The end brick detail was great! Making the faux brick column tricks you into thinking it was original and structural. Great call!

That was my thought too…maybe since it’s “brick” it’ll look like it was structural and serving an important purpose haha. Thanks so much for watching!

We have a bigger "column" that separates the bedrooms from our living room and contains a closet as well. I have thought that it would look nice to make it a feature with brick paneling, etc. but wasn't sure how to handle the seamed edges - thank you for taking the time to show how you did it! It looks great!

The corners aren’t perfect, but simply filling them in and smoothing them out with drywall mud really helped it blend in and look more finished. The great thing is that since real bricks aren’t “perfect”, your fake seams don’t have to be 😉

You’ve done it again Shara!! I really appreciate how you took the extra effort to make the bricks match on each side, so it looks just about as realistic as possible. I’m not sure that I have a location in my house where this would work, but as soon as I show it to my wife/interior decorator, I’ll quickly “discover the perfect place” for it!! 😠 😊

Shara, I don't see any grass growing under your feet! You took this project a couple of steps further than I would of with the addition of drywall mud for added character. The final result really surprised me and looks incredible. I think the trim at the bottom fits and compliments the pillar but I agree with you the top is off a bit. It feels a bit clunky like it is an inch too big or something. I wonder how long the top trim will be there before you change it. I'm sure many more new home projects to come. Thanks for Sharing!

I’ve actually been trying to convince Danny to do a wood stove with a vent pipe up the column and build out the other two sides so it’s hollow for the pipe. If we do that, I’d do real brick tile…but that may be a next winter project. I’ll leave it alone until we decide 😉 but it probably won’t be too long haha

If the word feature is synonymous with eye-sore, then most of my woodworking projects could be considered "features". Okay, putting the mud on the brick was a great opportunity to slap that stuff on with your hand. My cat used to bit me also. Somewhere along the way I heard that she did that as a sign of affection. It’s there because it is obviously a load bearing column. If you removed it the depth of a beam to cover that span would be at least 12” and would affect hvac ducts running in the ceiling. Your ceiling height would drop at least a foot of that was done.

    • @WoodshopDiaries

@@WoodshopDiaries You did make a point to say that you checked to see if it was load bearing, but that it turned out not to be. Isn’t it impressive how people can sit at their computers and know more about your house than you do?

@@WoodshopDiaries I didn’t realize you were a structural engineer like me. So sorry. But, you do have three small wing walls, 2 in the dining room and one in your kitchen that line up where the column is, so there is probably more you don’t realize unless you look at those areas as well. But you probably just looked above the column and saw that part wasn’t structural so thought it was safe. That’s why you should always check with an engineer, there would be at least five areas I would look before verifying that it wasn’t structural.

    • @WoodshopDiaries
