I wish young musicians today would be exposed to this kind of music more often. These were the greatest musicians of all time, no electronic enhancement, pure musicianship. I am 72 years old and was introduced to these sounds at an early age. I can listen to this 24-7-365.
Corky Cantera You are absolutely correct. Music was so pure which is why we reach back to things that we were brought up on, like this. My mother in law loved this.
I am 76 and listend to this fantastic piece of music since I was 16. It must be the best Stardust of all time. Oh my God.
So can I. I play flute and sax. I use to go to sleep listening to this recording back on my teens,,,,,I too know 'every note'.....
My mother turned me on to this years ago. She passed 7 months ago but I thank her for the gift of music.

Anyone listening to this in 2020 (lockdown?)
As a little girl growing up my father used to often play this and other great jazz stuff (Benny Goodman/Django etc, etc) and I'd be rolling my eyes because it wasn't Led Zeppelin or Rush. How I wish he were still around today so I could listen to it with him and I could let him know how much of a great influence he had on my music listening habits today without even knowing it. An awesome performance.

My Dad played this recording at Christmas time every year. As a trained musician, I remember every note. He told me how the drummer had to rim shot to snap Lionel Hampton out of his solo trance. I love you and miss you Daddy. Today is my 69th birthday !!! 💕😃👍

One of the greatest melodies ever formed - it is transcendental. Each version, instrumental or vocal, has it's own merit, simply because of the amazing composition.
You are so right. Elsewhere I've described Stardust as the Beethoven's Ninth of the American songbook and this version, along with Gordon Jenkins's arrangement for Nat King Cole are the supreme interpretations of it.

It was in Germany in 1965; Augsburg Germany, by accident in the early
afternoon one Sunday, that we picked this up just before it began on the
Armed Forces Radio Station. It was about three of us. We "understood"
who we were hearing - But we didn't expect what we got...........It's
been the "Anthem" of my jazz listening days. You guys (and gals) we all
should meet up in a stadium, just because of something like this - We
are in a special world as we listen. Blessings!
One of my all time favorites..... My father, who was born in 1919, put me on when I was 3.... Such memories....beautiful genius music.

I have about 45-50 different versions of Stardust in my collection and this is by far my favorite instrumental version. One of the greatest jazz recordings ever, every soloist is amazing, including what must be the greatest vibraphone solo ever. I love the thing Slam Stewart does with the humming/ bass playing. Major Holley did the same thing a decade or so later, and Barney Kessel's solo is just so crisp and clear, shame he isn't better remembered today.

That album was played in my home when I was a kid and loved it. I still have the original that my Mom purchased and it is priceless. Mr. Hampton and his All Stars were geniuses!!

I remember this album with fond memories of my daddy playing it on Saturday mornings, and I loved listening to it. I was only about 13 or 14 years old at the time, definitely into rock and roll and R&B, but somehow I knew I was listening to pure, master musicianship which would mesmerize true jazz lovers and aficionados until the end of time. Even now, it brings chills to my body and tears to my eyes.

「スウィング」というジャズ喫茶でこのレコード聴いてぶっ飛んだ思い出あります。
スウィングジャズの大御所達のソロの後、横綱ハンプトンの露払いのようなバーニー・ケッセル
の短いソロがとてもブルージーでカッコイイです。

When I was younger man I was only interested in the music of my own time. As I get older I realize that other generations made stuff that is truly 'classic ,' that they made something that the passage of time does not diminish , and in some cases enhances its worthiness. This is such a piece. Great art is great art.
You get it. I was 21 in '71, into the Stones, Cream, Zepplin and then I discovered Hank Williams. There's no expiration date on music. If you haven't, check out Louie Jordan, big influence on Chuck Berry, James Brown and many others.
I had the honour to see him live in Wiesbaden back in 1985 and I even managed to get to talk to him backstage. What memories!

My fav Hamp track.What virtuosity. Willie Smith love the Alto horn tone and phrasing just as much as Johnnie Hodges. If only he was recorded more.If only Mr Armstrong was recorded with Mr Beiderbecke.My Dad said they did jam together but it wasn't recorded in the late twenties in St Louis.

This is an all time great standard. Lionel is a legend. His music was in an area where the big jazz bands were appreciated.
I had the opportunity of knowing Lionel Hampton when I was a young singer. He heard me sing. Several months later he
left a message.for me to contact him to join his band. I was honored he wanted me to sing in his band, however I could not because soon after that I married.

Me too, sista! My Papa was an Italian, White, American, New Yorker, born in 1919! I learned about social and racial injustice from him! He is the one that put me on to all the greats! Billie, Dinah, Lionel, Earl Garner... So many more legendary iconic trailblazers!
Superb ! Definitely my favorite jazz track of all time. This probably was the first piece of music I would have heard as a new born. My dad played his mono and stereo versions all the time. Dad, brother and I would listen to this track well into the night again and again and again :-). I still do so and use this track to introduce folks to Jazz. Very often I see jaws drop. This is definitely a one off where every musician was in his element. 15.22 minutes of heaven on earth !
Hampton makes just an incredible entrance ... and the rest is simply fabulous ...

SP盤の時代にこの録音はすごいですね。
放送録音は既にテープで撮られていたんでしょうね。
ソロイストの多くは知らないプレイヤーですが、皆腕利きのようで聴き応えがあります。
敬遠しがちなこの時代の他の録音も機材が良ければこのくらい楽しめるものが多いのかもしれませんね。
SP盤を知っている人は現在僅かだろうね。大きくて黒い78RPMレコードだね。

Extraordinario registro. Mi tía Inés (oreja privilegiada de mi familia, en la que había una parva de orejas privilegiadas) me recomendó esta versión hace (quizás) cincuenta y pico de años y tenía toda la razón. El solo de Hampton es un milagro de esos que nos suele dar el jazz.
Vaya desde aquí mi ferviente homenaje a mi tía Inés.
By the way, la cita que hace LH de Pretty Baby al comienzo de su solo es sin duda un gesto hacia Charlie Christian, que cada vez que tocaba Stardust recordaba ese fragmento.

In my opinion, Stardust is the greatest pop song ever written, and of the 40+ versions I have, this is by far the greatest instrumental one, with Jon Hendrix's "vocalese" take on the classic Louis Armstrong version a close second as my favorite vocal version.
This is still my favorite version. I also have the original 10" LP. I don't recall the date but it was probably 1950.
