I've owned the SY-1000 since its' release. Boss really did little to market or provide tutorials for the SY-1000. It's a great, powerful device but it will be confusing and daunting for new owners unfamiliar with Roland/Boss guitar synthesizers. As usual, the documentation is minimal, basic and focused on functional explanations without examples where users are left to introspect and disect factory presets to figure out how things work. I recall a very good features / tutorial series on the SY-300 which I also own. What happened to Alex Hutchings? Very little in Boss Tone Central for SY-1000. If sales numbers are below expectations, it's due to Boss' failure to provide education, tutorials and in-depth demos. Great product, failed marketing.
Even the SY-300 is worthwhile piece of gear, imo. Pairs extremely well with keyboard synth, too. The sound engine for the oscillator could be improved but there's a lot that can be done with it. My DAW-less set up would be weak without it.
You can get most "synth" tones with normal pedals. the main thing you need is a good filter. Use octave pedal for square waves and fuzz for saw waves. Use auto swell/volume pedal for pads. Shim reverb and arp pedal for some of the really strange effects.
Unless they have done something to update their proprietary 13 pin cables ($73 for 15 foot, $90 for 30 foot) you will need to budget for frequent replacements. I have two that both failed after about a year of home use. Not just me - you can google and see the same results from others. I really like Roland and Boss equipment (Own: VG-99, GR-55, Katana, Keyboards, Octa-Capture, etc) but this is a sore spot for me. Also - my support experiences with them have been very poor. Tried calling support and never got through to anyone. Ended up emailing them on Sept 10th, 2018 - then two more additional times for them to finally respond on the Sept 24th, 2018. They ended up offering a minimal discount on purchasing another cable.
FWIW - Gittler makes a very good 13 pin cable - bought one several years back and it's still solid as a rock. Only comes in 18ft max as I recall, and that runs $80 or so, but its build quality is way superior to Rolands own cables. (Btw has a 90 degree end, so if you're a "cable thru strap" guy like I am it's brilliant!) I have a couple Roland-ready Strats, and on the factory female jacks the surround is plastic, with the only ground coming from the little locking pin. Way too noisy and unreliable. Over on the V-Guitar forums I came across a guy from Australia who was making limited runs of replacement 13pin females with all metal surrounds so the entire jack acts as ground. Ordered a couple and installed in the Strats - between the Gittler and those jacks it's night and day.
@@bbandthegroove1854 Unfortunately I found out about Gittler cables after already purchasing my second Roland cable. Also - have a Roland Strat and read the same positive things on that replacement jack. I was just a bit discouraged after the second cable failed and gave up on all Roland's 13pin equipment - I may pull that stuff out of the closet at some point and buy the Gittler cable. It is a shame that you need to purchase obscure 3rd party accessories for all this stuff to work.

I completely agree that the cables and maybe the connections are the weak point. I love the sounds you can get from the Roland/Boss guitar synth system and the flexibility the divided pickup gives for how those sounds are applied. However, because of the reliability and cost of the cables, I don't feel like I can gig with it. The cables also feel a bit stiff when moving around the stage, which I find a bit off-putting. It is a real shame, as I like and use a lot of their other equipment.
