What makes it even sadder for Yukko is that if you lose your wallet in Japan, the likelihood you will find it back with all the money in it is really high, so she's really unlucky here.
I've lost my phone twice in Japan (once on a bus in the countryside, once in a huge shopping center in Akihabara) and got it back both times. I heard a similar story from a friend losing his wallet and getting it back with everything in it :)

You realize that Japan has just as much crime as anywhere else, yes? What are you going to do with a phone that is tagged with a number that's linked to a phone plan with someone elses name on it that also has a serial number and can be tracked? It's worthless to pawn or sell, especially if it's an iPhone with iCloud lock on it.
Taking money is ideal because it cannot be traced. You better believe that you'd get robbed in Japan just as easy as you would get robbed in Eastern Europe.

Too true! Lost my wallet when riding my bike a year back, while it was thankfully returned to me by a postal worker the 90$ in cash I had was stolen, my debit card and credit card and all my important stuff were thankfully still there. The cash was the only thing taken.
I lost my wallet sometime last year but thankfully the girl who found it also went to the same college. She saw my relatives name on a paper in the wallet and messaged her to find me. I was pretty much making the same face as Yuuko when I was looking for it tho.
My folks told a story to me where they were in a car behind a motorcycle, and someone on the motorcycle dropped their wallet. Instead of signaling in some way, they pretended to not notice, turned around at the next light, and then went back and got it. A little later, the motorcyclist came back frantically searching for it. He asked my folks if they saw the wallet and they lied and said no, then stole the money. They tried to justify it by saying they turned in the wallet somewhere with the credit cards inside.... I was the only one not laughing. I feel bad for the guy.

***** I see. In my opinion though, the series (the manga) get better after the anime ends. That's where the real battle begins and the plot really starts to develop.
That happened to me once. I had just turned ten and I had gotten a whole bunch of birthday money, about 50 dollars (which is more than I had ever even seen in my whole life at that time). I decided I wanted to get new clothing at the mall, you know cool stuff that wasn't hand-me-down. I accidentally left my little purse under a bench in a changing room. A staff member eventually found it in the same place I had left it, that is however after someone else had found it. Someone found my little purse, gone through it, and took the birthday money from my wallet... It's been many years since then and it still makes me feel dead inside.
People like that are just sick in the head.

I remember temporarily losing my wallet at a restaurant. Had to tell my parents that day that I didn't know where my wallet was and we had to drive back to the restaurant. Thought my parents were going to kill me. Luckily, a nice waitress found it and had kept it up front near the cash register to make sure no one would come by and get it. She handed it over to me and sure enough everything was in it. My ID, money, etc. Thank God for that nice waitress cause holy shit. I thought my parents were going to skin me alive if anything bad had happened.

To me it's not just disappointment but also, "If I felt something right now it'd be unyielding rage and sadness, so I feel nothing at all."
This is top notch humor, I whole-heartedly love the entire team that worked on this anime.

sucks, doesn't it? i lost mine some good 10 years ago with a couple hundred bucks in it in front of the bank. i don't remember how, but i found out who had it and went to their house to pick it up.
They said that it was empty when they found it. i offered a $50 bounty for "returning my wallet" and the look on their faces told me the whole story. they had fucking stolen my money, and were now feeling hella guilty for stealing it (because i showed up in a shitty run-down work pickup truck and beat up clothes that i use for work on the farm on purpose), and couldn't even bring themselves to accept my bounty with a straight face, they nervously sorta-kinda-refused (you know). i forced it on them anyways (my documents and credit cards were all there, so that's a cheap price to pay compared to the hassle it would have otherwise been), took what was mine and went on my way. They were poor, i'm not, but i sure hope that little incident still haunts their conscience. Being poor is no excuse for being dishonest.

Depending on the country you live in 40$ is a lot of money for a student not doing any part-time. It takes most of us a long time and effort to save that much, I would be really upset too if I lost that much money so I can understand Yuuko's pain.
