How to Tattoo Black & Grey Portraits With Jay Butler | Tattoo Tutorial

- We visited Jay Butler at Bloodlines Gallery to learn all about how he creates such incredible black and grey realism tattoos!
Jay was working on the beginning of a full leg sleeve, starting with a portrait of Travis Fimmel as Ragnar Lothbrok in the TV series Vikings. We were particularly fascinated by the insane level of detail in hair and skin - Ragnar’s beard looks soft enough to stroke! - and the way he captures lighting on faces.
Check out the video to see how Jay utilises his equipment to make these amazingly realistic effects.

Thanks for watching! 😊
Amazing work
Top video
In my opinion.... i only use a few dots of white... there is a lot of white... putting white in the hair.. took away fron the white in the eyes..and lip..... im sorry if yall dont agree.. this guy is a dope artist
This, the less white the better it looks, makes the white more powerful when it's only in the right places. Shiny and wet areas.
Hai sir.. Im from india your video very helpfull ❤
Hey, glad you enjoyed it! 😊
Is the 3rs standard or bugpin?
Should've done the stencil standing, right side looks great. Can't say the same bout the left.
Why do you cover the tattoo with film? And how long will it take for the tattoo to be heal?
"WHO WANT'S TO BE KING?!"
Not enough negative space either, or even lighter tines throughout.
Shit hot work.
Didn’t fancy wrapping the bottom quarter of the bed?
Does anyone knows where he's from in UK? I've seen people from there speaking but his accent is by far the most difficult I've ever heard
Hey, Jay is from Liverpool!
Flux with 3.5mm? I think your flux have 4mm stroke.
Couple years away from retirement
HAIL KING RAGNAR!!!

In the words of the judges on Ink Master, this thing is jacked. It looks nothing like him. By the time it’s done healing it’s going to be a big black blob.
You even said yourself that your tattoo is only as good as your stencil, and your stencil was at most 10 squiggly lines you tried to turn into a portrait.
You watch ink master... goes to show you don't know what your talking about mate.
@@___bluff___I agree with them actually. His first mistake was having them laying down for the stencil process instead of having them stand while he marked off where the stencil was going. The left side of the tattoo is JACKED
@@wblckaine1125 My thoughts exactly, looks like a broken left cheek bone and saggy. Not asymmetrical.

I was wondering when I would see somebody say this. not hating, but the stencil was terrible, the face is not proportional. the reference photo was very muddy and dark. the shading was very rough, not much smoothness from one tone to the next. I may not be the best tattoo artist out there as I've only been tattooing for 3 years. but this was poorly planned, and poorly executed.
To be honest, too much line and excessive white user. Contrast isn’t good 😅
Yes a little more light grey needed
……
im sorry this is not how portraits are done !!!
definitely not!
It is literally looks so unrealistic
I need to get my eyes checked cuzzzzz I just watched fella do a portrait
I’m sorry but that’s not how commenting is done.
Too much line for a portrait
More comic book style than realism.
I mean they said portrait not hyper realism def a difference, they def did a portrait
Do it better then
Sometimes no liner in a portrait looks too washy. It's smart to use it when necessary
Doesn’t look like him
Shut up Pete
Thats awful, theres nothing about that, that looks like the intended person. I hope he didnt pay for that tattoo. A real portrait wouldve took 4-5 hours on the beard alone.
Da gebe ich dir recht !!!
Gesicht sieht voll komisch aus voll Schreck irgendwie wie dass der über 😂Fresse bekommen hat!
