    i didnt know there was a name for this! part of what helps me in my recovery is the idea of "do it like a cat would" which is to say, eat when hungry, sleep when tired, interact with people when affectionate etc etc. so its nice to have a name for it

    even people without ED can't eat intuitively most of the time. Most people eat when the clock tells them to, not when the body does and that culture is kind of awful if you think about it

    • @Katimorton

      Agreed! But we can work to change that little by little :) xxoo

      I have also learnt to eat at set times, as I cannot eat intuitively due to being on ADHD medication since I was 6. The lack of hunger feeling as a side effect, combined with understimulation, means that if I don't eat at set times, I'll eat extremely sporadically. In this case, it wouldn't necessarily be bad to not work on (unnoticed) cues, I hope

    • @Tinyflower1
      @Tinyflower1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Angela Boersma That's different though. What I meant is society forcing this on us since childhood and children being threatened with punishment if they don't eat up even though they aren't hungry etc. That teaches children to suppress their intuition about food

      Cookie Panda I understand what you mean. Also very relatable for me, sadly

    • @aliciaw4070
      @aliciaw4070 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Cookie Panda An alternative to forcing children to finish everything is to make them eat a little bit of everything (so they get the nutrition that each of their veggies give). I feel that this is the spirit of what most parents are actually trying to achieve, so it might help to reframe that voice in your head this way. Also remember that you can always put the food in the fridge and eat it another day, so it's not getting wasted.

      Kati you also did a fantastic job explaining about high functioning autism in one of the video I saw you had. Here in Minnesota, I got diagnosed with high functioning autism at a place called Fraser about 4 months ago and I know now why I been going through what I been going through. It would explain why I'm very much into IT and computer programming. A therapist here at the buffalo high school told my dad that I was probably on the spectrum but he never bothered to act on it. I'm glad I took the initative myself at the young age of 23.

    I appreciate the principles of food journaling, stating to your body what you’re thankful for, and emotional and mental health with food. At the same time we have to believe that there are things about some concoctions that we call food that are bad. Our hormones aren’t always telling us what our bodies need because there may be too much or too little of them such as leptin and insulin. There are also things like mono sodium glutamate that trick the body into wanting more of the food we know it contains. Diets can often bring balance of these hormones. Intuitive eating is too simple and ignores way too many variables.

    Hi! I overcame an eating disorder about 25 years ago and I'm living proof it can be done! I had bulimia from 16 to 30! I basically eat only when I'm hungry and I don't judge foods as good & bad! I remember constantly judging food as good & bad in my past and my mind was set up to binge on those foods that I thought I could never have like pizza, fries and ice cream & cake!! I listen to my body and stop eating before I get full! There are people I know that have been on one diet after another and it has never worked for them! Intuitive eating may be a little hard in the beginning but it gets easier as time goes by.

    The intuitive eating strategies are a little tricky and I really need to go creative to make my future clients to avoid guilty. Most of intuitive eatring is mental. Sometimes when we eat a salty meal (more sodium), it creates a disbalance with potassium so it could make you crave for something sweet

      Great topic!!! I can get out and do things but it hurts sometimes. I was in the house a lot more a few years ago and come winter, I try not to leaven expect for work. Winter hurts! I'd like to see this very much. I can only say, video games saved my life! Writing is also wonderful as is reading, jigsaw puzzles, Kati's videos and so forth. xoxoxoxox Chronic pain is horrid! I'm writing an essay about it for my course.

    • @SuperStrangSshadow
      @SuperStrangSshadow 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bins: It's sad that so many people is struggling with this but also good to know that we are not alone about. Sometimes I can go out and do errands but the bad things about it is the next day I need a pyjamasday cause I'm so tired of the day before. And some days I don't have the energy to go out of the house at all. I do a lot of video games too. High five. And I do a lot of coloring. Still I can't help but envy the normal people sometimes doing normal stuff. :/ Good luck with the essay. Sounds interesting and it is important to make people aware that we are not lazy people but people with invisible struggles.

    I suffer from a combination of eating disorders. Binge eating and Avoidant or Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (I’m also a super taster). I’m now working with a homeopath/PA, who has helped people, mostly children, with similar issues. This video was very interesting to me as I now understand the methods she’s using with me more. I thought she was nuts when she didn’t restrict me from eating the ‘junk food’ I love. It’s the first time I have seen someone about my eating disorders who didn’t immediately take those foods away from me (which always led me to crave it more and binge secretly).

    Beautifully broken down. I've started to thank the old body for a few things. Seeing and hearing and such. I don't have a terrifically well oiled machine of a body but it's there and it's okay. Trying 'scary' foods is turning out to be quite a delight. My digestion is coping and I'm taking it slowly as my fear is getting stomach migraines. I know that I crave all sorts of things and they are all diverse and wonderful. Thank you Kati! Thank you Sean. xoxoxoxox

    thank you so much, kati!
    i’m working on my recovery from my restrict-binge eating disorder, and it’s definitely not an eating process. when my eating disorder started, i had the mentality that i “wasn’t good enough” and i “needed control”. i became really angry and mean to my friends because i felt so frustrated that my body was making little to no changes. everyday i would eat little to no food, and then binge a lot during the night out of hunger and frustration. it got to a point in the summer where i ate two lollipops everyday whilst idolising malnourished bodies that i considered were beautiful. in that time i lost 7 pounds in within 4 days.
    however, one day i was able to put my thoughts aside to go to a stage show with my internet friends as well as my irl friends. i had so much fun, and i recognised that people loved me for who i am, and not what i look like. i decided to go vegetarian so that i can still have that “control” feeling, without it being too abusive.
    today i still feel really insecure about my body and i even have mental breakdowns about it every week. sometimes my breakdowns are out of disbelief that i actually tried to destroy myself by not eating, or about how i’ve lost the fight of me gaining control and losing weight.
    one day i aspire to look at myself and smile, and not overthink my meals. xx

    Kati, I’m new to your channel, but I just want to say thank you. I’ve... I’ve felt insanely out of control and afraid since my ED has gotten less manageable. I’ve gotten a lot of comfort from your videos. Sometimes I don’t know what thoughts are MY thoughts and what are ED thoughts. I don’t know if I’m hungry because I’m sad or if I’m actually hungry, or if I’m binging or just regular eating. If I eat anything that I want, I’ll just gain all the weight back

I’ve been eating out of boredom (maybe anxiety too) for the last two years so I’ve gained 20 lbs. I find it difficult when family expect me to eat a meal they prepared after I've been over eating when trying to intuitively eating. But its partly because I still tell myself certain amounts at certain times is 'over eating'. Like Kati said it's just energy we need. And even if we have more than we need/want we still deserve to forgive ourselves and carry on doing what we love in life, unphased

    • @mmtruooao8377
      @mmtruooao8377 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I do this too, I think the major issues with it for me are mindfulness and availability. If I'm surrounded by processed food, sweets, etc. Then I overeat and I feel guilty and dirty (I know I shouldn't because it continues the cycle but it clearly isn't healthy). So if im around supportive messages and healthy foods (nuts, berries, beans, etc.) then I feel better (so even if I eat more I feel okay). The other thing is, I dissociate and don't notice if I'm eating too much or little, so i think doing things like Kati mentioned (consciously evaluating what you feel) would help a lot with that. I prefer sticking to structured eating habits (i.e. I'm in college, so I eat breakfast as soon as I wake up, lunch in my only break, and dinner an hour after I get back to my dorm..... this doesn't work well in summer though).

    I feel that my binge eating was largely the result of restricting too much. I really struggle with intuitive eating because food has been the way I manage stress/anxiety for such a long time - even to the point where I feel hungry when I'm stressed. I know that calorie counting isn't encouraged during recovery but I think at the start it can be a good way to keep on top of what you're eating. Thanks for the video Kati :) xx

    This is really great! Even for someone like me who doesn't have an eating disorder. I am a little bit underweight, and though I make an effort to change that, it's not an easy task. Oftimes when I'm hungry I don't really feel motivated to eat, or food doesn't really appeal to me fsr though I am hungry. Or I get distracted by all kinds of stuff and just forget to eat/procrastinate eating. I'm trying everyday to get enough food inside of me and take good care of my body, though, and this video is an extra inspiration to keep going with that :) thank you

    My biggest take-away: food isn’t good or bad.
    Every food serves a purpose in our lives.
    This made me think of simply having preference based on what I like and my personal intentions for myself. A subtle yet profound breakthrough. Thank you 🙏🏽😊
    And... what if all of my emotions have a place and serve a purpose in my life too??? 😉 what if instead of being overly active in trying to control my experiences aka the people / places & things that cause me to feel a certain way, I can simply observe what I’m feeling, why I feel it, and explore the question do I want to create the experience of feeling a certain feeling again or not? (Be accountable, take action to care for myself, change me if need be)
    Thank you for your kindness and generosity. This type of caring has been / is extremely elusive. You are appreciated 😊❤️🌹

    So because my son with SPD I have learned about the sense "introception" (or the sense of the internal state of the body). He never truly "feels" full so over eating so we have to be an outside source for him in this way. He also struggled with potty training and feeling pain. So I think what you said about learning your ques is very important he has to learn how his body feels when he is truly hungry and truly full.

Their juices and the fruit itself..its all the things right now. Everybody says it too much sugar, too many carbs. Newsflash I get sick and very mean without carbs. I can not go that low carb, keto way. My body didn't like it. I quit eating fruit for years. Now I can't be without it. I want to be healthy for myself and look the best I can. Be my best. Thank you for this. I just heard someone I follow say they are doing this way if eating because its not a diet. I've been on a diet since I was 8. Mom gave me pills to cut my appetite, seriously she did. In this season of pandemic I'll use it to help myself with more mindful eating, and listening to what my body wants. 💗🙏🍊🍎

      I hear you! I recently ate some oranges that were so juicey and delicious. It feels crazy to me to say that fruit is not good for you 🍊🍉🍎👍🏻

    this was so helpful kati! i’m finding intuitive eating to be sooo hard especially when i’m at work because i take ritalin and that totally messes up my hunger cues on top of my ED. I know now that medication aside, i still shouldn’t try to be listening to my hunger cues, i just need to stop what i’m doing at lunch time and go eat!

    Wow. So I have been rolling my eyes every time you say “intuitive Eating” thing because I don’t have an “eating disorder” but holy crap!!! If I could do these things - just being intuitive to my body in general I think it would help me kick mental illness’s ass!

    Great video! I have read about intuitive eating today and I discovered that my way of eating has a name! People often say that I'm lucky because I eat what I want and I'm slim. And I'm surprised because why should I be fat? I can't eat more than I need, that's something natural, right? Food is my friend, calories is something I need to function and I like my body although don't spend too much time thinking about it.

    I'm a pretty healthy eater. Today I just had 2 slices of pizza, some chips and some dessert today. I don't feel bad at all. I deserved it. Mainly because I actually wanted it.👀

    I follow Intuitive Eating and I agree with what you're saying, and I also recommend people learn more about it, as it's important to note that certain medications can interfere with your hunger, for example, when I was prescribed Prozac I lost a lot of weight because it prevented me from feeling hungry. At the other end, Mirtazapine made me constantly hungry and I had to stop taking it because I was gaining too much weight. As I have to take some form of medication, I've devised an eating plan, which enables me to stay mostly craving-free, but still allows for variety. It's a very odd feeling to be hungry but not craving anything in particular 😁

    Thanks Kati this video was very helpful I strugle because I was under weight all the way up until early 20s i found it easy to starve myself when i hit 23 i got on mental health meds and got over weight they made me constantly hungry but then switched meds and got really underweight again then changed meds and got a drinking problem and got big again . Im now about 5 pounds over weight and am trying this method for a while i went from starving myself to having binge nights cause i was just so hungry. I find now that im trying this im not gaining or loosing plus im not getting really dizzy after my workout sessions. I think iv platoed im a size 10 i was having troble excepting i dont think il be a size 1 ever again i think because thats were my metabolism is. But after watching this it made me think im healthy now im very active im more stable i always have energy and im not almost fainting when im really active. So thats something to be happy about and thankful for. I have to keep telling myself that :). I love your videos and am learning lots from watching them. :)

    I struggled with an eating disorder for over 20 years. Long story short, after countless outpatient therapy, several inpatient stays for months at a time, I didn’t find true recovery until I was at a center where I started inpatient and they taught Intuitive Eating. I turn 40 this month, and I still have some ED and body image thoughts and maybe I always will, but when I tap into intuitive eating I feel ok.

    What helped ME to intuitive eat (lost weight but that’s a secondary thing):
    1.- Eat Whole Foods
    2.- Chew slowly
    3.- Take at least 15-20 min to eat
    4 .- Ask your body if it’s hungry-satisfied
    5.- for me it’s satisfied/full/very full, I always try for satisfied.
    I crave cookies, ice cream and candy and I indulge, after a meal and usually with a small serving in good.
    Most important thing: love yourself and listen to your body. It’s designed to tell us what we need. Trust your body

    Here's why I want to do intuitive eating even if my mind tries to trick me that I'm hungry when I know I'm not. I've been off and on keto and now low carb and I'm always tired no matter if I add in more fats and or proteins always tired but once I eat more carbs it helps me feel so much better and happier. I suffer with depression and anixety and when I used to restrict food all the time it made it worse. I'm day 3 on intuitive eating and I'm doing better!!

    Starting to love other people's bodies is also a really good way to lead into liking and loving your own body. Once you realise the diversity you enjoy in the world at large, the easier it is to understand and care for and love your own body.

    @2:48 but sometimes your body is telling you “you need more carbs” Bc you have been eating unhealthy and been eating on carbs .. carbs make you want carbs. I understand this intuitive style. But js. You can have control with WAT your body is telling you as well .. since you essentially are the master

    Hey now, strong legs are a GOOD thing! I actually like the idea of mental love letters. I’m not fighting an eating disorder, but have had my share of negative thoughts about myself, and even as a runner (“You’re so slow!” “You needed a walk break AGAIN?” “You don’t train hard enough...”). Those “love letters” can be a mental game changer, even if it’s just the thought of “I love that this run is done and I made it through. Thank you body for allowing this. Now, let’s shower and recover! Love you!”
