😊 when planting trees: 1. use square spade to make square hole so roots can spread easily and not grow round in circles.
2. Gently tease bottom roots apart a bit to encourage outward growth.
3. Put some water in the hole before putting in tree.
4. A little loose soil around and below tree helps roots to stretch out and take.
5. Talk to them 😂they love the sound of your loving voices😂
Good advice. I hadn't heard that about the square hole but it makes sense. Another tip is to add some good, rich soil, especially toward the top where the feeder roots grow, but intermixed with the native soil so that the roots learn to spread through the native soil and don't just stay in the rich soil (especially important in heavy clay or compacted soil).

Yes....while some of those 'points' are helpful, the (#1 reason) They will Not Thrive is....IF they were Planted .... too DEEP.
It doesn't look like the #1 Orange tree (Newhall) was planted too deep.
You both were able to tell (by the soil level in the black pot) and planted the same level as the ground. ✔
But...the bare root Apple trees > ? Tree #2 and Tree #3. 🍎 I think they need to be raised.
As scary as that seems....it's Not that hard. / plants are tougher than you think / the soil is still loose/ and roots are not established yet.
Pull back some soil / raise the tree / put soil back around it (can you mix in... some compost or better soil? ) / water it in...to settle soil around the roots. > Done.
> Mulch, mulch, mulch. about 4"..... but not touching the trunk of the tree. Do you have any Compost? You can mulch with compost.
#2 Lack of > Water. Most young trees die within the first couple years of planting....from lack of consistent watering.
( But..... You don't need to water twice a day) > Dig a test hole.
Dig down....next to the hole to SEE just how much water there is. How deep is the water going down? / how long before it drains...?
Your Soil / Season / Climate and Temperature will all make a difference. You will get to know.... just how much to water them. Moist Not Wet.
Once they are established.....you won't be watering that much...(once or twice a week?) have a schedule. Water every Monday....or whatever. 🚰
IF you had CLAY soil and were living in England > and watering Twice a day....they may have drowned by now. (roots don't want to 'sit' in water)

You are learning! *Not too bad for your first time! 😀 You even had your soil tested. Wow. When I first started gardening, I didn't test my soil.... for years.
*Don't be afraid to go... raise them up...(5 Min's) the roots are not established yet. (watch a video)

After all your concern and work....I would hate to have the apple trees die, just because they are too deep.

The square hole is a myth but the trees should be planted higher
@vintom7457....great advice! Also, loosen all the roots growing in a circle around the root ball so the roots will spread out and not continue to "girdle" ( grow in circles). I water thoroughly when I've replaced the soil...mixed native and organic...half way up the hole. I let it settle in while planting the next tree. When all is done, I finish filling the holes and put a 'saucer' of soil around the tree...a bit beyond the original hole so water will not drain off when watered. Water again. Love watching you and all the hard work have done and continue to do on your incredible property. I've had major veggie gardens, fruit trees, etc. in VA, USA and had a landscaping business for years, while living in Ft. Myers Bch...yea...that.

Just a small answer Florida oranges are from Portuguese grafted varieties
Don't be shocked if you start getting oranges within a year or so. They can fruit while they are still very young. Citrus' preferred ph is supposed to be 6-7 (slightly acid to neutral), so you should be fine. Citrus are "heavy feeders", meaning they benefit from higher nitrogen levels. (That's not usual for fruiting plants, most of which will over-produce greenery and under-produce fruit if given lots of nitrogen.) If you want to use liquid fertiliser with citrus and can't find any made for it, you can use fertiliser made for evergreens grown for foliage.
Orange blossoms...no sweeter smell on earth! Love orange blossom honey...it is THE best flavor, like no other. Planted more orange trees while in FL than I could count. @@underthetornado

Fill those holes with water to make sure it is moist around the roots. So glad to see you guys take a gardening adventure!
FYI, the lilies you put in your pond are VERY Invasive if not put in large pots with dirt and weigh them down with heavy rocks! Otherwise in a matter of months, there will be NO room for swimming in your.... "Lily Pond"😊❤❤

Thanks that im not the only one that saw that thos lillies are making huge problems in natural places like Badajoz and Merida (Spain) near Portugal, they are very invase and they are almost impossible to take them down, if the seeds enter the river flow will be a natural disaster 😢
It's best not to put non-native plants in your stream. Plant your Lily in a pot and submerse it in a larger pot or trough to make a container water garden. That will allow you to enjoy the beauty of your water lily while while protecting your stream.
@Mrandmrsadventure You may not notice it happen. Lily seeds are in a little membrane that will float downstream, break, and plant the seed.
Nothing like your own pomegranates! We planted 15 pom trees in our Turkish garden and get the best fruit; dark blood red juice that we freeze and drink every day throughout the year!
The new fruit trees will look great in a few years, role of thumb is always water trees well before planting, and soak them after planting, you 'will need to water them regularly for the first few months , but well done
I love your channel ! I am 63 and grew up in a "holler" in Ky. We had 3 gardens and it was so nice to have tomatoes ,cucumbers and green onions on the table at every meal. You are doing a wonderful job and can't wait to see the progress on your beautiful land.
Some tree watering tips:
A. You want the tree to sit a bit above the mote in a little mound, so water goes AWAY from the trunk. Then that mote or depression that can retain water, than another little mound around it (think donut), so that the water stays around and soaks the roots. And yes, mulch on top of it all...
B. No need to water the tree itself, it drinks from the roots, and the leaves and trunk are better off dry. You can't help it when it rains, but when you eater with that fire hose, just aim for the 'dish' or 'donut' around the tree. The soil and roots will do the rest.
These will help you conserve your water and make sure it gets where it needs to go, rather than watering gravel or weeds...

GREEN THUMB TIP: You need to space the lilies apart. They will grow & spread some ... at least 3 or 4 ft. away.
LOVE the new trees.....firsts of many, I'm sure. A suggestion: get some advice on planting trees. I've heard that digging a square hole is better to stop the new roots from following a circle that the potted roots are following..forcing them to go more into new soils. Also, the moat around the trunk should be away from the trunk. The trunk needs to be kept dry while keeping the roots moist. GOOD LUCK!
So cool that you're planting a fruit orchard! I'm 60 and now live in France where so many people also grow a good partion of their fruit and veggies. I grew up in Salt Lake City and we had Peach, apricot, zpple, crab apple, plum, raspberries. And tomatoes, zukes, cukes, squash, sweet peas and green beans. It was awesome and many fond memories.
orange trees grow in full sun in Phoenix Az. And they produce fruit when they are 5-6 yrs old

Many, many years ago as a very young student, we had a school garden. There we children learned how to plant, harvest, remove weeds, etc.
how to plant a tree:
Dig a hole so that the root ball has enough space
fill water into the hole
wait until the water has seeped away
put the plant inside
then some soil
then water again
Finally, fill in the soil and press down lightly
Protect the first 30 - 50cm of the plant with wire or plastic mesh around to protect it from animal damage
One thing to consider when planting multiple trees in a row or in close proximity to each other is that every third or fourth tree should be a nitrogen "fixer" tree like honey or black locust, Persian silk tree, or Goumi berry. Those will replenish the nitrogen in the surrounding soil. A side note is the secondary benefit of the Honey and Black Locust is that they are good for erosion control because of their hardy root structure, so plant some on the hillsides/terraces.
If you are planning trees, it is important to have no grass or other the stem, because the tree needs water and if there are some other plants growing under and around the steam they take over the water 💦 🌳
I have found when transplanting bigger trees, spraying their leaves a few times a day makes a big difference. This helps the tree to absorb water whilst the roots get established to take over that function.
I am SO glad you watched the Back to Eden movie. I watched it a few years ago and it changed my life. People come and visit me and tell me what green fingers I have as everything grows so well, but it is really the result of that movie.

Good to make hole 2x as big (wide and deep)as roots for easy roots growth . You could carefully use pick to loosen soil around planting. Keep trunk base at its original ground level. Bigger loosened soil base allows water to soak outside drip line of its branching.
I totally agree that the base should only be buried up to the original ground level. Burying the trunks too deep can kill the plants.
The mantra is "plant them high, they won't die". You don't want them too high but ground level.

We helped plant trees at our local park for Earth day. One thing that they stressed was not to put the mulch to close to the base of the tree (don't let it touch) because the mulch holds the water in, it will rot the stem or base of the tree. They had us use the mulch to make a ring around the the tree to sort of make a little well. That way the trunk could dry out and yet the the moisture could be locked in for the roots. Hope you find it helpful. Those trees are doing great now!

Congratulations friends🎉🍊🍏🎉🎉🎉❤. Next time I would suggest to fill the hole full with water before planting, then wait a moment until the water has been absorbed a little bit and then put the tree and soil into the hole. ❤ Afterwards you water it normally.
My mother said to fill hole with water before you replace dirt to be sure the soil is well hydrated. You might try to get a slow drip going over roots at moisture can slowly hydrate. Perhaps a plastic jug with a few small holes to allow slow release of water. Good luck… so exciting to plant your first trees. 😊❤
Our apple orchard is in full hot sun here in N. California. You might want to check on that. I do keep my citrus where they get shade in the afternoon.
Northern California is a lot like Portugali n many ways. I grew up in the Portuguese part of the Bay Area. No longer there. Everybody had mint and orange trees, and a few cats and chickens in the back yard. Hydrangeas in the front yard, without fail. Chard and even artichokes were brought to us on a regular basis. It was nice. I, myself, am half Portuguese, and only lately have found pride in the peaceful agrarian culture that it is.
So excited for you! If you have deer around they will eat the trees. So you might want to put a fence around them.
They don't need to worry about deers, there are none in the Algarve.

When we moved onto or land we planted a small apple orchard. We have 16 trees, 10 varieties of all purpose apples, from macintosh, to black oxfords to wolf rivers. The trees hax been in the ground for 7 summers, and we get a wonderful harvest eaxh year. Love, water, sunshine and food for your trees, and you will get thwir appreciation as fruit!

We were all rookies once, just keep an eye on them, keep them well watered, make sureyou treaddown the soil around the plant so there areno air pockets and the roots are in contact with the soil. Next time you plant a shrub or tree fill the hole with water first and let it drain then plant and water. Use microryzal fungus sprinkled over the roots as it promotes root growth. Loved this video, and your first beautiful trees! Here's something you might think about. Before taking plants put of their planters, completely saturate them with water. Then when you remove the planter, "finger" the roots to loosen the outer soil and let the bound roots be set free to grow outward! Usually if they have be in the planter for a bit, they want to start growing in circles. Loosening them makes them very happy! Then fill the new hole with water as well just before placing your plant or tree in. It may take a bit longer to replace the soil since it's soggy in there, but keep at it and thump it down a bit with the back of your shovel.
If you wonder if you've watered enough, you can always get a large spoon or trowel and dig down a bit. Sometimes it's shocking how soon the dirt is very dry! A longer slower soak, like natural rain, will help prevent run-off! Anyway, the very best to you, and blessings on your efforts! Thanks again for sharing! I love your videos!

One tip I haven't seen posted here yet is to cut off the extra sucker shoots on the biggest apple tree. Just leave the main trunk.
i use that tip for my ornamental Crepe Myrtle especially after a wet rainy season.

Make sure to keep the fruit trees watered everyday or every other for about 2 to 3 weeks to help the roots to get started.
A nectarine is similar to a 🍑. I believe that you were thinking about clementine, more similar to a 🍊. But don’t worry. Algarve is famous for the oranges. Your tree will be fine (the ideal pH for a orange tree is 6-6,5).

Gardening and food preservation is a learning curve, but well worthwhile and fun too. I started with a flat lawn on the place I bought to homestead 4.5 years ago, and this year I was nearly self-sufficient except for milk, butter, cheese, sugar, flour and coffee. I am rooting for you every step you take on your land
🦋 my mom, canned corn, tomatoes, apples, applesauce, peaches, pears, made strawberry and grape jam and jelly, froze, strawberries and corn. We also raised all of our own beef and pork. And we got raw milk from the bulktank from the farm near us.
In our yard, we had a cherry tree and apple tree, and a pear tree. And we had those things all winter long because she did that.

It settles the tree into its new home. It gives them a comfortable start. And the water is right at the bottom of the root ball.
Top watering is fine after that.. but your ground is so dry .. so very dry..

when you plant trees in the future first fill the hole with water completely let in then seep into the ground then plant this allows the roots a better chance to take hold in the soil. you should then dig a small sand bank around the tree in a circle this will also direct the water more directly on to the roots when watering the tree.
RE: Planting. > Fertilizer for transplanted trees. Compost is best. (Add/Mix about 1/4 to 1/3 of Compost to the soil ) > Also good to Mulch with Compost.
Compost is the best soil amendment you can give your tree, as it improves your soil's fertility (Nutrients) and water-holding capacity over the long term.
(Not sure how much water your soil will hold....especially, in the heat of the summer?)
Spread an inch-thick layer (or so) of compost over the soil and replenish it regularly.....as it breaks down to keep soil nutrients at optimal levels. (not touching the trunk of the tree)
The grass is called Johnson grass in the US, the scientific name is Sorghum halepense. It was introduced from Europe in the 1840s, and is considered a prohibited noxious weed, not good for cattle, hard to kill. I would love to see you all plant some things that are native to that area - I plant lots of natives on my midwestern property, to benefit the environment.
I’m 84 and we always had a vegetable garden but downsized this year. Still I canned tomatoes and made sweet pickle and enjoyed enough of other veggies!
You're doing well with the tree planting, a great start. Next time consider watering the hole really well first, especially as that soil is so dry even at the bottom of the hole, it will take quite a while to for the water to soak right down to the bottom of the roots so keep it watering regularly till the rains come. A spade (square blade) instead of a shovel is best for digging planting holes, more accurate & effective at shaping the size of the hole. Faster too.
The 'weed' with the red stems is Purslane. A great herb to add to salads, very nutritious & the best plant source of omega 3. It handles the dry environment well.
watering the hole very well before putting the fruit trees in the ground is key .. making sure you dig well around the perimeter .. amend the hole soil before you bury it back in with compost or other organic nutrients .. second key is to make sure that you tamp the root systems in well as to not have any air pockets between the roots and the soil so that the roots have auto contact to the soil .. watering should be daily for a while until they settle into their new surroundings .. you should know fairly soon if they have any trauma but they look like overall very healthy stock .. wood arborists chips is the best way to build soil .. glad you are paying attention to the gurus of organic gardening ..Paul is Canadian and knows his stuff ..
Yup - you are so right - I grew up with a great vegetable garden in the backyard, and my daily chores included weeding and harvesting. A wonderful start for any child! Plus, when a recession hit and Dad was unemployed for 2 years, we had some healthy food of our own.

You will be happier with your lillies if you plant in buckets and then submerge them into the pond. Each year, lift the buckets and cut the roots at the bottom.

Yep, that did it for me Drew....I'll never, ever look at a Pomegranate the same lol. And the seed slogan. I must be the only one (?) that spits the seed after getting the juice off of it. I don't like chewing the seed nor swallowing it. That just doesn't sound right but no other way to say it? Enjoy the fruits of your land!
Wherever you planted them, read up on espalier trees it will allow you space around the area. Some of those weeds are edible and make tea as well

A couple of things I've learned, ( suggestion) this comes from OKportugal ( Ken's mom) before planting anything, water down really good, then plant. You would be surprise what a difference it makes!
This tip is from a friend ( with a very green thumb) if you can, when the trees flowered, pick each flower before it turns into fruit. This way the tree puts all its energy into growing strong roots. She did this for a couple of years; and believe me, it paid off. Also, fruit trees need an LOT of water, more than you think, specially the first few years. YES, water them every day!🤗😄

Apple trees need full sun to produce fruit. It is the trunks that need to be protected. Here in California it’s common to use white paint on the trunks.

Composthting. It's important. My grandparents acquainted me with theirs. As a kid I thought putting spoiled vegetables was kinda gross but I waited it out and got to know the benefits!
Only advice Id give you on the planting is if you can dig your holes a little deeper and wider than the root balls and fill the holes with water and let that soak in before filling again and planting the plants.. As you've dug the holes a little deeper, before putting the trees in, back fill the holes with soil you've dug out (its less compacted) and then plant your trees.

When I was a child almost had at least one apple tree in their back yard but ive been looking around and I don't see fruit trees anymore.
Purslane also makes a nutritious salad with a lemon/oil dressing. Love it!

Hi , suggestion for planting best to dig your hole twice the size of the roots allowing the roots plenty of room to establish, fill hole with water before planting or you can just sock the roots in water before planting. Love watching your progress you’re not afraid to get your hands dirty or hard work.

A little tip on planting and transplanting...always step around the stem of the planted plant/tree. The roots don't like air😉
Try to mark the South Side of the plant/tree before transplanting. It gives them a better chance at survival 🌱

I’m sitting here catching up on my videos with u guys and I have to say I can’t wait to see the day u two become parents to two legged people-lol. Watching u nurture the fur babies shows how awesome u two will be. Brittany is so gentle and soft spoken and drew will be the semi stern father-lol. (Sorry Drew but it really is a compliment). Ur children will be truly blessed to have u guys as parents.

Don’t worry, everybody who gardens was a rookie at some point. I have 2 apple, 1 pear and 1 plum in my small garden. I am in my seventies and I still grow my own fruit and veg, there is nothing that beats your own food.

My mama was 18 when the Second World War started, and till the day she died, she hated wasting food. She often didn’t start eating till after we kids were finished, and she ate our leftovers first, before she served herself. She always remembered the Great Depression too………. Oh, I forgot to mention, I grew up in Belgium.

Yes, purslane 🙌 It grows wild here in Southern California as well! You can also put it in sandwiches, and our chickens love it! I use an identification app, and most "weeds" you see around are either edible or have herbal properties. We have a ton of wild mustard also
Next water the holes and make larger ones, the roots need water, not the top. And add 'food'to the roots too. Pls Trees need regular watering for a year.

My advice is to remove the succer from tje big apple tree ...it will let the main tree become more vigoureus .
The succers are the lower branch comming from the roots . 28:20
Make a big whole put all the dry woods 🪵 and branches and leaves 🍃 than bury them and half way cover them with soil and grow beans there and you'll have great soil to grow stuff ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Hi guys! I love the fruit trees look up on TH-cam how to ground them with copper wire it’ll keep bugs away and they will grow to 2 to 3 times faster. Also, do this with any gardens. Sending all my love.
transplanting .. loosen more soil, plant at the same depth as previous, stake for support, cage for protection, wrap trunk at ground level if needed.
🦋 That plant that you pulled up, with the red stem, right after you blew the dandelion seeds all over, looks like a plant that I saw on the TH-cam channel Danu’s Irish Herb Garden. I’ll try to go back and find out what the name of it is but you can use it for so many things it’s edible and also she does a ton of stuff on her channel with dandelions and dandelion greens. Free food.
I’m impressed with all that you guys are doing and I know your learning as you go along! Also, there is a website that people will actually stay for free at your home while you travel while they travel to Portugal. It’s a pet type of sitting gig internationally. I am considering this next year when I visit Portugal, I will pick a family and they pick me hopefully and then I get free accommodation if caring for their pets. Its called trusted house sitters. So eventually you guys can go for a long trip if desired.
