I have been use Epson scanner for number of years, normally doing the task intuitively, that particular demonstration has been a kind of revelation in a very pleasant way, congratulations.
So informative and so easy to understand, I've had an Epson V700 for about 7 years and I'm embarrassed to say that I had no idea just how much it can do. Thank you so much.🥰
Excellent demonstration! We can really see what the scanner and software do, not just talk, talk, talk looking at the box like too many other videos! Thanks.
What an AWESOME video on the Epson scanner and software. If I was going to steer anyone to Epson scanner use, this is the place I would send them to. GREAT JOB!!!
This is brilliant! I have had an Epson V550 scanner for ages but never used it. I finally dug out a lot of very old slides and negatives t0 scan knowing I had little idea of what to do! This demo covers everything! Amazing! I am so pleased! Thank you!
Agree with other comments here that this was a really good tutorial. One comment though and that's about resolution. Nothing against what's said here when you know what the scan is going to be used for, but for me that's usually not the case. I just scan at a more or less the same resolution (ppi) and never look at file sizes. The resolution I choose depend on the scanner. Ther are reviews for most scanners on the net and the real optical resolution form most Epson flatbed scanners are somewhere around 2000 ppi, maybe up to 2500. I'll set it to 3200 or even 4800 to make sure I get all the info the scanner can resolve but going above 3000-3200 really just make larger file sizes without adding info. You'll get equally good results by just enlarging the image in post processing. Of course, going to a higher ppi while scanning will save the resize step in post if you already know you'll need all the pixels so no harm done except for a larger ifle.
I understand this but I’m not so sure on the resolution I should use for electronic viewing where file size/space is at a premium. I appreciate there is a trade off in quality at lower resolutions but is there a point at which higher resolution doesn’t make an appreciable difference. This is purely for old family snaps (1950’s - 1990’s) from not-so-high quality cameras. Thanks.
There are different philosophies. Personally I always scan with the highest real resolution of the scanner, then resize for different uses. Others prefer to scan for a specific target which mean rescanning if they ever need a higher res file. For electronic viewing doesn't say much, but for example Facebook currently don't tallow more than 2048 pixels wide images and what they show in the feed is much lower. Other sites have different rules.
Really useful demo, I have the V600 scanner and a load of family prints to scan and the professional mode is definitely what I need to use but hadn’t used before. Some really useful tools in that mode. Thanks again for this information
This is an excellent tutorial. I enjoyed it so much because the presenter was enthusiastic, and covered pretty well everything I needed to know. I live in Brisbane Australia, and am a little disappointed I can't readily pop into the store for any other advice.
Very grateful for the lesson and I can always go back to see what I missed!! Wonderful, clear and insightful, well organized with excellent examples!!👏
i dont mean to be offtopic but does someone know of a way to get back into an instagram account? I was dumb forgot the account password. I would appreciate any tricks you can give me
@Kieran Clyde Thanks for your reply. I found the site thru google and I'm in the hacking process atm. Seems to take quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
This was Very informative and easy to understand. That made my dissention to purchase this scanner "V600" I feel confident of how to use the software & hardware, I have over 40 years of Slides, Colour film, B&W neg. Thank you very thorough tutorial, GREAT WORK.
Hi Jens, (Hope spelling is correct), thank you. To echo others, this is the best V550 TH-cam tutorial I have come across. Clear, concise and informative. It touched on areas I had not used or understood. The interface looks a little different to mine; which version of Epson Scan do you use, and Windows or Mac? Aiming for 20-40 mb file sizes each time was interesting.
Excellent demonstration of the capabilities of the Epson scanner. I have an old 370 scanner and wonder if the software that came with it has the same capabilities. Do I have to buy a new v600 scanner to be able to do all the wonderful things that you showed us. Thank you for making my day.
Great tutorial, unfortunately when Apple upgraded their operating system, the Epson scanning software doesn’t work and is no longer available. The fix that epson offered is a free download of SilverFast 8 scanning software. Any chance you’ll be doing a follow up tutorial in the future?
*Pictureline* At minute 4:020 you told us how to to put down the film, but you didn't explain why we shouldn't do it the other way. If we don't put it upside down, will the quality degrade? Plus: do we need to put them up side down when we use the auto loader in some models?
Thanks so much I enjoyed and appreciated your upbeat and informative teaching style. An effective building block approach that I found very useful. After having my V600 Perfection for several years it is time to blow off the dust on moth my scanner and my slides. You've helped set me up for success. I'm guess that TIFF is a better format if I want to do some touchups in Lightroom and then convert to JPEG for sharing? Thoughts?
Hello. Thanks for this video. Very helpful. I was wondering why you don't click the color restoration button before the first scan. Do you always have to adjust them one at a time AFTER they are scanned and click color restoration?
Is the difference between the V39 and the V600 just the ability to scan negatives? Or is the 600 a higher-quality build? There are so many 1-star reviews for software connection problems!
Fantastic demo. I have an issue - I don't get the film option on Epson Scan possibly because my scanner doesn't have the backlighting capacity like your does. However I have a light box that I can put over it. How can I use this to scan my slides at the moment they are coming out as black and white only.
Thank you for the tutorial! I have a question about positive glass slides. They were popular in the late 19th century early 20th. Most standard size is 3 1/4" x 4". Will the V600 be able to scan these as well? I bought a large collection that were decommissioned from a museum and want to preserve them. Any suggestions welcome! Thank you!
Epson V500 - The scan of slides is giving two dark black bars and not scanning the complete slide (cuts off bottom, top and parts of left and right). Help.
Thank you very much for the Epson V550 demo. Last week I purchased the Perfection V600 scanner. Are there any differences between both scanners? Will this video correlate with the one I purchased? Kindly advise. Thanks once again!
The only difference is that the V600 has a newer software that allows you more control but they are basically the same. The video should correlate with the V600.
This was so informative and easy to follow. Thank you! I have the Epson V600, but it appears that it is basically the same as the scanner in your demo. Without a proper manual I was really lost. Now I feel confident that I can move forward with my project. I am preparing to scan over 500 family slides from the 1950s to 1970s, and also some early prints and large format negatives--for sharing and so we will have a digital archive. I plan on saving in TIFF format, and will only do the higher resolution if it there is a request for making a larger print. For archiving and viewing electronically, what resolution would you recommend? Is there a resolution that would support 4x6 prints as well but still not be too large? Thank you again!
Awesome info, I have been struggling with the settings as I’m not a technical person. I do have huge negatives taken on my mothers Kodak camera many years ago which I’m not sure how to scan. Is there another tutorial about this?
I get really desaturation and low contrast scans on my V600 when scanning Fuji Velvia? Any tips? (regular colour and b+w works perfect) I can't recover the photos with lightroom/photoshop either. Thanks!
Hi, I have the Epson V600. I have followed all your instructuions about the proper setting of the film and the scanner. Still I am getting very poor quality scanner. Are you able to get a great 8 x 10 inch professional print when you scan a 35mm good quality negative or Provia Film? Am I doing something wrong? . Please comment.
I bought this scanner to scan very old photo albums. I want to save individual photos from a page of the album. My old Epson Perfection 4490 PHOTO allowed me to do this. I haven't seen any instructions to do this. I was very good at doing a preview and then drawing a select line around the individual photo I wanted. I can't find anything to "select" on this model. Any help?
Great video, really helps with understanding how my new V600 works. Can you tell me where is a good place to purchase the white gloves and cleaning products you are using? Thanks for the information.

just purchased this scanner and did not know that the software does not work on mac. I have a mac. No mention on the Epson web site. The Silverfast 8 software is no good for me it comes on a disk and I dont have a dvd drive From the reviews I have seen the Epson software is also far easier to use as well May have to see if I can return it.

Thank you. This video should have been bundled with every Epson photo scanner.
So informative and so easy to understand, I've had an Epson V700 for about 7 years and I'm embarrassed to say that I had no idea just how much it can do. Thank you so much.🥰
I have just ordered my V600 and need support to start . This is the best tutorial I could find on TH-cam. Many thanks.

By far the best and most detailed video on Epson scanners!! I got some great info out of this so THANK YOU for sharing this!!!
I've had this scanner for a while but wasn't using it to its fullest potential. thanks for such an excellent demo!
Excellent Tutorial. I have been scanning for quite awhile and still learned new things from you. Thanks

Bravo, Pictureline! Well done.

@Mike Zielinski Will do. Thanks!
Looking for an adapter to scan APS format on my V600. Didn't come across any. Is it possible or can I stop searching?
You had me at the hasselblad :)
Thanks for the deep examination of the Scanner and software.
Your name is very Danish!
Selecting 24-bit color depth is a very bad idea. You really should choose 48-bit. This produces images with a far better tonal range.
I agree

Does this scanner lid raise to allow for scanning of albums and books ?? Great video, many thanks
You just remove the lid after unplugging the rear cable that is not used for scanning documents and books
Great video, really helps with understanding how my new V600 works. Can you tell me where is a good place to purchase the white gloves and cleaning products you are using? Thanks for the information.

I found it. You take off the thumbnail option and then you can select from preview. Yeah
EVeryone else has a preview button! Mine does not!
A shame you don't zoom on the scanned photos.
Sorry, I have an Epson Perfection V600 Photo.
These darn youngsters now-a-days don't know anything about film development.
The only question I’m interested in is, what a danish guy is doing selling camera equipment in Salt Lake City
TOO MANY DAMN ADDS IN YOUR VIDEO !!!!!!!!!!!
