  • Watch the classic DVD for free! Your next tattoo should automatically be better if you apply the timeless techniques taught by black & gray tattoo portrait master Franco Vescovi.
Here are answers to questions we've gotten...
IS THIS REALLY THE ENTIRE "MASTERING TATTOO PORTRAITS"? 🤯
That’s right! All 3 hours uncut.
THE DVD SELLS FOR $100. WHY DID FRANCO MAKE IT AVAILABLE HERE FOR FREE?
Many artists are now out of work, stuck at home, and miss tattooing. Franco heard many were watching his classic DVD to pass time, so he decided to make it available for all artists. 🙏
WHY IS FRANCO NOT USING BISHOP MACHINES?
It was filmed in 2007, one year before Bishop Rotary was born. Today, Franco would use the Shader WAND for the entire tutorial (including all lining). Learn more about the Shader WAND here: bishoptattoosu...
    IS IT WORTH WATCHING TODAY?
Absolutely! The theory, techniques, and tricks are still as relevant as ever.
WHY DID FRANCO CHOOSE THE ALFRED HITCHCOCK PHOTO FOR HIS PORTRAIT?
“One of the reasons why I chose to do this portrait is it’s got so much to learn from. It’s got glass, wood, hands, buttons, wrinkles, different shapes and textures - this portrait has it all to learn from. You can apply all the knowledge that you learn today to any tattoo. Your next sacred heart or next skull or anything should automatically be better if you apply these techniques.” - Franco Vescovi
Here’s the Alfred Hitchcock photo: bishoptattoosu...
If you have any questions, let us know in the comments below and we'll answer! 😊

This video shaped the start of my career and gave me a solid foundation to develop my skill in fine detail black and gray realism tattooing back in 2009-2010. This was THEE only professional tutorial walk through step by step out there at that time, that I knew about just graduating high school barely getting into a shop.
I was fortunate enough to have been access to this DVD at the very first shop I apprenticed 2009-2010. As an apprentice I; moped the shop every night, cleaned wiped the jewelry glass shelving case, washed artist’s steel tubes, ultrasonic, autoclaves the tubes, learned each artists break down and set up to do each artists set up so I could get tips to survive too. Always straighten and kept artists book/portfolio nice and neat at front desk because at that time I think either instagram was not around or was so new I didn’t have it or know about it. So walk ins was how the shop got clients I thought mainly. I earned the respect and ability to watch and study this DVD in the shop. I watched this video a shit load of times bro. 😅 this was gold to me! 🙏🏽
Sparked my attention to end up specializing in black and gray realism now. I Can’t explain how grateful I am for this video, you deciding to develop shoot and produce this art. Your break down and explanation so detailed and well lay’d out (as a kid for me thinking back than I was 19-20) it was easy for me to take in and apply quickly. You were so far ahead of your time I thought i didn’t know that skill level was capable and I would agree still holds up and is gold 13 years later still going! 🙌🏽 I continuously go back a few times a year and watch this video to freshen up some solid knowledge. 🗝
Thank you Franco Vescovi for sharing your knowledge, skill, technique and thought process way back than. I was confused as all hell back than about tattooing and this video helped a great deal at my beginnings. 🙏🏽🙏🏽💯 It was a huge inspiration to get me started being a tattoo artist. If you ever have a moment check out my work, where I’ve come with your techniques as my start up,

Well I'm so surprised to find this online for free, this DVD literally changed my game back in the day- and also got me over not wanting to try a rotary machine- picked one up after I seen this and havent set it down since- I still have my springers and use them but there's nothing like rotary for nice relaxed long pieces. Much love. A thousand blessings- probably the 8th time I've seen this DVD and still I picked up something new you can too.

I remember it was on youtube, at some point, years ago... in different parts, and the suddently it was removed. Obviously because copyrights, which is some we dont think about, when its youtube...
But the time it was there... I learned so much from this video, im even more exited now that you put it out youself...
Alot of my portrait theory comes from this video, and bob tyrell's "mastering the portrait" that i got one year for christmas...
Thank you Franco, you are a big man! And a great inspireration...
To anybody who comes over this video, there is more to a portrait then just tattooing it, and Franco will tell what he knows about it in this video...
I've done a portrait of Alfred my self, using alot of the information in this video, it's another portrait, and i still did one of the greatest mistakes in portrait tattoing. I put the stencil on while the arm was on the armrest... It was a good friend of mine, and i wanted to try it out.
Nevertheless the portrait came out great.... Comment you mail to this comment if you want a picture of it...
There is allways so much to learn, and i'll bet that Franco still get's headegdes from doing portrait up to this date...
    Thanks Franco

Fantastic work and incredible advice. One point that you made that i agree with 1000% is that your reference is everything and keeping your eye on it is nothing to be slept on. A book that I've read that emphasizes this same concept is "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain". I've recently entered the tattoo world but I've been drawing portraits most my life. 27yrs young.

Thanx bud....im 24 yrs in the game been in 5 magazines when it was all shiny and new and wanted that fame.and then. seriously flat out , stopped reading mags...going to conventions, never even watched a single reality show.. ( for real, if im lying im dying) in fact the last convention i even went too was in Philadelphia like....12 yrs ago.. I have no idea who's the coolest or best...now I don't even talk to my own peers anymore... but I did have the privilege too hang with mr Tyrel at that convention...super nice dude...I find the arrogance factor of the modern artist off putting. But I did learn a lot from this and even think I may watch more..so thanx for being a muse my man!

I really enjoyed this man. Thank you for making it available. you're very well spoken and patient in the way you address things. Thank you for that. You are a good representative of how more artists should be. I've JUST started doing only highly recognizable characters. I've been tattooed by Sarah Miller 5 times and a couple other incredible realism / portrait artists. Both black & grey and color. I most definitely wanna specialize in portraits. Of ALL the art I do in so many mediums as well as tattooing, realism in my thing. I hope I get as good as some of my idols one day. Not only for the money but the love of it and the personal challenge. I live & breath tattooing. 5 yrs in...but not full time 5 years....only 2 yrs full time.

Thanks again and keep up the amazing work. I also went to the website to invest in a couple rotary machines and every single one is sold out. Any idea when they will be available again?

Here are answers to questions we've gotten...
IS THIS REALLY THE ENTIRE "MASTERING TATTOO PORTRAITS"? 🤯(Click "Read More")
That’s right!
Learn more about the Shader WAND here: bit.ly/shader-wand-info

It's easy, only for those that have payed the price of over 10,000+ hrs of drawing of somekind in their life. As for color, you have to have your 10,000+ hrs in painting to understand color theory and optical color vs mixed color etc. This is an eye opening video and very inspiring.

Question brother ! If I were to get only one which one would be the better option the packer or the shader? I would like to focus on mainly black and grey , which is the better overall for lining and shading ?? Thanks!
