Just had Cummins perform this repair, it was $10K. Had to have a new timing cover due to vibration that eroded the aluminum against the steel gasket, down near the bottom corner near the engine mount, likely where the rubber was torn on the gasket from this Peterbilt. I've been told that the engineers did not put enough bolts to prevent this vibration which is what causes the covers to leak over time. Hopefully, the new cover, which is an updated design, is thicker in this area and will not vibrate as much...just my hope, I have no information, but would stand to reason. This is the best video that I've found on this repair. Thank you!!
The new cover should be a factory recall conditon or something. They shouldnt be allowed to just get away with that. Besides, you can give them the old weaker cover and they should give you the updated version and they can recycle the material of the housing. Ps. For cleaning the block and the cover, i found that a brass brush does a wonderful job getting the old gasket material off and not scratching the surface.

Hey great vids! just so you know there's an updated machined from solid steel retaining washer for the injector gear. That profiled/powdered metal retaining washer is not supposed to be reused.... There's a chance it will crack/chip off taking out the gear train.

From my bad experience adding silicone to the new oil cooler gasket (same engine) I caught it next day when checking with my Harbour freight camera inside that oil hole (THE GASKET RUBBER PART GOT PUSHED/RIPPED OUT AWAY FROM METAL CORE BY THAT SILICONE) HAD TO REDO EVERYTHING AGAIN:( so may be only add silicone to the farthest/opposite side of that rubber line and never over the rubber:( Also how I found the bad oil cooler gasket; drain oil out of oil filter when changing it, look for antifreeze... unless you're running the antifreeze pressure less, than I'm not sure if it may be pushed through when engine off (no oil press to hold against cooling system).
Not sure what you are getting at but I would have thought you would have plenty of oil in the cooling system before you saw it come out of the filter head
I would never remove all of that just to reseal a gear housing that is just a lot of extra work that doesn't need to be done I will bet if you were getting paid SRT you wouldn't either I have worked on these engines since they first came out I get paid by the hour and would never remove all of that extra stuff just to make it easier
You might have an issue with the waste gate, or if your lacking overall power /boost try replacing the exhaust back pressure. It is located in the top of the thermostat housing

You can make an account on quick serve cummins, google it, punch in your engine serial number, at the top, select service, then find the service manual. The three lines on the top left of the window it opens has a bunch of menu options and you can select engine assembly then go to the component (gear timing for the timing and itll tell you everything you need to know) you can find all the torque specs and sequence on there for everything to do with your engine.
Any negatives about putting blue Loctite on any of the small bolts inside the case? I'm going to do this myself because the dealer quoted me $19000 to get this done
I had this done and the shop didn’t insert a bolt with a washer all the way and backed off and oval the hole on the block. Had to replace the block was a pain in the ass and wiped out my banking account down for 2 months.
Weird cause I got a kw900 it's listed as a single cam but the cm870 uses mechanical injectors so it has a gear but still a single cam... Man I hate ISX Cummins

For cleaning the cover and block and camshaft snout, i suggest a brass brush. It wont scratch the surface at all but will take a bit of time to scrub.

Do you believe the old isx found in the 2004 trucks is a problem engine? I am looking at one now but, it seems to be problem prone from my research.
The earlier engines are a lot better. But have seen some that still need liner correction. As for cover gasket they all eventually fail from age.

Make the job easier remove engine hood and radiator , sand and repaint dampner and use a good quality paint pencil to re- mark .
Easier yes, but at an added cost to the customer. This truck needed to get back to work.
