Love the amount of detail you put into these reviews, all possible questions are answered clearly and uncomplicated. Thanks also for adding the comparison tables. 👍
Rory, just stumbled onto your channel while watching other rail/travel/adventure channels I watch on a weekend. Thank you for your "warts 'n' all" description of your experience with V/line (and their coach contractor, Dysons). I see you follow a similar format to Dylan Bowes (Dylans Travel Reports) of checking out the stations and the interior features of the services upon which you travel. As a former V/line employee, I'm glad you incorporated the customer unfriendly practice of making passengers wait until the last minute before being allowed to board the service. This has to be one of the most disgraceful aspects of rail travel in Australia and I apologise to everyone that has to endure it. Seems like a cattle herding practice straight from the Amtrak book of how to upset customers (I know from my own experience of Amtrak many years ago). Your coverage of the journey was most informative and I would recommend your channel to anyone seeking information on public transport services in Victoria. I'll mention your channel to Dylan when I next comment on one of his clips, also I'm in regular touch with Michael Downie of DownieLive based in Vancouver BC Canada who is a fan of rail travel (and adventure as well). Congratulations on this video and now I'll troll through some more of your offerings. Cheers from Michael.
Adding to the positive comments on your well put videos and review, I Love how you don’t add music and allow the natural environment sounds to be heard 👍
We love catching the train from Melbourne to Geelong. The first class section is no different than economy but must be pre booked. The seats are so comfortable and the journey is very relaxing, way better than coach.
Thank you. I enjoyed your trip video. I occasionally do this train trip, but also at least annually drive or fly to Canberra from Melbourne. (ps. CANBERRA, AUSTRALIAN CAPITAL TERRITORY is the SEAT of PARLIAMENT of the COMMONWEALTH of AUSTRALIA - or AUSTRALIA for short. - AUSSIE comprised 6 States & 2 Territories ->States are NSW,VIC,QLD,TAS,SA,WA & Territories NT & ACT.)
This is a great video and a great review of this service. I personally wish VLine is allowed to operate a Melbourne to Sydney rail service, alternating the service with NSW's XPT service.
Great Video again. The day I caught the Vline train from Wodonga to Melbourne . The AC didn't work on the train an it was 35 degree day. An experience I want forget. Will happily use train again.
Glad you've made that video before the N Class and N Sets are replaced by new modern long-haul VLocities. I might be able to try travel on the Albury Line from Southern Cross to Albury before it is taken over by long-haul VLocities. So I gotta take a glimpse before that happens in the not-too-distant future or late or early December 2021. As the date for the new trains are set to be by 2022. I've pretty much rode sometimes on the Bairnsdale up and downs N Class service a lot to get to and from Melbourne.
Good ole Yass, about 45 min from my parent's place, which is also where I grew up, so the run along the Barton Highway between Yass and Canberra is quite familiar to me :) Good to see you showed HMAS Otway at Holbrook. They used have stairs next to the sub, so you could climb up. Did you get to see the famous Dog on the Tuckerbox at Gundagai? What I found most interesting, was the price difference between between V Line and the XPT to Albury. Just goes to show how much a ripoff Trains for NSW, and the XPT, is.
@@RoryDing You wouldn't have seen the Dog in any case as the coach would have stayed on the Hume highway and the Dog is behind trees in a service area. It's about 8 kms to the north of the town. Great video, btw. I did this trip a few times many years ago. It hasn't changed much!
arokh72: I agree about the pricing. Perhaps it's something to do with the proportion of the trip spent on the train versus the bus. With NSW trains you have the choice of travelling to Cootamundra or Yass Junction and then transferring to the bus (it's the same bus from both stations) so more time on the train? Who knows? :-)
The seats in first class are similar to airplane seats, the fold out table thing on the back of the seat, the armrests and a few other things like the luggage rack and the tiny toilet Except there are no seat belts in the train
I honestly feel trains are more pleasant. I haven’t flown but I feel trains are nicer. Less rushed and complicated. Also you have more options and get varied views. Also you aren’t packed like a sardine. Having said that, I’ll have to see how I feel after I actually fly for the first time

NSW TrainLink XPT journey to Canberra - train to Yass Junction and then bus to Canberra is a much better journey experience - especially if you are travelling economy.
Travelled with nsw TrainLink three times from Mel to Canberra I prefer Vline cuz it arrives Canberra earlier than nsw TrainLink and as a student, Vline first class is cheaper than XPT economy
I have lived in both Sydney and Melbourne. Overall I prefer Sydney (weather, beaches, nature) but Southern Cross Station is better than Sydney Central Station.
What's the point of the bus leaving from Wodonga, if it meets the same train terminating at Albury? Is it something to do with VLine (VIC) buses not being able to originate in NSW?
It can, Vline has a 14hr bus service from Adelaide to Albury via Victoria I reckon because it’s a Victorian bus so part of the trip should be in Victoria? 😂😂
@@RoryDing thanks for the trip report I sent it to my mum to convince her to get the Train+ Coach to Canberra because I’m a train enthusiast and Mum isn’t every confident on a 4 hours coach so thanks!
It's kinda bizzare how Australia's capital city is so poorly connected transit-wise with the rest of at least the populated parts of the country. Canberra's railway station only serves Sydney and the station is tiny having just a single platform compared to WA, VIC, NSW and QLD's big cities and their termini.
It’s only the 8th biggest city in Australia, so after Sydney Melbourne Brisbane Perth Adelaide Gold Coast and Newcastle, Canberra Kingston probably is the busiest passenger train station in Australia 😂😂
