I have used Upwork for years, actually from 2013 (It was ODesk that time) , It took me more than 3 months to get first project even after constantly applying everyday. It is difficult as hell when you are unexperienced, have no reviews plus you have less to no skills.
I would say experiment with proposals writing, make it personalized as much as it can be, have one or two portfolio items to show and target less paying work in first few days, like fix this for $5, it can give you a 5 star review quickly.

You are totally right about this Harry. Freelancers are looking for simple work and not complex work. Because the reason is simple - "Nobody wants to make a Billion Dollar Project" as a freelancer. If i want to create a very complicated system like Ola, Uber or Google Drive. I will either demand a CTO position in the company after that project is ready and also stock options and a little ownership in the company. Getting a Billion Dollar Project Idea made by freelancer is not a good idea, because the freelancer will never give you quality code for that. It is like "making cheap biryani" because you only have limited amount of money to make the biryani.

This is what I tell people! I started chatbot marketing (less demand and less supply) but yes, it is not crowded. I am having skills and it is easy to get highlighted among 5-20 freelancers, compared to other fields which are already crowded. I started in April, earned $10 in the whole month, and now in September alone, I have earned more than $1000 and also got Top Rated badge on Upwork. As everyone says, consistency is the key, it is.

I have done freelancing & it's bad in India. You can't start as a beginner/intermediate of the skill, you need total expertise & hunt for high paying clients who know some technical stuff or have previously hired someone else for similar projects.
"DON'T EVER" take up projects from people who literally don't know any technical stuff or are a local business owner's, they will harass you & they don't understand quality or efforts. And will make u do more & will be hesitant to pay.
Find US clients or firms who deal with such projects on regular basis.

IMO python is very easy to learn language, whereas c++ is a bit complicated. But you needn't worry because the fundamentals of all programming languages are same. So learn loops, string, if else statements, properly. Then u can look into the usecases of the languages and pick your interests.
