    I harvested a red cabbage this week which was lovely. I was given some beets which I boiled and pickled for Christmas I was also given a lot of apples but our allotment society had its fruit press stolen so I puréed the apples and made 2 crumbles (one for family) oh and I dehydrated some apples too my first use of another free cycle find I washed my greenhouse down and potted on some greens and put some spuds under my seed table in the poly..And I popped some small lettuces into a gutter I hung In the greenhouse Another busy week in Sheffield where it’s getting cooler. Thanks for your great videos as always.

    Another excellent video, Barry. I envy you your Polytunnel and Greenhouse, I have room for only a 10x6 ft Greenhouse at home but I can still grow a reasonable amount in it. In my part of Hertfordshire it has been a mixed year because of the weather. The successes have been Peas and Beans of all sorts, Courgettes and Squashes, Potatoes and all the Brassicas except Cauliflowers that were slugged. Surprisingly my outdoor tomatoes, variety Crimson Crush, have produced a huge crop most of which have ripened. In the fruit area my forty plus year old cultivated Blackberry at home produced one of its best crops and on my small fruit allotment plot I have had an enormous crop of apples and pears, the best since I took it on six years ago which is surprising as there has been a marked lack of pollinating insects and butterflies this year. Apart from the Cauliflowers the failures were onions and shallots from seed that just did not get going and even the fifty onion sets I planted were pretty poor. My Strawberries looked very promising with a heavy set of fruit but about two thirds just rotted on the plants because of the wet weather earlier in the Spring. Just as well we gardeners are optimists! Roll on next year.

    • @nodignorfolkgardener4575
      @nodignorfolkgardener4575  วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      Hi Mike, lovely to hear from you again! The poly tunnel has been a game changer for us, but good to hear your greenhouse has been productive. I agree peas, beans, courgettes, squashes, potatoes and brassicas have thrived this season. Shame about the cauliflowers. Crimson crush are a great variety and most years produce well. All fruit has done amazing this year and I'm pleased for you that you have found the same too. A forty year old blackberry is fantastic. Our onions have been great this year as I'm sure you have seen so I am sorry to hear about your losses. As you say we are an optimistic bunch us gardeners and as I like to say there is always next year!

      sorry about your onions. Mine have been good this year but for the 2nd year running my leeks have failed. Allium leaf miner, despite meshing the bed, So annoying as they were growing lovely in the tray. I grew Crimson Crush for the first time this year. I have found the plants prolific with large trusses of large tomatoes, but they have been so slow to ripen. Happy gardening 🙂

    Hi Barry, You do very well with your brassicas. I have Brussel Sprouts, Rudolph and Claret PSB all growing well. I'm going to really focus on Cabbages next season as I never do well with them.

    Your brassicas are so clean of insect damage. We must have more pests here. Even with covering I get a ton of white flies and aphids of some sort every year late summer and early autumn. I spray several times a week with insecticidal soap and neem just to try and keep them at bay.
    On a brighter note, I grew brilliant celeriac this year and although I lost one plant they did much better than the Giant Prague I grew last year. And I have a variety of lettuce, endive, spinach and arugula growing in the hope at least some survive the winter and provide me greens so I don't have to purchase muchduring the cold season.

    Hi Barry & Mrs W. Gosh your brassicas are looking amazing. I was late putting mine in this year- no sce on the plot. I only planted most about 2 weeks ago and have just popped some more Jan King in today- they will bea more like march king king now, ha ha. I did plnt some earlier though which are doing great. My sprouts, Red ball, are forming buttons at the bottom of the stem, so hope there will be plenty for Christmas. I have some lovely red cabbage, red drumhead which I am currently harvesting. I love it raw, shredded with lemon mayonnaise or braised with red onion and apple, with cinnamon. What variety is your Cauli please? It looks so healthy. I am also growing 'Vertus' savoy, which is growing beautifully. Now cropping Cavolo \Nero- my favourite kale and plenty of Curly kale, celery, salads, cucumbers, tomatoes and peppers. Pak choi is coming on beautifully, as are the Asian greens, komatsuna and lambs lettuce. My claytonia is looking a little leggie and wondering if my 4 melons will ripen successfully before the weather cools right down. Too many apples and pears- giving them away to neighbour and friends. I've had plenty of cut flowers to make the house look pretty including dahlias, cosmos, sunflower, penstemon, Rudbeckia and Michaelmas daisies. I like to grow a lot to take in a bouquet to my neighbour weekly as she is too poorly to get outside so I like to take the outside in to her and bring some joy I hope. P.S. sorry I have just heard you say the cauli variety, thank you. 🙂I always leave my cabbages to produce 'pups'after cutting the main head. So useful to extend the crop. I am so looking forward to harvesting th parsnips. Just gorgeous roasted on a chilly winter's day. Slugs nearly finished my Romanesco off, but they are fighting back and now growing well. I've had some great kohl rabi and put in some new plants 4 weeks ago which are growing well. Any way, sorry for the essay. Happy gardening 🙂
