This video blew my mind, as it made me think of two of my favourite anime characters who are also associated with birds, particularly the "bird in a cage" motif. First is Neiji Hyuga from Naruto, who I now see as a lot like William. As part of his clan's branch family, he was given a curse mark that is used to torture or even destroy the brains of branch members if they displease the main family. He calls himself a bird in a cage, though he eventually breaks free and sacrifices himself of his own volition. He hated his cousin Hinata, the clan heir, but after reconciling with her, becomes protective and supportive of (and possibly has romantic feelings for her). His personality is rather uptight, standoffish, and obsessed with rules and proving himself, leading to bouts of explosive rage. The other is Shiori Takatsuki from Revolutionary Girl Utena. 高枝 (Takaeda) are the first characters of her surname and given name, respectively: 'Taka' and 'Shi," ('shi' can also be read as 'eda'). This is assumed to refer to how Juri Arisugawa sees her, the out-of-reach object of her affection, but fits more with Shiori's view of Juri, her former best friend, who is extremely talented and so pretty that she's the cliched teen model. Each girl is secretly in love with the other, but won't admit their feelings. However, Shiori finds out (as do many other characters). She still won't admit her love, because this way Juri will always long for her, as if they were together, their love might eventually die. In Shiori's first episode (apart from flashbacks), she tries to rekindle their old friendship, but Juri storms out. A bird is shown flying after her and fatally crashing into the glass door Juri slammed. When Shiori duels, the arena is decorated with the same species of bird on golden perches, as she is a bird trapped in the cage of her poor self esteem and the idealised image of her that Juri is obsessed with, that she can never live up to. This is mirrored by Juri's locket with Shiori's picture inside. Juri keeps herself chained to Shiori, while Shiori remains trapped in the locket/ cage, unable to express her real feelings for Juri. Also, Shiori comes across as polite and reserved, when she's actually cooking up schemes for feeling better about herself and keeping others from getting close to Juri. Not exactly alike, but definite similarities. I think Black Butler took some inspiration from Utena.
@@alexander_yoko I would definitely recommend Utena. It's really fantastic! A lot of people today find it triggering, but it's no worse the Black Butler. The current distributors have the entire 39 episodes (though not the movie) available for free here on TH-cam.

It's possible that there's an inspiration. I don't know them, but all of these characters seem to be similar to William in a way.

Can ya do one for Grelliam being possibly cannon?
I already have videos about it, for now it's not canon but I feel like it has potential. I like their relationship dynamics regardless.
