Stop painting important details. Paint interesting details.

You often find details in the important pieces of a painting. And they make you think you must paint all of them. But I believe that when you don't, and you concentrate on the more interesting pieces, you will be surprised how unimportant those "important" details turn out to be.
In this video you see me working on a commissioned watercolor for an English client who is leaving Holland after 5 years. She asked me to paint her Dutch adress as a memory.

Beautiful watching how the street emerges from the paper through the various transparent layers of paint. As you work through to the darkest values the lightest still shine through and the scene glows with life.

Sometimes your brushtrokes appear so loose and careless, I wonder how on earth they will make a good painting, and then without me even realising the scene suddenly appears and all those brushstrokes make perfect sense and I cannot imagine the painting without them.
