I used to plant and harvest potatos with my grandparents. To plant the potatoes we used last years potatoes (it didn't matter if they were a bit wrinkled ) some already started to sprout), we cut them up (each cut up piece needs to have a sprout) and put them into earth in spring. The plant grows and so do the potatoes in the ground. When the potato plant eventually starts drying up August (mostly) you can start harvesting and digging up the potatos.

Floury potatos are packed with starch and they are crumbly when boiled wich makes it perfect for mashed potatos. Firm ones are more solid when boiled and it's important for potato salad because the slices you cut don't crumble apart when cutting and mixing 😊

2:56 - those figures are outdated.
Based on the Bundesinformationszentrum Landwirtschaft (BZL) [Federal Agricultural Information Center] the consumption of potatoes has risen from 55,7 Kg to 63,5 Kg (140 lbs) per person per year in Germany in the period from July 2023 through June 2024.

The slim Asians would disagree with you about the rice. Italians and southwest Germans would disagree with you about the pasta.

Potato salad = boiled potatoes cut into slices, onions, bacon, boiled eggs, cut and mayonaise, spices salt, pepper to taste and stir. Let rest in the refrigerator for 1 day. Bon appetit!

@realLaserjack oh yes i love this recipe 😊. As a german myself i'm still impressed of the numbers of regional variations of potato salads in our country or the millions of family recipes. A good potato salad is a good potato salad 😁

@@Kivas_Fajo Yes, there are 2 different types, I can't eat the Swabian because it makes me sick, with vinegar and oil. Just like spaetzle with lentils with vinegar.

It is so easy for young people today to find out about the culture, history, climate, fauna and flora of a country they are traveling to with just a few words. 30 years back I had to drive into town, go to the bookstore and buy and read big books.
Is it really too much to ask Siri or Alexa “What do people traditionally eat in Germany?” "Which vegetables grow in Germany?"
Nope, instead they make a completely unnecessary video in which they tell only stereotypes and prejudices, paid for by our broadcasting fees.
My goodness, the world is getting dumber and dumber!

Before watching your video...... I'm a german and i despise potatos...
    I don't hate them ... but i don't particularily like them either.......
I like Rice and Pasta _way_ more than Potatos..... Except, when you have really good and flavourful potatos .... or give me a good sauce ;)
O.k. .. now watching the video:
2:45 Yeah, we germans are a bit weird on that.... Throw a bunch of stuff in mayonaise ... and call it a salad........... srsly..... That's tomato salad ..... tomato slices and stuff in mayonaise. ;)

IDK if that's correct, but it origins from the Prussian King Friedrich II. And he pretty much brought the the founding of what we call germany (as there wasn't a germany before) on the road.
And he established the potatoe as THE ingredient or food in germany. At least it's said it's started during his reign as King of Prussia.

You make the big problem to compare todays Europe to the Europe at that time. For Germany a Kartoffel Plaque in Ireland had no consequences, while today a lot of companies would have already activated plans to offer special Variante that would fight against thesevthreads. The same companies that lost control.when they tried to get rid of "Linda" and they were quite shocked that people knew how to grow Linda when it lost its Patents. And that the Single Farmers were able to get seed Stocks, to maintain these potatos after the big Distributor eradicated this plant.

Well when the potato famine happened the countrys of europe wasn't connected very well. It wasn't a european problem so to say.
