absolutely love your family! i got introduced to fpu at church and your dad has literally changed not only my mindset but my and my 8yr olds life! thank you from Mission Valley Methodist Church! God bless you all!
Your Dad is a genius. Full respect to you taking on his work as he hands over responsibility. You are a great leader in your own right and I hope you appeal to a whole new audience that needs to learn the system.
I use mini dividers in my wallet to separate my cash! =) I dump my coins into the main coin compartment and then dump them into a big jar at the end of every two weeks or so and when the jar fills up....we turn the coins into cash at the bank and use it for a fun family activity!
I use an envelope system. One for food, one for entertainment and one for petrol. You may have noticed that I said petrol, not gas. That's because I'm in the UK. Great video Rachel.
Try using the YNAB (You Need A Budget) program. It's like a virtual envelope system. You just have to be disciplined enough to use your debit card and not over spend.
Thanks for the amazing energy you share to encourage our journey! My husband and I do not share in the all out passion for money management and so I am borrowing your encouragement to do this rather single handedly.
We do the envelop system. When I take money for food, (either dine out or groceries) I fold the bills before I put them in the wallet. That helps me keep the money separated.
Build a spreadsheet(or use columnar pages) take your checking account and divide it into several sub accounts where you allocate money same as envelopes. So easy, been doing it for 30 years.
Love this. Have been trying to use the envelope system but I find it very cumbersome and I'm afraid if I don't streamline it I will not stick with it, this seems like the perfect way to do that!
Great video as always Rachel!!!! Appreciate you sharing your tips & advise, as well as the inspiration, motivation, and support you give us all!!! :) My hubby and I recently paid off our last debt, $17,000 in 20 months on a low income (we're a one income family). Gazelle intensity, self disipline, communication, support, and saying NO alot was very worth it... We can now say "We're Debt Free!!!! (except mortgage). Feels amazing. Onto baby step #3 we go :) Without the zero based budget and advise like yours, we couldntn't have done it. Before we started watching your amazing dads channel and yours, we knew nothing about budgetting or even where to begin!!! Fast forward two years later and we are now debt free!!!! :) Big thank you to you and your father!! Sorry got carried away there!!! :/ I just wanted to share our victory story :) Anyways, i liked and shared this video on facebook.
We, men, generally don't actually use such big wallets. Maybe because we feel they don't fit in our pockets. 1/ What would you recommend this for men? 2/ Do you use that clip system with money for the week or the entire month or perhaps daily? Some video creation food here ;-) Thank you so much for your contribution!
this actually sounds so effective. taking money from a fixed sum of money which is in a pile you can actually touch vs. just paying with a card that seems like an enormous sum after you got paid is an image that clicked right away! the only downside i see is if you lose your wallet you lose all your money for the month. and i tend to lose my wallets more often than i would care to admit..
My wife and I have been doing envelopes for most things except groceries and fuel. It's weird at first, but totally worth it a few months later when you need tires or something equally annoying.
Love-love this idea! But what happens when you buy something and get a lot of change back (coins)? How do you keep track of what category those should be a part of? Thanks! :)
in Canada we have $1.00 and $2.00 coins so I treat those as "bills" - otherwise my nickels, dimes & quarters go in a piggy bank - I saved enough (am single / on fixed income) to give my niece a corsage for her grad - best thing was I didn't miss the coins and its a purchase I wouldn't otherwise be able to make - my piggy is filling up again for my nephew's grad: new tie 😊
I was strictly an envelope person, using the ones from my local bank whenever I withdrew cash because I withdraw very specific amounts for each category as I know what's spent for some things down to the penny. But I've moved more to the mini clip system as well myself. Love the video!
Awesome system. I'm proud that you mentioned your handgun carry permit. As a concealed carry instructor in Arkansas, I think this should be a mainstream thing and not marginalized or taboo. Carry on!
Questions: -where do you put the change left? -how can men develop their own envelope system if their wallet is smaller than ours? Assuming they do not want to use the envelopes.
i have to ask because i am confused... ANY ONE can answer if you know ... BUT isn't the clip system (or alternative to envelopes) dangerous, as in you'd be carrying around hundreds of dollars in cash at any given time? I might be misunderstanding this one. THANKS!!
+Jessica Grizoffi The cash envelope system is mostly for the categories in which you'd like to better control your spending - groceries, clothes, blow money, restaurants, etc. You can minimize risk by filling your envelopes every time you get paid (ex.if you get paid biweekly, fill your envelope only with the money you need for the next two weeks). My husband and I each have an official dave ramsey envelope wallet, so he is responsible for certain categories, and I'm responsible for others. I only take my wallet out of the house if I know I'm going to spend from one of my categories, and even then, I usually leave my wallet hidden in the car (or sometimes I just leave the wallet at home) and only take the amount of cash I know I'm going to spend (ex. we budget $200 for groceries every two weeks, but we only take $80 into our main grocery store at a time. Or, we budget $60 for restaurants for the month, but we only take $20 with us). Cash is actually a bit safer than credit cards - if it's stolen, it's the only thing gone! With cards, you have to manually call each company, alert them of possible fraud, get the cards canceled, and order new ones. Meanwhile, if you have bills that are supposed to auto-pay with those credit cards, the charges won't go through, you'll be past due on the bills and you have the extra hassle of calling all of THOSE companies and giving a new form of payment. When you're carrying cash, you're aware of it and tend to be more careful in where you place it (I actually don't like the feeling of carrying my cash in my purse, it actually makes me nervous!). Just don't advertise that you carry lots of cash, and no one will even notice :)
+Jessica Grizoffi I actually keep a set of 'master' envelopes at home that has our budgeted cash for the month and then my wife and I have envelopes that we can carry with us. We move money from the master envelopes to our personal ones as needed but only put a week or less of cash in them. There are actually very few times that we have large amounts of cash on us. If we do a large shopping trip for groceries then we may have a few hundred. If someone happens to rob you when you have that cash in your pocket just throw the cash in the opposite direction from where you want to go. I guarantee you that the criminal will run to the cash and you run the other way. It actually pays to carry around a large bundle of singles in your pocket. You throw that real hard and dollar bills will be flying through the sky and you may actually get to walk away with your wallet or pocket book while they are chasing after a bunch of dollar bills!
In 15 years w/ the envelope system and counseling hundreds of others I've only ever heard of 1 person who lost a few hundred dollars when their purse was stolen. But you can break it down week.
I hate having cash. Money is tight, as a single parent, I would rather lose my debit card than my money. A card can be replaced. I only ever carry tiny amounts of cash for car parks.
I used a medium sized binder-clip as a money-clip for years. Then a friend of mine got embarrassed when I paid a lunch tab and pulled out my cash in a binder-clip. He decided it was 'ghetto'...so he bought me a nice money clip as a gag-gift. Joke's on him...I like it. As a lady, of some considerable style, you might try different colored clips. Or, as my niece just suggested, try fingernail polish on them. She also suggested bedazzling them, but she's 14...
How does anyone anywhere (unless they're off grid) get away with $145 for utilities?? My garbage & sewer bill alone is $60 (set flat rate) plus water, gas, electric, phone (cell only), and cable/Internet. That adds up pretty quick. The only real flexibility I have is in the phone and cable/Internet. I can lower those but the water, gas and electric are nearly impossible to lower. I am working hard to lower my electric as it is extremely high for a small two bedroom house (less than 800 sq ft) and I live alone. Last summer my power bill slipped past the $400 mark. I have managed to lower it this year by about 30% and am still working on getting it even lower. It's still really high with my most recent bill being $268.79. Considering my income is only $1,735 per month, the percentage for utilities is eating my lunch! I guess it's a good thing I own my home!
Love this!!! Thanks for all your vlogs. Been following your dads principles since January, and never felt more free!!! Shared on Facebook...maybe I'll win😃
Hello. Seems I am 8 years late to the party. Quick question. What to do with all the coins that belong to various categories? Do all the coins live together and are used across the categories or is there a way to organize coins too.
Great idea! Gonna implement this as we tend to over spend in the eating out category & guess what?! I'm due for a new billfold! I've carried the same one for 5 years & have been looking to replace it! Lol I liked & now gonna share on FB!
I am new to this channel. She talks about your monthly cash what do you do if you get paid weekly? Do I divide my monthly budget by 4 and then take that in cash?
I keep a running, dated list of things that are on my need and want list. I print it and carry it with me in my purse so I can always see the priorities.
Any tips for a man using the envelope system? I'm a woman with a big purse and don't mind a big wallet. My husband is having trouble keeping everything organized in his pocket sized wallet.
Rachel, What do you do with your change from purchases. Do you just put change from all categories in the change pocket or do you keep it separate somehow.
The envelope system didn't really work for me. The only cash I carry is for fast food. Every month I withdraw my budgeted amount for fast food and when that cash is gone, I know that that's it. I do have a debit card that I use for my purchases and every time I spend money, I get a notification that tells me how much money I just spent and how much money I have left in my account. It keeps me from overspending because I know that it's real money and I am constantly aware of how much money I have in my account.
Love love these new videos! Liked and Tweeted. This could be super useful as my husband and I are paying our snowballl and currently all about that budget.
I would be nervous carrying that much cash around. Especially since I'm very forgetful. But I like the idea... how do you know how much to put in each category?
hi, Rachel. i like clip idea! i have same concept except i have a dividers for few category but i have VERY hard time not to borrow money from other category so i stopped getting cash and i use debit card. some people say its easier to swipe and not knowing how much you are spending but i find it i don't go shopping w/o cash unless its planed like grocery shop.when i have $5, or $20, its east for me to take my kids out to ice-cream ,etc even though its not in the budget. do you have any tip for me? i do most of my bills online too, thats another thing. do i only get cash maybe for grocery shop?i wonder if i make different checking acct for different things so i separate our emergency money ( that need to stay in the bank too so we don't touch it!) from other expense. What about a wallet or system for men to carry around? My wife has a wallet like yours but I don't want really carry around something that big.. Any suggestions for male budgeters 😊
When my daughter started college, I suggested she use colored paper clips to keep her gas and food money separate. I like your binder clips, too!
colored paper clips is a great idea!
Way better idea

"Yeah uncle benjy" She is so hilariously awesome. I love her channel.
Man the ramsey family is so genuine love them so much
I haven’t done the clip system in a long time but I am excited to start again. Gives me boundaries and I love that.
I use an envelope system. One for food, one for entertainment and one for petrol. You may have noticed that I said petrol, not gas. That's because I'm in the UK. Great video Rachel.
Honestly as a Canadian the envelope system gets frustrating because of $1 and $2 coins. Large coins bulk up a wallet really fast!
agreed!
Try using the YNAB (You Need A Budget) program. It's like a virtual envelope system. You just have to be disciplined enough to use your debit card and not over spend.
Hall's Emporium ditto! As an Australian having $1 and $2 coins can get annoying.
I agree.
Just leave the coins in a envelope and mail it to me. Problem solved 😁
Sticking to cash on our groceries makes such a huge difference!
I love this!! I've always wanted to use the envelope system, but I love my wallets too much to get rid of them. This is a great way to have both!
Thanks for the amazing energy you share to encourage our journey! My husband and I do not share in the all out passion for money management and so I am borrowing your encouragement to do this rather single handedly.
I kind of love that you have a carry permit. ;) don't mess with you and your clips. :) just discovered your channel and I love it!

Congrats on the success Reynelle! I'm almost done with Baby Step 2. Already paid of $20,000 and it feels great! How is life going for you all now?
Glad to hear you have a Concealed Carry License. Be Careful and be aware of your surrounding.

Rubber bands. I get wide bands so I can write their use on them the band.
fold them in half ;)

bay32b I save the coin for the dollar menu
Hand gun permit....LOVE IT!!
I have one also but in my humble opinion us law abiding citizens should never be required to have a permit to carry , what are your thoughts ?
I was strictly an envelope person, using the ones from my local bank whenever I withdrew cash because I withdraw very specific amounts for each category as I know what's spent for some things down to the penny. But I've moved more to the mini clip system as well myself. Love the video!
So cool that you take responsibility for your personal safety like that!
Awesome system. I'm proud that you mentioned your handgun carry permit. As a concealed carry instructor in Arkansas, I think this should be a mainstream thing and not marginalized or taboo. Carry on!
I love that you have a concealed carry permit

carry just today's money with you or just this weeks money

I hate having cash. Money is tight, as a single parent, I would rather lose my debit card than my money. A card can be replaced. I only ever carry tiny amounts of cash for car parks.
Now I want to run out and buy a good wallet for the clip system.... Am I missing the point? :)
yes, use clip system with your wallet that you have now
I actually like this better
you're the best ever
This is great! And here I was about to purchase an "envelope system" wallet the size of a brick. This is much simpler.
I just started using the clip system two weeks ago and love it!
"Uncle Benji" !! Bwahaha! Love it.
That's great! I guess I pretty much use the clip system. I just use colored paper clips. Great minds think alike! Thanks Rachel! ❤️😉
I love Dave Ramsey videos

Like the idea of clips better than finding envelopes
This is awesome. It is sooooooo much better than carrying envelopes!! Thanks Rachel!
shared on twitter as well!!
I love that it's simplified!!
I love this idea! Why didn't I think of this? Using this idea for sure!
Great idea! Gonna implement this as we tend to over spend in the eating out category & guess what?! I'm due for a new billfold! I've carried the same one for 5 years & have been looking to replace it! Lol I liked & now gonna share on FB!
Love Panera! I enjoyed this video. Thank you so much for sharing your clip system.
I don't have Facebook or Twitter so I just liked the video on here.
Liked and shared! Putting this system in place today...love!
I am new to this channel. She talks about your monthly cash what do you do if you get paid weekly? Do I divide my monthly budget by 4 and then take that in cash?
Heather Fabris yes. Get your cash for the week each time you are paid. This is not a bad thing. You'll be carrying around less cash.
I keep a running, dated list of things that are on my need and want list. I print it and carry it with me in my purse so I can always see the priorities.
Love the wallet. Need how I can fix the zipper? Is not closing good. I use it open. Was a gift from my mother.
I just love you! From one carrier to another keep up the great motivation to the body of Christ.
Wow , I would love to be your friend. You have a great personality and very smart . We need more people like you in this world 🌎
I thought that 100 dollar bill was going to rip
Uncle Ben is tougher than that.
Thomas Elam ahhaha
love this. I have the bank envelopes I carry around to separate thing but I might have to try the clips!
Any tips for a man using the envelope system? I'm a woman with a big purse and don't mind a big wallet. My husband is having trouble keeping everything organized in his pocket sized wallet.
Paperclips in different colors could work
Thanks again , I like your ideas and will start using it , it makes sense ...
& what do u do with the receipts? Do u add it to the clip pile & log it? Or toss it? Or don't log it?
Rachel, What do you do with your change from purchases. Do you just put change from all categories in the change pocket or do you keep it separate somehow.
I was wondering this also. I love the idea that SnipsandSnails mentioned above!
+Shelly Robinson we throw all our change into a glass jug. Last time I filled and cashed it in I had almost $300!!!
Why doesn't anyone come out with an debit card envelope system? Some have multiple checking accounts but it seems not many banks would support this.
this is so clean! I have to replace my envelopes bc they get all ratty over time.
I use the envelope system that we got with FPU!
I love your clip system!
Woohoo love the clip system!!! Cute wallet too!!!
Love love these new videos! Liked and Tweeted. This could be super useful as my husband and I are paying our snowballl and currently all about that budget.
How do you deal with change that is left over from your bills...i want to try this but have a problem with change afterwards
I would be nervous carrying that much cash around. Especially since I'm very forgetful. But I like the idea... how do you know how much to put in each category?
I just found you, where can I get the system?
Thank you for sharing!
I love the clip idea, i shared and liked.
hi, Rachel. i like clip idea! i have same concept except i have a dividers for few category but i have VERY hard time not to borrow money from other category so i stopped getting cash and i use debit card. some people say its easier to swipe and not knowing how much you are spending but i find it i don't go shopping w/o cash unless its planed like grocery shop.when i have $5, or $20, its east for me to take my kids out to ice-cream ,etc even though its not in the budget. do you have any tip for me? i do most of my bills online too, thats another thing. do i only get cash maybe for grocery shop?i wonder if i make different checking acct for different things so i separate our emergency money ( that need to stay in the bank too so we don't touch it!) from other expense. TIA
How do you budget on a self-employed income where every month the income is different?
Handgun Carry permit, nice work!!
Love the idea of clips! Liked and shared via Facebook
Love your channel! 💗
I LOVE YOU RACHEL....SO AWESOME!!! LOVE THE VIDEOS
Never thought of clips... great idea👍👍👍
Simple yet great idea. Thanks ;)
haha i do this too. envelopes were too hard lol
hahaha "yeah uncle benjy" XD hahaha
Liked and Tweeted......love the clip idea. Can't use the envelopes in my small wallet!
this is a great idea. I liked and shared on fb
🙋🏽♀️ I could use a clip or envelope system, my wallet now is too small. I never carry a purse.
I love the envelope one better . Maybe bcus I'm in a really tight budget to pay off debts and I don't carry everything in my wallet at the same time
Love the clip idea, smart!
Liked and tweeted.
Love it!..and love the wallet which one is it?.. looks like a Tory Burch
what a neat idea!!
Liked, tweeted, and shared on facebook!
Awesome 👏 👏👏
Great video thanks for sharing!!!!!
what do you do with the coins that are left over
most people don't manage them while spending money. they dump them at home in a big jar.
after you have a lot of coins, change them in a bank for cash.
I just have my coins with me all the time and use them as I pay for something as cash money. I don't count them, and don't manage them. I only count cash paper money.
Leighla Claiborne Coins are peasant money. We don't carry them. Haha. Jk. On a serious note, wouldn't a small container work?
Really great idea but I don't have a car and do my grocery shopping online so I need to use a debit card... I do find that I spend less this way anyhow😀 I'm in the UK by the way...
Luv envelope system
Rachel do think is wise to have the executive Costco membership
What about a wallet or system for men to carry around? My wife has a wallet like yours but I don't want really carry around something that big.. Any suggestions for male budgeters 😊
Live this idea
Liked and shared on Facebook, thanks for the video
