what it is now. If you're looking to add teams, it has to be expansion. Maybe have a play off for the spots, a knock out tournament. I know I would watch it.

    • @jasonwall5012

@@plebius firstly, rugby 8n the Northern hemisphere is growing nicely, just issues in Wales and England, that doesn't count as the whole Northern hemisphere. Secondly, did you miss the part where I said, a play-off series? If you're good enough to win a 3 game series, then you're good enough to play in the 6 nations. The reafor a threat of relegation/ promotion, is what is needed, " WHY you may ask?, well when you watch the 6 Nations, 4th, 5th and 6th spots don't care at the end of the 6 nations. Now if you had a threat of having to play in a 3 game play-off series, for relegation and promotion, than you will play hard till the end. This in turn will create better and stronger competition, also give a route for the European rugby championship clubs, a rout to the 6 Nations, and give something for them tonplay for. That in hand will make them improve.

About Farrell, its not about Farrell actually, its about coaches who make him captain when he lacks the in game leadership skills and by playing him out of position so he is set up to get all this crap. His lack of leadership capability manifests itself in almost every game by his petulance, with his lack of awareness at critical times, by seeing red and by not having the mental dexterity to change the game plan in response to whats happening in a game. Lets take the Samoa game, his interactions with Brace embarrassing, his overrunning the shot clock, and by running the same attacking plays even though Samoa had clearly worked them out and on top of that he looked totally pedestrian in the 12 jersey. None of this is inherently his fault, if he was reigned in by a strong captain and played at 10 we would probably all be a lot happier with him.

I can't think of a single starting England player who had a good game so why the knives are out for Farrell yet the others are seemingly getting a pass I have no idea.
Personaly I like all the England #10s Gord, Farrell and Smiyh and am not that fussed which start or are on bench.
England's performances have nothing to do with who is playing at #10. Currently they are about our forwards who are struggling at the breakdown can't carry and can't provide quick ball. Until that is fixed and the forwards can secure and provide quality ball then who plays at # 10 is irrelevant .

Such a jaundiced view you have of your beloved Rugby. Get down of your high horse there’s nothing special up there 😂😂

I sincerely hope the typical Irish over-confidence doesn't come back and bite them in the ar$e like it traditionally has. This weekend will be fun however it goes!

And Farrell makes for a good pantomime villain...he comes across quite aloof and arrogant, he cheats a bit, but is also very good....

He wouldn't be a pantomime villain if he was arrogant, very good, but very clean; nor would he be a pantomime villain if he was very good and cheated but came across as humble and genuine (like McCaw)...nor would anyone care about him if he was arrogant dirty and a useless rugby player....so the fact that he has all three characteristics makes him a perfect target.

@@therealmrfishpaste Poor tackling technique isn’t cheating, he’s had one red card in the international stage and the action he took didn’t give England any advantage. Cheating suggests premeditation with a goal of gaining an unfair advantage.
Honestly, if you think he isn’t humble, you really don’t know anything about the guy. Do a bit of research and I guarantee you’ll change your mind. Look at the Nigel Owens incident with Farrell, look at his charity work. He’s with his childhood sweetheart and raising a young family. He’s never in the tabloids for the wrong reasons. Take a step back.

@@TheDandob1982 I chose my words carefully...he 'comes across as arrogant and aloof'....so much like Schalk Burger, who was a bastard on the field and gentleman off it....and Nick White, who, is an aggravating irritation on the field, but a really nice guy off it...Farrell's on field demeanor comes across as arrogant and aggravating, so for those who don't know him off the field, that's all they see.
And as far as cheating goes...I remember two consecutive test matches (against SA and AUS) where Farrell did match saving no arms tackles that were certainly deliberate....so deliberate foul play in order to win a game is pretty close to the definition of cheating
But don't get me wrong, I don't dislike the guy, I'm just trying to detail the factors that make it easy for him to be portrayed as a bad guy.

Horgan, what a load of nonsense - 'a class thing'?! I come from as poor a background as you can think of, a lot worse off than poor little Owen, and I've given sh*t about his selection & performances.
We don't like that he keeps getting selected, keeps f-ing things up in defence (apparently his strength), his attacking is always so slow anyway, even his kicking wasn't all there. All while others, like Ford, are performing brilliantly and still get taken off early instead of Farrell.
His silence is filled by the view of his performance, if you want to be more accurate, and if he doesn't like being treated like a twat by the public then try being open and/or nice to the the public... Mind blown 🤯😂
