The Rise & Fall Of Concorde

  • Concorde, for 27 years, was arguably the pinnacle of commercial aviation. The jet traveled at over 1350mph and changed the perception of travel forever.
    The plane was able to fly from London to New York in around 3 hours, on a flight today this would take 8 hours. The plane was ultimately an incredible achievement, which unfortunately suffered many setbacks which eventually led to its slow death.
    This video looks back at the development, operations, and retirement of this iconic aircraft.

    She was beautiful! I will never forget the sight of seeing her fly over, land and take-off. They used to fly Concorde into Toronto (YYZ) in the summer twice a week and I saw her many times.
    Oh and you forgot to mention that she had to have her name spelled the French was of Concorde (with the E) at the insistence of the French Government, or they would not be involved in the project.

    • @r12004rewy

      Typical French reaction with the E, the French were instrumental in permanent grounding by Airbus withdrawing the Certificate of Airworthness, Air France poor management and maintenance also contributed to the crash. BA could of kept Flying Concorde for at least another 10 years, but the French Didn't

    Concorde was the pinnacle of beauty and romance. The get a ride on her, passing the Mach 2 target was the wish of so many people across the world, and achieved by few.
    The modern attempts, by comparison are nowhere near as beautiful, much smaller, and aimed at the elite. Considering most of the hard work was done 50+ years ago, there's not much bragging to be done. Far less of an achievement today with technologies 50 years more advanced, there's little excitement in it. With what the modern aims are, I seem little more than a military fast jet with civilian paint schemes.
    However, if money wasn't everyone's first consideration, and more people willing to take the risks without fear, we could see the likes of a revamped SR-71 adjusted for civilian life, and expanded for larger gross take off weight. Or maybe, Concorde itself brought up to 21st century standards. Not too hard to imagine, but too hard to fund.

    Although the Concorde had just one severe crash the problems with the tires couldn’t be solved. Delta wings are very efficient at high speeds but don’t create a lot of uplift. That’s why the Concorde needed a huge pitch angle to be able to start. Due to that there was always a lot of pressure on tires and fuselage. There are some other cases of Concorde tires exploding, but the pilots always managed to land safely afterwards. In July 2000 a Concorde crashed because of a metal strip from a DC-10 lying on the runway. It ripped apart the tire and the tire fragments caused the fuel tanks behind it to explode. After this incident engineers thought about strengthening the fuselage and the tires, but dismissed this idea due to the high weight increases they would’ve meant.

    • @RoyalMela
      @RoyalMela 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. A metal wear strip from an engine. Concorde ran over it, tire exploded and debris hit bottom of the wing. That caused the wing tank to rupture and leak fuel. Landing gear was also hit and retracting the gear was impossible, slowing plane down. Fire started with sparks from damaged landing gear wires. Eventually the fire damaged the wing causing it to lose lift and plane rolled and hit the ground. Wing tanks were also more full than usual, causing the rupture to be larger than ever thought possible. Many things went wrong that day, and even one of those things happening, they would have been able to land safely at Le Bourget Airport.

      Easy answer: Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport during its grand opening in 1973. I know because i lived in Dallas for twenty years and had watched Concorde landing and taking off there from 1978 to 1980. Interesting tidbit: DFW was only airport in the United States that allowed the Concorde to take off at full power until it reached the cruising altitude (IAD, MIA, and JFK didn't allow) because the airport was surrounded by empty land in the 1970s. I never forget to this day how deafening the Concorde take-off was and how beautiful the afterburner flame cones out of the engines!

    So in the 20th century we had the Space Shuttle, Concorde & faster subsonic aircraft. In the 21st century, we have, em..., er..., the 737-Max & P&W engines that fall from the sky...

    • @Delta2D2
      @Delta2D2 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Arthur Humphreys I did mean them both as separate entities; Boeing forcing a square block into a round hole. And P&W’s recent 4 issues.

    • @Delta2D2
      @Delta2D2 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Arthur Humphreys Mmm... The 737-Max was grounded for 18 months and the pilots were found not to be at fault, since they followed ‘Boeing training & procedures’, where Boeing didn’t mention MCAS.
      As for the P&W engines: In light of the problem, these aircraft were grounded, since the cause was metal fatigue in the fan blades, which was not raised by P&W previously. Therefore, it wouldn’t be fair to blame each airlines maintenance.
      In both cases; it’s really a case of, if it’s not in the manual/guidelines , you don’t know it’s there, which is why the manufacturer’s have been held accountable.

      In the 20th century, "we" didn't really have those things. Very few people flew on a Concorde. There's a recurring sense of nostalgia about what it was like flying 20+ years ago, where the comfort enjoyed by a lucky few 1st class passengers are assumed to have been typical for passengers as a whole. I know better, I've been a passenger since the 1970's and remember how uncomfortable, time consuming and exhausting an experience it was, tolerated because it beat the alternative. Today, it's cleaner, safer and more available. We didn't have the 737 MAX story...because tolerance for aviation dangers were much higher. A 737 MAX story wouldn't have gotten the same attention back then.
      As for the Space Shuttle, we didn't really have that either. As initially described, STS was supposed to be a low-cost alternative to expendable launchers, with orbiters capable of 100 flights. In fact, between development and launch costs, it cost $450 million to launch a shuttle on the average. As for a 100-flight life cycle, there were only about 135 flights for the entire fleet, with Discovery leading the fleet by flying only 39 missions. The shuttle was itself a step-down in expectations from the Apollo era, with missions to Mars and a permanent presence on the moon.
      21st century technology is both far more sophisticated and accessible than that of the 20th century.

    No mention of the ever increasing maintenance costs? And what about the 60+ cases of tires exploding on takeoff?

    • @InTeCredo
      @InTeCredo 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So? That's dumbest argument I've ever heard!
      The maintenance cost always increases as the airplane ages, not only for Concorde but for EVERY airplane from Airbus, Boeing, McDonnell Douglas, Lockheed, Embraer, Bombardier, etc. That's why the airways try to keep the average of fleet age under 10 years old or so. Virtually, 100% of Concorde parts comes from the same material that other airplanes have. Nothing exotic or unobtanium.
      The tyre disintegration event is common for many airplanes, not just Concorde, anyway. Let's do the math: 60 over 27 years of operations worked out about 2.2 blowouts per year, which is way below the average for other airplanes. Ok, fun factor: how many times have Concorde engine exploded like ones on Boeing 737, Boeing 777 (recently), and Airbus A380? None.

    Air France aircraft that crashed was over loaded over fuelled in poor condition and the pilots made big mistakes. The aircraft design itself was not really at fault.

    • @dahorn100011
      @dahorn100011 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't think so. It was a rogue piece of metal left on the runway by another airliner that punctured the fuel tank.

      @@dahorn100011 That’s what the French investigators concluded, but they’re not exactly unbiased since at the time Air France was government owned and operated. I don’t buy into most conspiracy theories, but there is lots of evidence that Air France was solely to blame for the crash. The firefighters on the airport reported seeing flames far sooner during the takeoff than the Continental debris was found. The British investigators were restricted from viewing much of the wreckage, even though they were supposed to be equal partners in the whole program. However, one British investigator noted that a bushing from the left landing gear was missing from the wreckage. The absence of that bushing would have misaligned the wheels, contributing to increased drag and premature tire wear. The flight crew opted to depart overweight, with a tailwind, from a runway in poor condition, and forced the plane into the air far slower than normal. The flight engineer shut down an engine while the plane was still too slow, without consulting the captain.

    New SST may have to find away of going Electric to avoid the noise, but this may well be 30 or 40 years from now, to get the battery design for the range. Sadly, I doubt I will be here to see this. The Delta Wings will just be huge batteries in the sky.
