Making a woodworking workbench doesn't have to be complicated and expensive. In this build I use nothing but 2x4s (as well as glue and brad nails). There's no complicated joinery and can be made without any clamps. One of the things I struggled with when I got started with woodworking is how to make a workbench without a workbench to work on? This project is so simple it can be done out of the back of your truck or driveway with very few tools. You could get by with only a circular saw and a drill if needed. You ready to Make Something?! It would be cool if you connected the two top slabs with a 2x4 laid on its side. This would put a tool well in it like a traditional jointers bench and if you used pocket screws you wouldn't need clamps at all for the entire project. I don't need a bench but I think I'm going to use this idea as a base for shelves in my garage.

Awesome workbench, something I could really use. I have all the tools to build. My problem is trying to find 2x4's that match the quality of the ones you have. At my Home Depot you have to check out 2000 boards to find 1 that is close to straight.
What grade are the 2x4's you used?

These TH-cam videos are amazing, and inspirational. But it always feels completely unrealistic. Those new Chevy trucks are $74,000. I only go to the hardware store once every 3 months, and I drive a Camry.. It's absolutely exhausting hauling a bunch of boards by yourself. I just use 100% reclaimed wood instead, by grabbing a few boards at a time after work from the construction site dumpsters. Trying to sort through the enormous stack of warped boards at a hardware store is really depressing. It's almost worth buying a billion dollar jointer, just to avoid worrying about the selection process.

I find that taking a 2x10 with pith in the center is best. Jay Bates did a nice video on it. Where it provides the ideal quartersawn grain by cutting out the pith. those 2x10s are usually much more stable than 2x4 from cupping and twisting.

I'm going to add a shelf on drawer slides to access smaller tools and I'll put my larger tools on the bottom shelf. To finish it off I'll add doors to keep the dust out. I just bought an EcoFlow River Max a few months ago to use for camping, vacuuming the car in the apartment parking lot, etc. Dude the thing is so awesome. It can run 100W USB PD through the USB-C plug, _and_ run a 12V socket, _and_ run a couple 2.4A USB-A plugs, _and_ run 600 watts continuously though the AC outlets. It charges at 500W from the 120V outlet, and it can charge at 120W from a car outlet (or 200W from the 'solar' input, which is any 10-25V DC source). It doesn't quite have the beans to power my air compressor (same one you have) but it powers my reasonably-powerful Shop-Vac without issue. When it's not in active use, I'm using it as a UPS for my computer. I just tell it to stop charging at 80% so it doesn't ruin the battery over time.
Also, the wifi features and raver mode RGB LEDs are neat. I have no real use for the raver lights but eeah looks cool. I should be able to find my tent at night that way.

Great simple bench. I love this as a concept of building cool stuff outside with a couple tools as a fully equipped workshop is unattainable for many people. This makes it really achievable. Making garden furniture or house furniture with layering the wood in 3 layers, overlapping joints so you get the strength of a mortice and tenon for example but without the higher skill level or tools required would be great for this kind of outdoor work.

Is there a name for that overlapping joint technique? Is it really mortise/tenon level strength?

It's more like half lap joinery. Don't know if it's as strong as cutting the joints out of a 4x4 but it's probably better than just 1 2x4

Love your video. Quick question. Will this hold 350 lbs? I need a bench for a UV printer with wheels. Thanks

Are brad nails really successful enough for this? I will mount a vice to mine and be beating on it. I know glue holds stronger than nails or screws but as far as pulling the wood together I'm thinking using threaded rod or something.

How come no one uses the clutch adjustment on drills to stop stripping fastener heads and overdriving fasteners?

I love you videos, very down to earth. I am a newbie and wanted to know if it is absolutely necessary to get rid of the store edges on 2x4’s? I don’t have a table saw or planer. Also, when using the brad nails for securing top section together you responded that it might cause problems down the line for dog holes, what could happen when drilling the dog holes? Will the brad nails break the drills? I’m new and just wondering because I also dont have a bunch of clamps and this process seems workable for me.

Dave cool project! Now blow out & off the Ecoflow. Sawdust and electronic boards don’t play well together.

Thanks for a great video. If I wanted to make it a 6 foot top, Could I just increase the cross supports by 24 inches?

I'm a super beginner. How do you ensure that the corners are exactly 90 degrees, so that when its assembled it will be level? Is there like a right angle tool you can put the pieces into before you nail them to ensure they are correctly aligned?

I like the workbench I wish I had something like that but not so big and that's so wide for me to put a can crushing device on there for the apartment life I want that do something different besides using my temper I crashed my can I want to do something fun with my candy crushing but this workbench was in perfect but needs to be just a little bit closer instead of wider for my apartment life cuz I'll find the spot for it if I had something made like this don't have to be that wide it might have to have a shelf on the bottom to put my trash bags down when I need the trash bag to put my cans in but I like this table breakfast I wish I had something like this but smaller but heavy duty where it's not going to tip over or anything like that but for right now it's just an ideal in my head I'm trying to get ideal how to make my own can crushing device everybody else comes up with all these cool ones and I should have thought that before they did but for right now I like your workbench
