14:14 THISSSS omg I was so hung up on making sure I know where to story goes and I often blank out. This is when I realize plotting at some point has to stop and just write the goddamn book and just let my characters take me there lol. Almost done my first draft and watching you discuss how you finish your book is so motivating!
Lovely, gorgeous Thick book! Congratulations that you have it out on paper and holding its heftiness... ((I love paper, seeing this chunky book is so satisfying))
Congratulations on finishing your draft!! (I’m still working on mine still on chp8), and thank you for the generous offer to edit/review our first chp, hopefully to get picked 🙏🏼🩵
6:50 is soo truee😂😂 I've written 100k in 8 months with a 9 to 5 but i did only 50k during the pandemic when i was at home all day. I low-key think the secret is rage. When the drudgery dawns on me and i feel my author dreams slipping away, something inside just snaps and i turn into '95 Michael Jordan on the page😂😂😂
I love that you were able to be surprised by your ending, and that you instinctively knew what it had to be vs. what you'd expected it to be. I think it can be hard to go against what we think our story is "supposed" to be, whether according to genre tropes or according to the originating ideas that we might feel so beholden to in the story that we're afraid to change them. But when they work better in a different way, that's not a disservice to the original idea, it just means the original idea helped us get to the one that fit even better in the end.
aaahh i just randomly clicked on your vid and GIRL my jaw dropped when you said what type of book youre writing! because me too! and when you said it also has a queer subplot I literally yelled no way lol. mine is a victorian/gothic family drama/whodunnit/mystery with a queer love story. so yeah i was meant to find your video 🥰
Oh boy do i! My faves are Rebecca by Daphne duMaurier, and We have always lived in the castle by Shirley Jackson. Gallant by ve schwab, and anything by Laura Purcell
97k words seems reasonable. Does it REALLY need to go up just for extra context? Or should it be revised? Just a thought. Unless it’s a crazy multi saga fantasy!
How do you plan on publishing this if you do? I worry that this could be too long for querying. Oh also because you are not U.S. based and would have a different perspective to show in the industry.
~100k words is usually fine for querying! it might be edited down for publishing, but authors get a bit too hung up on word count because there's so much fear being thrown around online about long projects, but typically, if it's not an alarming word count (like 200k for a YA romance) you should be fine! and ill be querying in the UK as that's where I'm based :)

Thank you!
I love gothic horror. Do you have any recommendations??
Oh boy do i! My faves are Rebecca by Daphne duMaurier, and We have always lived in the castle by Shirley Jackson. Gallant by ve schwab, and anything by Laura Purcell
@@theplottery Thanks, I’ll definitely check out those. I personally recommend The death of Jane Lawrence and the Silent Factory by Bridget Collins
Dracula is a good famous one too!

Just a thought. Unless it’s a crazy multi saga fantasy!
I think it will need to go up around 5-10k words! Nothing crazy, and should be fine lengthwise for a historical novel
