I’ve always loved the sound design of Hollow Knight I often feel like it’s under appreciated, one of my favorites being the sound effects for taking 2 masks of damage, when you get hit by a normal attack it’s what you’d expect a basic hit sound, but when you get hit by an attack that deals two masks the hit sound is a lot more guttural and heavy as well as muffles the sound for a second, it sounds like it really hurt, I just really love details like that
This video is absolutely amazing. I hate the fact that this subject goes unnoticed. I remember getting to the radiance, and it wouldnt have been so intense without that amazing background theme. I love the different type of video style. Miles posting just makes my day!
One thing that i would love to add is the leitmotifs. Wich is basically when a track appears in other track that has nothing to do but is there to tell a story. And the hollow knight leitmotifs just tell you al the DAMN LORE. for example, the white palace ost is the, uhh, lets say, the salvation theme, it sound in resting grounds, BUT WHY?, well it is because the dreamers are located in resting grounds, because they are part of the plan that the pale king had to save hallownest, it sounds in dung defender theme too, because he is part of the plan too, and there is a lot of examples of that same thing happening with tons of other tracks. The vessels have its theme too, wich is the title screen music theme, it appears at the end of the sealed vessel theme, and its the main melody in the broken vessel theme, because they are all vessels. The path of pain theme is to represent the hollow knight, the being that would save hallownest, it appears in the abyss when you are climbing, in the path of pain, and in the hollow knight fight. The sealed vessel theme represent the unperfect, weak version of the hollow knight, but the pure vessel theme, represents, its absolute form. My english is not the best so, somethings may not be right.
Yeah you are so right about that. I knew about the vessel leitmotifs, but I didn't know there were more. I really like this, they do this in Undertale a lot as well
The best soundtrack in the game has to be sealed vessel. The emotion in the hollow knight battle with him stabbing himself and the fact that this is the end of your journey made me cry
Hollow knight is my favourite game. It has truly had a big effect on my life and gotten me into game development. Thank you Team Cherry can't wait for Silksong!
Something I'd like to add is how the game uses silence. When you get close to a noteworthy boss, the music fades out, letting you know something's about to happen, and making the effect of the boss music kicking in more effective and memorable. Heck, the same thing even happens before you get Dream Nail in Resting Grounds, and before every dreamer. As you pointed out, the Ancient Basin doesn't have music at all, giving the place an overbearing and ominous yet not overtly bad aura. Fitting not only for the content of the area, but also for how deep you are. To quote Cornifer: "Can you feel the weight of the kingdom above? It's a heavy thing alright." It's so deep that nobody has been here recently. No infected husks, and few corpses apart from the vessels. This further adds to its dark and foreboding, yet subtle atmosphere. The only other game I can think of that does this is Don't Starve.
Its honestly strange how I never actually paid attention to most of the ambient music because I was mainly focused on gameplay. But after listening to some ambient music, I was blown away by how good it was!
I will never forget my first encounter with the Hollow Knight. Destroying the chains while the strings get more intense was the perfect build up. The epic boss theme during the second first phases is perfect as well. But then, when the Hollow Knight starts to stab itself and the music gets depressing, that was the best part of the boss for me. Suddenly, I didn’t want to kill it anymore. And the ending had perfect music as well. Hollow Knight has a great soundtrack. I dislike hardly any song of the game but „Sealed Vessel“ has to be my favorite. It made the final boss fight so epic and climactic.
The story telling with the sad violin and him just stabbing himself and alongside that, with how we still interact w him when he does it, it gives more impact rather than "making it a cutscene" because we are also killing him to... release his pain and suffering and thats how amazing hollow knight is with gameplay, atmosphere and soundtrack. Just amazing 👏👏
Nice video again bro, you're so underrated for your quality ! Personally THE music that hits me in the game is Sealed Vessel (Hollow Knight and path of pain theme). Honestly, when i first completed the game (literally 10 days ago, i did tryhard until 112% yes), i didnt understand the lore completely (i did the whole game without spoiling myself about anything) but then i fought the Hollow Knight. The final boss. After 25 hours if i remember correctly, and all the pain. I wanted a final boss, damn i got it, fighting what was containing the infection (rare thing i understood). And then, the music changes suddenly. Oh my gosh. The boss starts to hit itself and i IMMEDIATELY understood, that thing alone made me understand the lore as much as the abyss stuff did. I literally froze until the boss resumed its attacks and i died because i was on the edge of tears. The music switching from a 1v1 final boss to a 2vs1, hollow knight and you vs the infection. And then the build up, the music getting more intense as you're getting closer to free the Hollow Knight from its prison, and then nothing. The first ending, i did it a few more times, it ALWAYS give me chills. The fact that the Hollow Knight helps you kill radiance too btw is so important. This is the only time ever i have seen a final boss (or even a boss) fighting itself and its brillant. Paradoxically, its the reason why this boss is literally my favorite and its not even close (even tho i enjoy radiance fight and sister of battles really much, unpopular opinion i hate nkg except for the theme, keeps killing my pantheon 5 runs). Hollow Knight went from not existing 1 month ago to my 100% top 3 favorite video games if not higher, and its not because of the gameplay nor the cool bosses nor the lore nor the music, but because all of them are synced THAT perfectly and the Hollow Knight is imo the peak of it. (F*ck Markoth). Sorry for writing an essay in your comments btw, cheers for next videos !
I completely agree on your whole story. Sealed Vessel is the perfect track to end off the game, it perfectly sets the stage for the boss, but also makes you feel empathy while fighting the Hollow Knight. It's just perfect. Also thank you so much
I've always felt like the sound design of hollow knight is some of the best out there. Everytime an NPC talks, or a my nail hits something or an enemy makes a sound, my brain just feels so pleased. Then there's the music, which is just a whole entire other can of worms.
man I love this game so much, there are just so many praiseworthy things in HK, no wonder it has such a dedicated fanbase. Fun fact, hollow knight's music is what inspired my father, and partially me, to start his own musical journey :)
great video mr. nugget!! btw fun fact the Resting Grounds track is a perfect example of a 2:3 polyrhythm 😋 it’s one of my favorites for that reason it sounds so cool

Pure Vessel is my fav boss and its probably just because of the parrying sound you make when you triple pogo him, so damn good (also cool music but thats a given)
While I am the slightest bit sadge that Sealed Vessel isn’t talked about here, as it basically warrants its own video, this video is everything I think of plus more. Honestly amazing job.
Great video dude! The music of hollow knight is my favorite aspect of the game so I love it got its own part of the video! I'm still waiting for the vocal chord reveal tho ):
I play a game called sky, it’s music is amazing vibe of peace UNTIL GOLDEN WASTELAND it’s a beatiful way of music changes the way you feel the beat and simple things as beat changes can and will change the mood entirely
I was fighting Hornet (first fight at greenpath) and couldn't get through the fight literally like straight a week and then one day I played it without the music and got through in a couple of attempts
I couldn't agree more with everything you said in this video! I also think that the sound design of this game is simply brilliant. one fight that I think is very underrated, is troupe master grimm, not his nightmare form, but the normal one. because when nightmare king grimm is very intense and scary, the troupe master does a great job of making the fight feel like a dance. for example, this is one of the few bosses that have adaptive music, specifically his music becomes more intense when he performs the pufferfish attack and becomes subdued when he staggers. which combined with the crowds clapping, and the bow at the beginning of the fight, really immerses you in that dancing atmosphere. I could probably tell you about many other examples of great atmosphere in this game that you didn't mention in this video, but for now I don't want to write too much here, so that's it for now.
Ah I see! I knew I was sure that the music would adapt with the progress of the fight somewhere with Grimm, but it was his Troupe Master form where that happened. Yeah I really liked that, missed opportunity to talk about it, but that's okay
After adaptive music I begin to miss LBP 2 and 1 ; it's for me the king of adaptive music even you can play with it , for example wedding theme that begins with creepy vibe then turned into Metal action scene, it's used in running section and Bonus game used it for T-Rex fight moreover I used it in running section from blowing cave from lava and radioactive matter so surprisingly fits all of them and we are talking about an adaptive theme for wedding. I love Hive Knight, Hollow Knight atmosphere, dung defender , hornet godhome and Grimm themes. I goes to gym everyday to put my headphones and train with Grimm music 1 hour mix.
Bro cooked a banger🔥🔥 this is one of my favourite videos!! This is an unpopular opinion but I like the crystal peaks ost cause it makes the place feel abandoned and mysterious. It also feels like my creativity is flowing.
This is one of my favourites too And I really like Crystal Peaks as well, I was planning on talking about it, but I scrapped it to make the video have a better pace.
your points in the beginning are very accurate. I think music and sounds are way more important in EVERYthing. Just like in filmmaking. Music and sound design make your film high quality or not.
Although this might be different for a lot of other people, when I first arrived at the city of tears, it felt like I beat the game, like I can progress. I think it felt like that because the city of tears connects to a lot of areas, there is also a lot of progression in it. It’s relaxing theme which complemented the excitement with a calm that nullifies it, I personally sat down with Quirrel for 30 minutes to enjoy the new rainy atmosphere to gain my bearings after arriving.
You probably explained all this stuff better than most experts on music theory would, as you dont know anything about music theory lol. But, knowledge of music theory and the ability to recognise overlaps between tracks can help understand the lore better, and get new findings about the lore. Now, being quite adapt at music theory myself, there are a few things I'd like to note: The dream realm has a little thought put into the notes: there is a hint of the city of tears theme in the notes at times. Perhaps because you, as the player, have been wondering (and thus dreaming) about city of tears for the entire start of the game. A different interpretation of this can be that it confirms the knight too is not a pure vessel, as its dreams contain thoughts of the most wondrous place it has visited. Staying on the topic of city of tears, the soul sanctum not only uses a spooky instrumentation of the city of tears theme, it also uses a shorter, differently instrumentated and more direct version of the background in the city of tears song, as the background for its own song. This gives a deeper confirmation of the origin of the bugs from the soul sanctum, being the city of tears. With all that said, I still am not done talking about the genius behind the world-building of the city of tears OST. The alto violin coming in to join Marissa in the performance of the main melody is a callback to the main theme. In the main theme, after a while there is an alto violin that joins the main instrument (being the piano). The fact that this is present in both of the most important parts of the soundtrack (area wise) is just amazing to me. In order to avoid doing a deep analysis of every theme like I did with city of tears I'll get the most important points I want to make in here. First of all, the use of background chords and vocals on top of the way those things are orchestrated are the things that keep the soundtrack from being, as my trumpet teacher would describe it, flat. These background sounds add a lot of depth, and their importance should not be underestimated. Secondly, I want to point at the difference in usage of brass and drums in area music and boss music. As brass and drums are known to create an epic sound, rather than a calm sound, they are mainly used in boss music. Both (mainly drums) are also used to create rather calm sounds in HK as well (like crystal peaks. Most of that area is calm). Finally, and this is a very miniscule detail, the music gets quite close to being metal in the 'egg' phase of the grimm and nightmare king grimm bossfights. I think this is the coolest usage of adaptive music in the entire game, as it is the most intense (and difficult) part of the boss for most people. Anyway, hope yall enjoyed reading this essay lmao
I feel honoured to get my approval of an actual music expert hahaha :) There are so many little things put into the music and sound design that this video could've literally been 4 hours hahaha. I indeed heard the City of Tears theme in Soul Sanctum, but I didn't know it was used in the dream track as well. Thanks for your comment and enlightening us with your knowledge There's just so much cool stuff to uncover and talk about
@@MilesNugget I wouldnt go as far as calling myself a musical expert, more like a hobbyist that might turn into a prof in the future. Anyway, Im glad to hear you appreciate the information!
Hey milesnugget, quick question, what do you like better? 1. Your hat in between the horns of the knight or 2. Your hat going over your horns of the knight like thorns are going through your hat. (for fanart)
I can't elieve it's here! Also what's your favorite OST? Mine is nkg Edit: Also trivia question what is the 77th pixel that appears on screen in a world record speedrun of Hollow Knight?
It's hard to pick a favourite, they are all so good🥹 I'll go with NKG as well, it’s really good but I also really like resting grounds and Dung Defender Also it is the blue pixel
yeah I would say dirtmouth i think is my favorite just because i was there sooo much after every single time. Normally to buy something new. Seeing all the friends i made along the way. The music was there the whole time.
Outer wilds does this for me and honestly more. As you flot through space with nothing but you breath and your jet pack rockets. Mmmmm that’s some good stuff right there. Hk is good too of course
Thank you I do not recommened my editing software, it has a lot of annoying glitches. So I think premier would be the best yes :) (probably just the newest one right?)
There are themes that reminds me when i played specific levels or fight specific boss in games that i played 14 -18+ years ago. Some were nice and funny, others were scarier, but at the end, the effect is the same: Nostalgic feelings returns. When i play games i listen to the music, but rarely i listen very careful the music. For Example, when i fight for the very first time Nightmare King... i genuinely thought: I'm doom. Thank to your video i understood better the ambiental music of the areas of the game. When I'll return to play the game i will truly enjoy the mudic. P. S. The Greenpath Theme BlueVersion is also a MasterPiece. P.P.S. Deepnest is and always will be the most hated area in my heart. Not because is bad designed, because is not, it's but because i am always, and i say, always, TERREFIED to explore Deepnest, even with a lots of life and equipment upgrade achieved and the map learned. Deepnest itself is the Boss who defend Herah. This is why we don't fight one before reach her.
11:40 Every single one of those jumps synced perfectly with the music
This is a way too good of a discovery😭😭😭

The grimm troupe is the best boss music by a mile in my opinion, very unique and I like how the choir comes in when he becomes a pufferfish.
And if you play on a controller with rumble enabled, the pufferfish part is an adrenaline rush despite being so easy every time.
@@WhatISawJuly7th yeah it is kinda funny that the most intense part musically is the least tense part gameplay wise.
So the music IS tied to the progress of the fight? I wasn’t really sure, but it always indeed seemed to line up nicely
@@MilesNugget I think it only applies to normal grimm, not nightmare king. Normal grimm’s song turns into metal when he’s a pufferfish.

your points in the beginning are very accurate. I think music and sounds are way more important in EVERYthing. Just like in filmmaking. Music and sound design make your film high quality or not.
Exactly, bad sound design and music can ruin the atmosphere
Only hollow night music is liked by everyone it’s so amazing also amazing vid like always❤
Thank you so much
I think you can make your own video game sound milesnugget

The legend says that silksong is coming this year
Remember, silksong's release date outlived queen elizabeth and gta 6 not existing memes
Which legends are telling you that? They are lying
Watching this while taking a break from wondering why i suck at watcher knights.
Tip number 1: Get back to that fight once you are overpowered af
Tip 2: Descending dark like you have never descending darked before

Ain’t no way bro went through an entire 34 min video without talking about sealed vessel 😂😢
I did😢
Once again AMAZING video! But I'm still waiting for that lever ranking tho.
Thank you so much
No lever ranking tho
@@MilesNugget why just why 😭😭
You were so right, this IS a banger
for banger
Although this might be different for a lot of other people, when I first arrived at the city of tears, it felt like I beat the game, like I can progress. I think it felt like that because the city of tears connects to a lot of areas, there is also a lot of progression in it. It’s relaxing theme which complemented the excitement with a calm that nullifies it, I personally sat down with Quirrel for 30 minutes to enjoy the new rainy atmosphere to gain my bearings after arriving.
City of tears is the moment the game really opens up and it's an overwhelming experience of amazingnes and gorgeousnes basically 🐐
You probably explained all this stuff better than most experts on music theory would, as you dont know anything about music theory lol. But, knowledge of music theory and the ability to recognise overlaps between tracks can help understand the lore better, and get new findings about the lore.
Now, being quite adapt at music theory myself, there are a few things I'd like to note:
The dream realm has a little thought put into the notes: there is a hint of the city of tears theme in the notes at times.
I feel honoured to get my approval of an actual music expert hahaha :)
There are so many little things put into the music and sound design that this video could've literally been 4 hours hahaha. I indeed heard the City of Tears theme in Soul Sanctum, but I didn't know it was used in the dream track as well. Thanks for your comment and enlightening us with your knowledge
There's just so much cool stuff to uncover and talk about
@@MilesNugget I wouldnt go as far as calling myself a musical expert, more like a hobbyist that might turn into a prof in the future. Anyway, Im glad to hear you appreciate the information!

Hey milesnugget, quick question, what do you like better? 1. Your hat in between the horns of the knight or 2. Your hat going over your horns of the knight like thorns are going through your hat. (for fanart)

Outer wilds does this for me and honestly more. As you flot through space with nothing but you breath and your jet pack rockets. Mmmmm that’s some good stuff right there. Hk is good too of course
I really want to play outer wilds, it sounds really good Definitely planning on buying that
Yoo im early here this video is amazing just one question what app do you use to edit and if it is premier what year and version
Thank you
I do not recommened my editing software, it has a lot of annoying glitches. So I think premier would be the best yes :) (probably just the newest one right?)
NKG has the best boss music or one of the best boss music I've ever heard

THE GOAT DELIVERS🐐🐐🐐
Thank you so much man, I feel honoured
And yes, DEEPNEST WILL ALWAYS BE AWFUL🕷🕷🕷
