I just had to do a similar job on a door with a stained glass window. The stained glass had a couple of broken panes that needed to be replaced. Removing the trim with the glass in place is difficult. You have good info here and on your channel.

Worse yet, is if I've paid someone to do something and then have to fix their work. Agh. If you can get those nail heads to pop up and pull out the nails you have won the battle.

I have exactly the same door, and while none of the panes are broken they are quite old and scratched up, with paint in the corners, etc. What do you think of the idea of completely removing all the muntins / individual little panes, and putting in one large sheet of glass into the opening? Assuming I find suitable moulding (all new of course) I would expect the process is to be quite similar as you describe, no? thanks
I haven't tried it. I recall seeing doors with just one large pane of glass. I wonder if you would need to use thicker glass because it is a large pane? Maybe the larger pane if not thick enough will be prone to breaking? As a side note of interest, early glass making did not have the technology to make large panes of glass, that's why old homes had windows with a lot of small panes of glass. restorationwindowglass.com/glass-history
Most states have outlawed glass window panes in doors. Even the little panes. Out of curiosity, why would you do that to your door? Don't you like the little panes? Anyway, when you go for the glass, do not mention it is for a door. If they ask, say they are for picture frames or just buy the plexiglass.
Around the 5 minute mark, I have all four sides of the moulding butted together and fit into the window's frame. I am gently knocking the moulding into the frame.

I just held all four pieces together, those four pieces fit into the hole in the door. Then I used the rubber mallet to tap the four pieces fully into the frame. If you can't get the four pieces to fit, then maybe a slight sanding on the four pieces will get them to fit.
Wow I needed exactly that. Do you think it is possible to remove the mouldings without taking out the glass? I need to take out some of the original glass pannels.

I used an infrared paint remover. I bought it to remove the paint from the beams around my front porch. It was kind of expensive, I think I paid $500 for it. I thought I'd resell it on ebay, but after using it decided to keep it. I have a 1952 home that has a lot of lead paint. After using it on large flat surfaces, I thought I'd give a door a whirl. It was time consuming, but the end result was wonderful. I used a triangular scraper and a Hyde scraper that came with several different blade shapes. I used an Olfa utility knife.... I really like this knife. Link to it below. I used what is often called a painter's tool... there a many varieties - you can get one at any hardware store. The wedge blade on it works like a charm to pry the molding away from the door. The tool I used to remove the nails belonged to my dad (carpenter), it's likely at least 60 years old. Do a search for "nail puller" or maybe "nail pliers". Be patient removing the molding. Hi! it looked like you took each piece of the frame off separately, but then when you reinstalled it, the frame was put back together in a square. Do you need to do that before putting it back in? Thank you!
I'm not totally clear on your question. I think you are asking how I re-installed the four pieces of molding. The four pieces were a very tight fit. I had to fit them together as a unit (square) and then tap them into place as shown in the video. You might be able to install 3 pieces and then tap the last one into place. It's a good thing mine were so difficult, anyone else having the same problem will know how to solve get all four pieces into place. If you take your time and are careful you can get the molding out without breaking it. The key is to pop the nails up and pull them out. Make sure you are working on the side of the door with the nails. The glued side will likely be a bear to take apart.
I couldn't find matching molding in stock at any local lumber co or hardware store. I found replacement molding at a local company that does custom millwork. If you don't have a miter saw, the millwork company might cut the pieces for you.

I have a different problem : i want to remove a dirty glass panel by a wood one so my door which has 3 panels , 2 in wood and one in glass at the top for the bathroom..it's ugly and peopel coming in the entrance don't have to see th ebathroom door ..and i don't want to change all the doors as they're all similar except for that one and that design could be really pretty except for that glass panel ..i don't know if i shoudl try to glue some wood panel but the glass is not a regular surface so the end result mightbe poor or break it and replace by a thin wood panel but i don't know how to do ..any idea how to do this: it would help tremendously :-)

I could spend hours back and forth with you. I can't even understand your written explanation of what you wish to accomplish. You might try consulting with someone that does cabinetry work or a master carpenter.

I didn't think it was how to identify which side had the nails in the first place. But my door is still painted. Will the magnet still work through paint?

If you want shatterproof glass you could buy the type of glass used in storm doors.

How do you know which side is glued and which side is nailed in?
I show to use a magnet to find the nailed side.... maybe you missed that part of the video?

If it's a decent magnet it should. I doubt if one of those cheesy refrigerator magnets will work.
