My first Holden was a manual VL. I definitely did not treat it with the respect it deserved 😂 Great memories. Thank you.

I was 12 years old in 1986 when the VL Commodore was first released. My Dad was a GMH employee at the time and as part of a program to showcase the car to the public he was able to bring one, exactly like this, home for one evening with the task of driving it around as much as possible. It was a silver base model manual and we drove it all over Melbourne. Compared to our regular car which was an Eh holden we thought we were travelling in a limousine. What a good time we had and great memories! They certainly were a great car.

The Datsun motor went into the VL due to Holden not having an unleaded petrol motor available at the time.
They were a great car, I had two company VLs, the second, an 87, I bought as a family car afterwards. The best Holden I'd ever owned at the time by a country mile, and I've owned heaps over the years. Then it got stolen and wrecked. I've owned a lot of Commodores since then, my VE SSV, and Calais Vs better than the VL, took a lot of years to get there. I still have the SSV and now a VF Calais V, put simply, they kept the best 'til last.

They were every young man's dream in the day. I always wanted one growing up in the 80s (got my Ps in 1990). Never owned one in the end (had a VH) but still like the look of them. Certainly a high point in Commodore styling after the plasticity VK and the love or hate VN. And they had that Nissan 3l!

Love VLs too but something about them that is special for me is when I was a kid and we were living in Singapore we could see them on the road often enough however unlike the Australian market ones they were mostly 2.0L (RB20). They were the last Holden to be sold in Singapore that I think would really be considered a success there.

Early commodores have this effect on most of us! A time warp indeed, but these cars were all smooth, comfy family cruisers. And the skyline next to the VL was not even in the same league as the commodore!

I had one back in 90s in white but it didn't come with a tachometer had to listen by ear to change gears

The engine really made the VL... can you imagine if it had the shaky, fuming 202 in there? It would be a different car.

They were planning on putting the 3.8L in it but didn’t get engineering done in time!
