How to play the intro to Rhymes and Reasons by John Denver

  • In my new instructional video series, "Off The Record" I teach you how to play guitar parts of great songs as they are played by the artist. In my latest video I teach the intro to Rhymes and Reasons by John Denver on the 12-string guitar. I put in a lot of detail, including how to finger pick in the Travis style as it's the underlying pattern in the intro, the entire song, and the bulk of John's excellent playing.
Please comment, like, subscribe and most of all break out of your guitar playing rut. In the words of John (signed on my book he wrote) "Thanks for listening!"

Hi Gordon, like many others who've commented so far, all my life I've loved this song and everything JD played. I never dreamt I could play anything like this but thanks to you and your fantastic style of breaking down the components of the intro, with some practise I will be and I am so thrilled. I am a subscriber now & look forward to future lessons from you. You're the best, please keep them coming ! (love Bella too)

Thanks David. Your comments mean a lot to me. I do plan on making more video tutorials. I probably learned to play guitar listening to John Denver, Lee Holdridge (orchestral arranger) and his band. Please share with other acoustic guitarists and Denver fans. Stay safe and well! g

Thanks for the comment! This guitar is the Guild F-412. The model John played was F-512. I recently met the guy who designed the 512 and he said it was completely different (and better) than the 412. I believe it! Mine has a beautiful tone but it's like driving a Mack Truck.

@@gLustig60 Thank you! I have a Guild D40 built in RI (original Westerley collection), a HS graduation gift to myself in 1975 (yup, I'm older a slightly wiser). Guild guitars are made to be played as the slogan goes. Yes, they may be overbuilt "trucks" but they sound beautiful. Two things get better with age in my experience - liquor and guitars. Be well and keep up the great vids.

@Gordon Lustig hey Gordon before i start i was born near liverpool uk, this song is one of the all time pivital moments that reminded me of who i should be for the rest of my life, ie what kind of person i should be (The waltons and little house and other stuff also had the same affect on me) I know john died tragically in 1997 and im aware of those facts from memory, but if he was alive today and needed to teach us how to play this, then i know he'd teach us as if we was little children, and thats what some of us need, and i thank you for this, and im 61 years old and know my way around a guitar, but i wouldnt of got this one right without your help..

Agreed. Mike Taylor was his first guitar player. However, Steve Weissberg was an incredible guitar player and added richness and nuance to everything he played on. Check out the "definitive" recordings of Calypso and Annie's Song without the orchestra. It's brilliant! The Elvis band stuff was a bad choice. I stopped listening at that point. @@gLustig60 I am a life long John Denver fan which is what brought me to you. There are so many of his songs and the intros he does that I find simply fascinating. I played for many years with no instruction and only recently picked up my guitar once again. This time it is much different as I am more serious and single minded in my focus. Anything from John Denver of course and anything from Pink Floyd, “Wish You Were Here” is what I am working on currently.
Once again, I thank you say much, you are the only formal instruction i have had and now i wish i would have been more serious 40 years ago.

I have always thought about this introduction and which has a real "sublime and heavenly sound" to it, especially with that G5 note coming in towards the end. All combined together, what wisdom! Gordon, same as with your tutorial on the intro to Matthew, this was awesome. I would love a tutorial on the entire song!

Gordon, I shed a lot of tears trying to figure this song out by ear, wow! I wanted to encore with it at one of my shows but I never could get it right or be confident with it. Now I think I'll take another crack at it.Thank you so much for this, you make seem (almost) easy! Particularly breaking down the picking pattern.

@@gLustig60 Yeah, I was working off of a blurry youtube version of a show he did in Japan, and you could only occasionally see his hands. This is great! What did we ever used to do before youtube? Well, I know that, I would go to shows with binoculars so I could see their hands LOL. I'm old.

@@amygallatin5196 And a little irony is that when I looked at my video, it was one of the first I did with a real camera, which I didn't know how to use. It's blurry too! And Shaky! Anyway, I've gotten a little better at that. BTW - I don't promote myself so don't misinterpret this, but I've been teaching since age 12, play every John Denver song, note for note, even played with his old band mates at the John Denver Tribute festival in Aspen a few years ago. So, if you'd like a Zoom lesson, at 1970s price, let me know. G

Hello Gordon - a new fan of your teaching here. After 16 + years, I wiped the dust off my guitar and was excited to start playing again. I was never very good but I always promised myself I would put in some real effort in when time allowed. I stumbled across your tutorial for Rhymes & Reasons (one of my most favorite John Denver songs), and I am hooked. It’s going to be a long time before I can play this well, and I only have a 6 string, but I am SO excited to be learning this from you (with you). Thank you SO much. I’ve already subscribed. I can’t wait for all the things I am going to learn from you.

Hi Denise, thanks so much for your kind words. I'm glad you've wiped the dust off your guitar and are playing again. Rhymes & Reasons will work on the 6-string but won't quite match the sound of the 12-string because of the high octave strings on the 12-string. Feel free to contact me anytime if you have questions about adapting it to 6-string or about any other guitar topics. Thanks again and have fun!!!
