8 years ago I weighed 280. Lost 40 lbs. was within 1 pound of the BMI chart. My Dr said I needed to put weight on. Got back up to 287. Now I’ve lost 10 lbs in a year. First weight loss was because of cancer. Second was and is 5 bulging disc’s and torn disc’s. Im down to one meal a day. Everyone tells me that that’s the wrong way but I believe if you loos it slow it doesn’t come back. By the way. The 40 lbs I lost was when I was in the hospital fitting the cancer. Lost it all in 40 days.

Keep up the great work Josh, you can't beat yourself up over the situation with the weight loss, everyone has good and bad day's. I know you used to smoke and I know you quit, so at least you have that going for you. The 20 lbs you lost is a achievement, it's not easy. You can tell you lost weight in your face, it seems slimmer. Great job Josh, high five brother, keep your head up, keep up the great work.

Dear Shadetree, ("Josh"), I love you brother. Watching your channel has been a non stop adventure. If any motorcycle can be an adventure bike, then I guess any TH-cam channel can be an adventure channel, but yours is one of the best. Life is a journey, realistically not always a beautiful or enjoyable journey, but worthwhile nonetheless. I have enjoyed watching you make your own way, and I am truly inspired by your spirit and attitude. I have always said, while you can't control your environment, or your emotions, you can control your actions. Keep on keeping on, brother! I hope you continue to see good results from your efforts, but visible results are relative/ meaningless. Being healthier and happier is very real, and I wish upon you the healthiest happiest outcome of all!

Hello Josh! Nice talking to you on the chat. Keep going on the weight loss, you are doing good. I was over 300 and am now in the 260s! Still working on it. I had a heart attack in Jan 2014 and got a stent put in. Since then I have had 4 more surgeries for afib and none worked. Last Feb I was in afib and my blood pressure went so low I blacked out and fell in my kitchen hurting my leg and knee plus hit my head in the doorway giving me a black eye for a month. Prior I was going into afib about once a week, since then I had one afib episode in the first of March and none since then. I am getting stronger and able to do more and more. After about 4 years of afib, I was very weak and rundown all the time. I could barely walk 50 feet without being very out of breath. Now I am back to walking more and more and thank God for the miracle of healing me. My prayers were answered. I live here in Los Angeles Ca if you are ever out here again and have time let's have lunch. I have an old Concours that I took apart to fix a fuel leak and haven't got it back together due to health problems. As I watch your channel and others I found I would love to have a big Vtwin and a Goldwing. Hopefully, someday another miracle will happen! I am 67 yrs old now, retired and on Social Security. I hope to make it to 100+ as many of my family have. So I will have a lot of time left to reach my goals. Best of luck to you my friend. Take care and God bless you all.

Week 5 for me boss, only lost .5 last week, but its all good still down 16lbs (287), Intermittent fasting and staying away from carbs and bad fat. I bought a smoker last week and I think it's going to help me a lot, made a bunch of delicious chicken and lasted me all week for salads, that and my instapot help me a lot. My favorite food is masked potatoes, I miss them. I have veggies, but I am learning. Now I love Mashed Cauliflower make it in the instalpot add some garlic to the instalpot, then add some cream cheese and grass fed butter, salt to taste. No shit, it's GREAT. 9 years ago on May 27th I was that guy lying on the gym reception area floor getting CPR from a paramedic doctor after my heart said f..it and stopped. I survived because talented people were there and knew what to do. Following that I talked to my cardiologist about life and such, and his advice to me, given the level of heart damage I have, was go and live your life, just be careful in what you do. Last year after traveling another 100,000km on my "scooters" I specifically asked him about my motorcycling and whether I should continue (my family worry). His advice was the same. Live your life with the added caveat, given the blood thinners, of don't hit your head. Good video Josh. Keep at it and keep em coming.

I have to say, in a brief moment of clarity, that I’m proud of Us, the collective WE. WE that realize that it’s important to love and care for ourselves, and push through to make our best attempt amidst all the OTHER responsibilities that lay before us daily. Josh, you truly continue to be an inspiration, and i promise, from one stranger to another, not to quit on myself if you don’t, And, I’ve got a good feeling about this. Also, I find it helps to remind myself, the more lean muscle you achieve ( no matter how seemingly SLOW), the more your metabolism will kick in to help you with “ the excess fat”. I find this motivates me, anyway. As for the diet….just try occasionally substituting a healthier food choice for the “ less healthy one” you really want😅🫠. Little steps , all. Keep at it Sir!

So no exercise or doing anything other then watching what i eat, walking what little i can and a prescription called Phentermine. You have to have blood drawn every 6 weeks to check your liver. But I’m down to 281 from 330 in Dec! So hopefully it will go even faster! Respect what ya did for a stranger in a parking lot man, mad respect! Keep uo the good work…… umm i mean bad work 😉

Relating to all those thoughts and emotions. My wake up call happened from the weekend after Thanksgiving 2021 to mid January 2022. I was 51yr old, 250 lbs and the heaviest I had ever weighed. It started with extreme fatigue then light headedness. Progressed to the feeling I was going to pass out and the anxiety, racing heart rate and panic that comes along for the ride. In and out of emergency rooms four times in that stretch. Turns out I had all the baddies, high blood pressure, Type 2 Diabetes, Cardiomyopathy plus I was a smoker. I decide right then to get back to living instead of just killing myself with really bad decisions. Now I'm down to 210, eating better, quit smoking putting in the work exercising. I had many and multiple motorcycles over the years but I had been out of cycling for 5 or 6 and had just bought a brand new Husqvarna Svartpilen 701 the spring before all the symptoms. Riding became my motivation to get into better shape so I could enjoy it more and for more years. Since added a Sporty 1200 Iron and currently have my eye on an Ultra Limited. My point is that no one gets out alive, live accordingly...You Got This Stay Shady

One thing that works for me when I am trying to lose weight is to not call it dieting. That creates in stigma in my feeble mind. That changes how you think about it. I prefer to call it retraining my eating habits. It takes 3 weeks to groove in new habits. If you call it dieting it feels like there is a negative connotation to it. But retraining your eating habits is easier. My cardiologist told me one time to not eat more food than the size of my fist. I can eat more often but don't eat more food than the size of my fist. It works. It works best with exercise. Good luck. We are all pulling (praying) for you. Peace!

Keep going and thanks for spreading the inspiration!

I started the Braggs apple cyder morning and night. Two tablespoons added to a 8oz water and well it works, it doesn't happen overnight but it helped me loose 30 pounds. I also trimmed down the carbs; I still eat carbs just less. Josh you are a very active person, I believe probiotics and a lower carb diet will make anyone achieve. Keep on keepin on brotherman, much love and support for you!
On a side note, I also have had the experience of facilitating the procedure of CPR when my father had a heart attack, I was 11 years old at the time and that memory of not saving his life still puts a whole in my heart 36 years later.

That combative behavior the guy exhibited is more common than you would think. In my short stint as an EMT, you have to be persistent to a point then, you go through the AMA (Against Medical Advice) release. All the while gauging their ability to make decisions for themselves. You and David did right by the guy. In the absense of one or more ladies seeing you off 😂, a couple of kind people isn't too bad either.

STS - I have a non functioning thyroid, which is probably the reason I have a hard time loosing weight, even with thyroid meds. Weight lifting and cardio, while it made me feel better and stronger, never had a measurable affect on my weight. Eating low carb, no refined sugar, minimal processed food, and mostly meat (yes, red meat as well) helped lose weight slightly and helped my blood tests immensely. Since going to Intermittent fasting (I am now eating 3 meals in 4 hours) and fasting 20 hours, I am now consistently losing half to 1 pound a week and feel great. I do plan for one day a week to eat a normal morning, noon and evening meal, and 1 time every week or two I have a cheat day of whatever I feel like. This has worked out for me. You may need to experiment some to find out what works for you.

Josh, in my 22 years working the streets as a Deputy I did CPR many times. I came on the job in 1981 retired in 2002. In all that time I did CPR I only bright one person back. It was during a Apple Festival and when the call came out all cars were blocked in. I was in the motor unit and I split that double line of cars on the Harley got to him fast. He had no pulse. I started the process and it sounded like chicken bones in a garbage disposal. Finally EMS got there put the AED on him and shocked him twice and he regained consciousness. He complained about how bad his chest hurt. Sad part, his two sons were just standing there doing nothing, never said thanks, but that’s not why we do the job. By the way, 20 pounds down is great. Don’t get discouraged. Im 5-11 and was 360! I’ve lost over 60 and still need too loose 100 more so I can get my knees and left hip replaced. I want to ride down to Tampa and visit the camp. Can’t find any sissies to ride with me. I can’t do it in one day because my hip won’t take it. Buying my ticket Thursday so wax that Beull up for me. Ride safe. You a good guy and this retCop would hang with you all anytime.

We have good days and bad days. Sadly we cant save everyone regardless of your efforts. It takes someone special and someone strong willed to do what you did. It will stick with you for a long time if not forever. I remember the first time I watch someone pass. There was nothing I could do. Nothing any of us in the back of the ambulance could do. you look great Josh. there will be ups and downs. brother, I was over 300 pounds when I started high school, this was in the 80's when bullying was tolerated and we didn't have "safe spaces" to run to, so I actually started walking, working out, and eating like a bird. I was able to lose weight gradually as I built muscle, then went from walking to running, and then when flexible enough, started skateboarding, and then it really started falling off. by my senior year, I was under 200 and people actually thought I was a new kid at school(because I became very private due to the bullying)...was funny in my 20's when I would see the main bullies out at a bar and they were scared that I would remember them and want payback LOL....stay strong and keep the journey, because brother....the destination is worth it!!!

Good luck with your journey! I used to be 300+ lbs too and lost over 100 (and kept it off for over ten years now) with diet and exercise. It’s tough and tougher at times but stick with it. Consistency is what works, all different diets and exercises work- they ALL work, you just have to stick with something and work hard at it and you’ll see results. Sugar was the big problem for me, cutting sugar and alcohol changed everything! but good luck man, I’ll keep watching for updates!

Josh: I prayed for help and this idea popped into my mind: Breakfast at Noon. Wake up in morn, drink water and fiber (wheat bran) eat nothing but a little coffee or juice until Noon. Then prepare a normal meal and eat about 2/3 of it, saving the rest for a light supper at 4 or 5 in the PM. Another cuppa joe mid afternoon, if you like. After 5:00 PM, I do my end-of-day dental hygiene routine then drink only water until Noon the next day. It works for me, to the tune of about one lb per week. Down 30 lb so far, 20 more to go for my fighting weight. BTW, too much meat while overweight will produce gout, very painful. Good luck, Z

I wish it was more and sometimes I get bummed out about it, but I keep trying and I remind myself I just have to keep the downward trend, no matter the pace. I ran across your channel a few months ago. My initial impression from that vid was just another moto vlogger. Over time and a few more videos I realized you’re probably one of the best moto vloggers out there. I have no doubt you are going to accomplish your goal of weight loss to a level that makes you happy and healthy. The thing about weight loss and getting healthy is just to try and not worry about it ( not make it a thing) to just attempt the small goals. I think your journey of weight loss will be similar to your videos. Great content in the beginning but not quite refined. Then it just starts to work and your videos became high quality that is a reflection of you and your personality. Keep up the good work.

Keep up th fight brother. Seven years ago I was injured on the job. While fighting with workers comp. about every little bit of treatment for my injury, I didn't realize that I gained 40lbs in the first five years. Then workers comp. finally said we will approve your surgery, but you have to complete a psych evaluation and go through a 2 hour ability test and lose the 40lbs that I had gained. So for the next 18 month I had to restrict my diet to lose the weight. Thanks to the injury I wasn't able to work out. If I stood or walked for more than 20 minutes I would lose feeling in my legs and if I pushed it too far my legs would give out on me and I would have to lay on the ground for at least 20 minutes to be able to stand up again. And I wasn't allowed to lift more than 20lbs. I know long way of saying I couldn't work out. I lost what I needed to and got my back surgery a month ago. You've got a killer work ethic from what I've seen on your channel, so physically I know you can do it. Retraining the brain that food is fuel not a reward is much more difficult, but I'm betting that you can do it.

I'm 71 and sold probably my last bike in Vancouver BC before moving to the Philippines for a cheaper retirement a little more than 6 months ago. I'm a little over 6 feet and have been as much as 220 which might not sound like a lot but it's amazing how hard it is to be disciplined enough to lose even 10 pounds. I still eat steak and pork chops and chicken thighs all the time, potato, wedge fries and french fries too. Almost all the things I love should be lopping years off my life, and I have to do more to get it under control. You're not alone.

I definitely have a similar relationship with food and it's tough rewiring things. Don't stop logging, and definitely keep making the videos. I've seen a lot of people slide on this (myself included) and it definitely slows or reverses progress.
I like roasting whole chickens in the oven, grocery stores sell them rotisserie style. Tilapia or salmon rocks too.
Just bought some Honda stickers from your site yesterday, I didn't realize you had so much cool stuff loaded, the Triumph design with the devil was sold out but I wanted that one too haha.

Honestly the legacy the guy dying in a car park leaves could be to save a fuck load of other lives through your highlighting of it. Honestly the Shadetree weight loss crew is what's going to save mine. 25 years of diets didn't, a personal trainer didn't, a suspected heart attack didn't, diabetes didn't, knowing I'm not alone & having a group may well.

when i'm on keto (right now) the meat i eat is burgers, fish, chicken breast, and bacon. I agree, it's a lifestyle change that's needed. And that's really the hard part. I love bread and pasta and it's going to be tough to change my eating habits surrounding those foods once I start adding them back into my diet. Going to have to cut down on how often I eat those and really pay attention to portion sizes.

Josh, I've been watching for a few years now and enjoy your content. While I haven't followed your weight loss journey until this video, it was great to hear you say that it's not a diet but a lifestyle change that will make the difference. I agree with that completely. Diet is a very important part though. The problem I've had with a lot of dietary information is that nearly all of it is theory and great results are not typical.
In my quest four years ago to help my 75 yo mother reverse the effects of dementia, I happened to learn about a source of information that I now believe is not only not theory but the truth and nothing but the truth about how our bodies work and how food, exercise, and spirituality can be used to prevent and reverse disease while countering the effects of the environment we've created which seems to be getting more and more toxic. And I'm not talking about climate change. The reason I believe it is the truth is because everything I learned would happen, has happened to not only my mom, but for my wife and me as well.
My mother is now 79 and my wife and I just turned 60. Three weeks after my mom moved in with us four years ago, she had severe abdominal pain. Long story short, she had emergency surgery due to a large tumor in her colon. It was stage 3 colon cancer. While recovering from the surgery she contracted severe pneumonia and nearly died from it. If it wasn't for what I had learned only months earlier, I believe she would have succumbed to it. Her oncologist wanted to put her on chemo therapy as a matter of course. I knew that would destroy her immune system so I explained what we were doing and he agreed, though reluctantly, to do a scan to see if there were any new tumors. There weren't and now four years later, with no chemo or medications of any kind, she's not only cancer free, but lost all of her excess weight, regained feeling in her feet, her skin conditions cleared up, and the dementia hasn't worsened. In fact she started dreaming again which she said she hadn't experienced for years before she moved in with us. She had been on a thyroid medication her entire adult life and she doesn't need that anymore. She's on no medication whatsoever.
I thought I was healthy when we started, albeit a little overweight, but I now have a list of about 18 different symptoms and conditions, that I thought were simply the normal aging process, that have either completely gone away or have dramatically improved. I feel at least 20 years younger! Don't need my prescription eyeglasses for nearsightedness anymore, my pelvic sprain and herniated discs in my spine seem to have healed because things that used to put me down for a day or so don't anymore, my life long cold feet and cold hands have normalized, my skin condition has dramatically improved, and twitches in my right hand have subsided, just to name a few. My wife also lost her excess weight. She suffered with IBS for 12 years and that has gone away. Just recently she started not needing her glasses as much (stigmatism). Her aches and pains have dramatically improved and she too feels much younger.
The great thing about the information I'm referring to is that it's relatively inexpensive and easy to learn. You do have to do some reading and be willing learn some things that are contrary to what we've been conditioned to believe. You can implement what you learn a little at a time and I believe you'll be amazed at how fast you'll see results. Most of what I described happened to us in the first six months. The timing does vary because everyone has a different mix of things going on in their bodies. My eyesight came be back in about six months, but my wife didn't notice a change until recently. But other things like her weight, that she couldn't lose no matter what she tried, melted off in a very short time.
There are currently 8 books available in this medical series. I always recommend 3 of them to start. With your permission, I'd be happy to gift them to you as token of my appreciation for the work you do. Two other books, the latest in the series, I believe would be very helpful for Cheyleesi's neurological symptoms. I would also be happy to gift those as well.
Let me know if you're interested. Keep it weird! ;-)

Down 20lbs in a month and a half, seems like a healthy start man. Not losing too much too quickly, shock to the body kind of thing. Happy for you man, 20 lbs might not seem like much, but your face looks a little slimmer, and the important thing is it's a start. You have done the hardest part, starting. Build the habit and it becomes second nature. This might not mean much coming from a 170 lb dude almost a decade younger. But I don't eat healthy, I should weigh over 300 lbs with all the junk I eat. But aside from maybe metabolism, I think my habit of eating in moderation, more small snacks throughout the day and lunch/dinner being my two main meals, helps keep me around the weight I'm at. I was 160 in 2015 when I joined the military, had gotten up to 185 by the time I got out 4 years later. And it wasn't muscle. But man, just keep at it, the pace you're going at might not keep up, it may not be another 20 lbs in a month and a half again, but it's still going to be progress. You'll feel better, more energized (and you're pretty energetic already in your videos). Just keep it up man. Need more Shadetree videos in my life for years to come.

Keep it up! 20 lbs becomes 30 becomes 40 if you keep at it. We’re (my wife has lost almost 100 pounds) eating the flesh of chicken, turkey, pork, salmon and shrimp. We’re eating smaller meals more often, and cutting most of the carbs out.
My biggest change is cutting out sugars.

Hey Josh , I am trying to do better than I have in the past with food. I am not calling it dieting, to me it is a lifestyle change. Most every day I wake up and take some medicine and I have to wait 30 minutes to eat, then I usually either eat cereal and fruit, or I will make me a sausage and egg sandwich with some hash browns. Then for lunch I have been either eating a tomato sandwich or fruit ( I really enjoy fruit) but sometimes I will make a ham sandwich. For supper I usually eat a salad and steak or chicken, the other week I had homemade burritos, if I don’t have a salad I have some kind of vegetables . I try to eat earlier in the evening around 5-6 . For most of my life with the work I did, I was bad to eat one meal a day and it was usually later in the evening when I was finished working. I have learned that eating once a day causes you to retain most of what you eat, and by eating three meals a day and sometimes a fruit snack in between, it causes my body to release what it doesn’t need because the body doesn’t fear starvation anymore. And I will also eat something sweet that is small, I do that to prevent having cravings ( cravings cause us to overeat) . I am not saying what I do is perfect but it works for me. You are doing great keep up the good work and keep up the good attitude. I don’t like to call what I do dieting because when I am dieting I feel like I am depriving myself of something.

You have achieved the first hurdle to attaining a healthy weight, the recognition of the problem and the desire to change.
You spoke of "dieting". Ninety nine percent of people who go on a "diet" to lose weight, go back to their unhealthy eating after hitting their target and end up heavier a couple of years later. This is "yo yo" dieting.
As a retired primary care physician, I encourage you to totally change (increase) your knowledge about nutrition and your personal needs. You have to learn to eat in a healthy manner for the rest of your life. You have an inappropriate relationship with food. You have to get out of "Food is a reward, and emotional crutch".
At age 71 I tell people the best exercise I ever learned was the "push away". By push away I mean that I do not always eat everything on my plate, particularly when I go out to eat.
Because we have to eat, and usually every day; it is a challenge to avoid over eating. One of the hardest things a person can do is to change their learned behavior.
Some people find that by reducing their time with food and drink, that reduces the chances of over eating. I have been eating one meal a day for the last twenty years.
Read about how fructose suppresses the negative feedback loop that your body naturally has to tell you that you are no longer hungry.

I'm on keto, and I do jalapeno poppers quite often. The method I personally do is I don't just put cream cheese in the pepper and wrap it in bacon. I actually buy shredded bacon pieces and mix it with my cream cheese, stuff the pepper then heat them through.. much easier to eat them when you're doing something, hell I don't even need a fork.
Chicken wings are also a nice easy go to, I use a Tabasco style sauce with some melted butter in it...If that's not your jam there are plenty of other sauces (e.g. lemon pepper + butter) that are 0 to low carb.. If chicken wings are out of budget, or just ungodly expensive for 1/3rd of the meat, legs are always an option, and with those, I just roast as normal and use something like Baby Rays (NOT SWEET BABY RAYS) or G Hughes Brand BBQ sauces to toss them in..or shit just do the wing treatment with the butter and Tabasco style sauce.
Chaffles are an amazing bread replacement and I highly recommend (literally just egg + cheese in a waffle iron). Simple sammich with lunch meat of choice with some kewpie or dukes mayonnaise.
You can also make sweet chaffles using protein powder, I like the quest caramel flavor. You can make a nice dessert with it, using some sugar free whipped cream (land o lakes, etc) with sugar free dark chocolate espresso sauce from jordans. zero sugar, zero carbs zero calories... but fuckin tasty.
Since you like steak and lettuce so much, jimmy johns has a sandwich called something like the gargantuan, and you can make it an unwich, which is basically the sandwich wrapped in lettuce... its fucking baller.. and I was full for the rest of the day, and most of the next after eating that bastard.
As far as wraps go, might be a little hard because they are street taco sized, but a brand called La Banderita makes carb counter tortillas 5g of carbs per tortilla, 25 calories each.. There are others, of course, but I found those recently which are both low cal and low carb.. Low carb tortillas usually use almond flour which makes them a bit tougher than normal tortillas, but you really cant tell much of a difference unless you do a side by side comparison...
I use the term "diet" like the discovery channel does... this is the diet of that creature.. its the way they live, the way they operate... diets are lifestyle changes like you said, and not temporary.

Here's something to think about too. I'm 48 years old and been overweight all my life because a congenital heart defect keeps me from getting enough exercise, and combined with a unhealthy "healthy" appetite, its been way too easy to gain weight and very difficult to lose it. I've lost 50 pounds over the last few years, and I've got another 50 to go, but it was too little too late. In January I had a mild stroke that messed up my sense of balance. I may never be able to ride safely because of that. Think about that. Your health directly affects your ability ride and poor physical health can instantly take it all away without any warning. What's worse than being dead? Living to regret your choices. Take care of yourself man, don't end up like I did.

Lets face it, trying to loose some weight is huge livechange and it brings a lot of challenges to overcome. It is not easy to change once own habbits but you also need to change peaple around you a bit.
In fact, you need only two things:
    1. Strength of will to keep going on
    2. Supportive friends and relatives.
The second one is even more important. You can try every trick but when your pack laugh at you for suddenly trying, or when they try to persuade you to join them in their feast, parties, your will is even more chalenged.
I managed to loos a lot once, I was younger, around 23-25y, living alone, flexible hours.. Lost some 30kg (65lbs). Managed to keep slim for few years, then I found myself in serious relations and my time was no longer mine. Long story short, now I am even more fat then before and trying again to lose some. It is hard as hell!

I used to watch farmers eat onion sandwiches With yellow mustard. Thick slice of yellow/sweet onion and bread with whatever kind of mustard you got. It's not bad. as a vegetarian I'd recommend marinating tofu, dredging it in cornstarch and smoked paprika and then frying in oil until crispy. Its amazing! Good luck brother.

I am also struggling with my weight. I have been inspired by STS to get busy working on the problem. I remember back in the day when I was in great shape. Army basic training was very effective. 27 billion push ups and vigorous exercise all day every day. At 52 that is not realistic at all but exercising periodically throughout the day is. I think that is the key. Eat right and exercise throughout the day. Go to the gym if you want. There is nothing wrong with that but I think it is not as effective as people expect it to be. Good diet, how you eat, when you eat and what you eat, plus all day exercise is key. Now you have my $0.02.
