    Marvelous! A slight fiery warmth to the sound. IMHO, the French contrabassoon is and has always been underrated and less known. Thank you for sharing this fabulous instrument and showing everybody the difference.

      Sorry for my ignorance. What Ravel was that, the piano concerto for the left hand? I play a Fox contra; I’m impressed and pleased with Howard’s sound on the Buffet.

      Thanks. I have it in an excerpt book; I’ll dig it out soon and learn it. I’ve played the other piano concerto(G Major), but not this one.

      I think I may prefer it's timbre other the classic bassoon.
      Which could be my novelty bias, since the instruments don't seem to be different enough to produce noticeably distinct timbres*.
      *Color of sound (not pitch alone)

    Nice to see someone giving Ravel a shout-out. I don't remember the story, but I think it goes that a ww1 soldier lost his right hand during the war, which sucked because he was a concert pianist. He commissioned Ravel to write him musical pieces that were solely for the left hand.

    Tougher and dense and thinner are fairly accurate for most French that I have met, while traveling abroad…and who doesn’t love that sound!

    This contrabassoon has some good sound. But what helps make the sound is the person who's playing it. And it matters how the person plays it, and he did good being able to make the notes sound nice.

    What is the lowest note the contrabassoon can achieve?
    edit: Bb2 apparently.
    In pitch it can produce 32.7 Hz

    I much prefer this style of contrabassoon than any other. Its the only contrabassoon I’ve heard that has a clear tone without being muddy and grumbly

    At the first moment I saw it I thought "oh dang... it's beautiful..."
    I mean, look at that dark brass bell, look at its soft coloured wood, look at the keys that melt in so perfectly in the instrument... I swear I'm loving this more for its look than its sound

    I had never realised that there were different types of contrabassoons. My friend played bassoon in high school, and in about year 10 started with the contrabassoon. Hers was obviously the german-style one. But wow, had I forgotten just how those bass notes could hit you in your bones!

    I’m so ignorant. I didn’t even know what a contrabassoon was, but after hearing it, I am sure I have heard it before. It’s a beautiful instrument.
    Isn’t it amazing how many instruments there are in the world. Whenever I meet a musician, I am always curious to learn why of all the instruments in the world, why did they choose that one? It’s fascinating. Sometimes they join the school band and there’s no tuba player and they become one.
    Anyway I want to learn more about this instrument now.

    Seems to me that it makes a lot of practical sense to use metal for the final bend in the body.
    Does anyone know why the German system primarily uses wood there?

    For anyone curious what he means by the french sound, the french bassoon is known for it's "buzzier" and warmer sound, especially in comparison to the much more common german bassoon. This french contrabassoon similarly sounds different to the german contrabassoon
