      @@emperorconstantinexipalaio4121 Mostly because it was a city taken by assault, which almost always turned into a massacre, no matter who attacked. The defenders had also expelled all the Christians, so only infidels remained, and they chose what in the hindsight was rather unwise form of psychological warfare. "Wooden crosses were regularly dragged up on to the city walls to be desecrated through spitting and even urination in full sight of the enraged crusaders." -Asbridge, The Crusades.

    • @emperorconstantinexipalaio4121
      @emperorconstantinexipalaio4121 5 ปีที่แล้ว +266

      theonlylauri What I’m saying is I think it is generally called extremely brutal by medieval standards because Christians did it and our society wants to make Christianity seem as vile as possible. In reality, it was most likely just as bad as any other brutal medieval siege.

    • @theonlylauri
      @theonlylauri 5 ปีที่แล้ว +64

      @@emperorconstantinexipalaio4121 Yeah, that may be why its brutality is talked up these days, but I think even the original sources mention it was quite bloody. That said, it's true there were plenty of other brutal sacks, so Jerusalem was just worse than usual, not some unique atrocity.

    I think the timeline, "2 years after departing" is significant. Within 2 years of hardship and violence, as I think we see in many historical situations, an army is capable of much unpredictable atrocity and savagery. A soldier after 2 years of campaign has seen and endured things that make him a different man than a raw recruit

      I agree with most you say, a lot of Muslim countries (Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Pakistan) take in a lot of refugees. Its kind of embarrasing compared to rich Australia who have an shitty treatment for refugees. But what do you have to say for Saudi Arabia ? They are far from secular yet they dont take any of the Muslim refugees and have an afwul status for woman. Same for all the Golfstates. They take zero. Also Indonesia (Muslim country with biggest population) refuses to take any Rohingya. Bangladesh did a lot more for them. In the end assholes are everywere in every culture. Its most important we criticize them and dont turn a blind eye. Rich wolfs will always let the sheep fight amongst each other about who has the purest wool.

    It's amazing that a single siege tower is able to allow an army to breach a wall and get down to open the gates. One would think it's easy to defend against such a siege-ing device when you have a nice wall, fire and oil attacks and bowmen to repulse the attackers. The skill and courage of the the soldiers who fought to get over and down the wall, must have been something else. Don't mean to be macarbe, or glorify the crusaders, but i'd love to have seen what sort of dogged, determination and bravery it took to continually fight over day and night upward thru a siege tower and then breaching the top of the defended wall. What gave them the edge? armour? weapons? few warriors of unparalleled skill? better teamwork? or was it just sheer numbers? How did they accomplish what feels like should have been impossible.

      This characterization only emerged after the Crusades, and stands contrary to level-headed analysis of the battle itself (where only 4-5k civilians were killed in a city of 40-50k, and maybe 10k soldiers died). See Johnathan Riley-Smith's work on the Crusades, for instance.
