Look for Vance Avenue Oroville Wildlife area, Bathrooms, Biggs, CA - google gives you wrong directions tho - just go on Vance Ave - you cannot fish the holes they are fishing from shore. you can just get close.

Anyone who really wants to see salmon running up river would NOT be fishing upriver using treble hooks trying to catch the few salmon that are attempting to run up river to spawn. I am NOT a tree hugger. I simply do not understand why anyone is allowed to attempt to catch these magnificent fish using barbed treble hooks near their spawning grounds especially in a season when salmon counts are extremely low. I understand that people need to make a living doing what they have done for decades but it is time to re evaluate this practice in my opinion. A few decades ago I hired a guide and caught in this same "hole". The fish were almost completely depleted of the fat they have when in the ocean and were basically tasteless. Why catch a tasteless fish that is critical to reproduction of the species and keep it? I know my comment will not be popular. I am OK with that. Fire away and explain why it is OK to target salmon near their spawning ground when the returns are very poor.
Firstly, there are many factors that play into the flavor of the fish. Many fish you catch in the river have bright orange meat and taste Better than any salmon you can buy in a grocery store. Sometimes you will catch some that look to be dark, but have orange meat.
That said, I believe they should have a report card, similar to sturgeon. You really should only be able to keep 10 or so a year per person. One person really couldn't eat that much salmon in a year anyways. Some guys go out there every single day and keep their two fish which is just ridiculous. I agree with you on that level but as far as using barbless hooks that wouldn't really make a difference anyways salmon are extremely tough and even when you hook them in the mouth with trouble hooks nine times out of 10 you can release them healthy it is not a big deal unless of course you really feel bad about them feeling the pain which I don't understand because there going to die anyways. I would be willin to bet his clients that day caught their only salmon for the season. You can't make a big deal of that
Edward Dergosits simple. These are hatchery fish. They are paid for by license money to specifically be caught by people. Numbers of salmon are dictated by the amount released from hatchery and not wild reproduction. True native wild salmon were wiped out long ago by low flows and dams, the wild fish seen these days are just the progeny of hatchery fish, basically feral.
Thanks for the reply and explanation. I know most wild fish are in very low numbers. There are still gravel beds upstream from the hatcheries where wild salmon do spawn however. Hope the heavy rains and snowfall we are having give this years returning fish a break.

If you look at the video at 22:02 across the river there an arrow looking spot you want to fish right where the people are. Use spinners and cast up river. My favorite is a blue fox size 6 with salmon feast smelly jelly.
You will know if you are in the right spot if you hear a drunk and high dude yelling Okuma
