Just so you know - At 3:11 Vanessa indicates that the seam allowance is 1/2”. My Juki F600 doesn’t have a1/2” mark - just 1/4” and 5/8”. So, I measured from the needle down position and marked the 1/2’ point at the machine with painter’s tape. Then, I selected the stretch stitch. My mistake was not realizing that once I choose the stretch stitch, my needle moves to the left. That made my seam allowance larger than 1/2”. I notice that when I was working on the neckband on Video #7. The sleeve cuff came out smaller, but it doesn’t matter to me because the width of the cuffs turned out to have a better match to my liking with the neckband. I took sewing in high school - eons ago - and successfully participated in a high school fashion show. Through the years I have made clothes for myself, my children and my husband - including the Hawaiian shirt fad many year ago. So, I have a little experience in sewing garments. I must say, that Vanessa has been clarifying so much for me. I was really flying by the seat of my pants. Looking forward to more garment sewing, Vanessa. Please, keep it up.
Your “beginner tips” are fantastic. I’ve been sewing for 50+ years but don’t think about why I do what I do. Your tips (flip the fabric) are great reminders. Thank you. Can’t wait to make this pattern!
Vanessa , thanks for all your hard work on all the videos. I am a beginner and am learning A LOT from you. I am hoping to be able to sew something for my daughter and me one of these days. We are both very tall (6' and 6'.2") and am always looking for stores that carry tall garments.
You are so fun to watch and are a great teacher. I am learning a ton. I purchased my fabric from your shop, double brushed poly, but was wondering what type of cotton blend would work? I am sensitive to manmade fibers. One of the great things about your videos is that I am also learning about the different types of fabric! I have never heard of double brushed or in your last video, challis. So happy to have found you!
Just a note to thank you for including closed captions. It is VERY helpful!!! I love your videos. Even though I've sewed for years, it's nice to be reminded of the small details that sometimes have gone lax after years. You do a great job, are concise, and joyful. Thank you.
i dont mean to be so off topic but does anybody know of a tool to get back into an instagram account..? I was dumb forgot the account password. I would appreciate any help you can offer me!
@Zain Lucian I really appreciate your reply. I found the site thru google and I'm trying it out atm. Takes a while so I will get back to you later with my results.
I am having problem with my thread fraying. I changed to guterman thread, but it still frays at the part where the thread goes through the needle hole. Before the hole.
Beautiful tutorial as always. Thank you for sharing your expertise. When sewing with knit fabrics, what throat plate do you use? I have a problem with the needle pushing the fabric into the needle whole and making a mess. Sometimes I will start the seam a little further down, but that leaves a huge gab between the end of the fabric and the beginning of the seam. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again.
I'm an experienced sewer. I love dolman etc and I thought I would try a rayon or other drapey fabric for this patterns. Is there something I'm not seeing for troubles with not using a knit?
I think in this pattern there is no ease in the bust at all, so a woven fabric may be quite tight in the bust area. It's recommended that you use 50% stretch for this pattern (if I remember correctly). You may need to add ease and check the size to compensate. Another option would be to cut the woven fabric on the bias to get a little bit of stretch.
Yup! What Stacey said. Since it's designed for stretch knits with at least 50% stretch in both directions you'll need to make some samples and play around if you plan to change it to a woven fabric. There is not even ease built in to make it in the same size you would normally make it in if you use a woven. Good luck!
If you don’t have a stretch or lightning stitch you’ll need some doubles up scrap knit fabric and I would start with a 2.0 width and 2.0 length zig zag. Then adjust one at a time if that one doesn’t work for you. If it restricts the stretch too much then lengthen it, etc.

Gosh you're a great Teacher!
Thanks!

A cotton/lycra would work. I would stick to the blends that have at least 5% spandex for your first top. Hope that helps!

Hi Vanessa, Can you do this with French Seams? Thanks😊
Can I ask what stitch to use for the stay stitching at neck. Many thanks
As mentioned in the video it’s just a line of straight stitches.
Sorry i must have missed that in the video
Great video as usual Vanessa! Just ordered a clapper but still haven’t found the fabric for me🤔
A cotton/lycra blend would work also if you want a more natural fiber. :)
Good job 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

stacey of course...forgot about that ease thing 😜 will check and great idea about the bias
My neck line came out more of a V shape. What did I do wrong?
I'm using a basic machine.. what zig zag stitch.. width and length.. would you suggest? Maybe I missed it on the video.. thanks

Thanks... Now to figure out what stitch to hem.
What kind of hem did you put in the top.
That's covered in the next video.
