I'm a rust proofing worker and I can tell you after being underneath almost a thousand cars, DONT BUY A GM. They have rusted frames fresh of the fucking showroom floor. It's almost like they used baby powder to paint to the frames on these things.
@@stevee8318 Most Toyotas after 06 are solid, VAG, Post Chrysler Merger Mercs and Hondas after 06 are solid if you watch the rear quarter panels and give them a wash every now and then in winter. Heavy duty Ford and Ram trucks of the last decade are surprisingly stout as far as the frames go. The bodies are a different story but nowhere near as bad as GM in terms of weather resistance. Mazdas are still garbage despite their promises to fix their rust issues. Kia isn't much better.
@@slowgoat6089 Washing isn't the issue. The metals and "paint" they use will fall apart if you look that them wrong. My 06 Civic is a shitbox with 260,000 kms on it. I only wash it maybe 4 times a year and the undercarriage is still clean with minor surface rust after maybe 2 rust proofing jobs. I've seen customers come in with the same GM cars every year for the last 5 years and the frames still manage to end up with a new hole or chunk gone out of them somehow. Once the rust starts on a GM product, there's almost no way to stop it.
Shaiyan Hossain probably 😂😂 see cheap 80s dashboard looked cheap back then too but looked good, because well it was the 80s. There wasn’t anything better, in trucks that is. But for it to look like this fucking junk in 2020, well that’s sad. Lmao 😂
I have no objections against a durable plastic interior in a 30k - 40k work truck. But when you get to 50k+... they should have upgraded the interior for the higher trims.
My hemi of 110k miles has been fine with it reliability wise, you just need to stay on top of your oil changes. Issues arise with these systems because so many people trust the 15k miles per oil change on the oil bottle rather than following the 6k on their maintenance manual, then blame the manufacturers. People confuse "bulletproof" and "maintenance proof" all the time and end up murdering their engines via neglect. You can clearly tell when its in 4 cylinder though which is annoying, even though you get used to it. But according to just about everyone who drove these new DFM ones, you can't feel the deactivation at all since its dynamic with your foot and this is the first review ive heard say its clunky, and that includes other reviewers who also bash on cylinder deactivation.
@@james2042 You can't feel anything when a DFM engine deactivates cylinders. It's impressive. You're absolutely right. These systems are reliable, but the oil needs to be changed by ~ 5 to 6k miles.
Nice review. Glad your holding GM's feet to the fire with the cylinder management debackle. Might also be worth mentioning that when Toyota had an issue with frames rusting out on their medium and large trucks, they gave every truck one free frame replacement, even if it wasn't the original owner. GM's track record of support isn't as good as their competition. For something that costs practically $60,000 to drive it of the lot, this is unacceptable.
Love your videos and your humor. Bought a 2020 Silverado last week and this video made me feel a little bad at first. But hey. I get it. I do feel like there is a disconnect between the reviewers and the buyers on these 2020 GM trucks. Every review beats it’s exterior styling and on the interior. But in the real world GM sold more Silverados & Sierras in Q1 than Ford F150s and blew Ram away. I’ll admit there are things on the Ford and Ram that are nicer on the inside but Chevy does have some innovative storage compartments and things the other don’t have. I got the 2.7T since I use the truck more as a dad sedan. I’m actually getting 21 and better at the pump. That’s with a crew size 4x4 on 20s. I’m really impressed with it. My 2020 LT Chevrolet has things my brothers 2018 Lariat F-150 doesn’t have. Edit: I’m no Chevy fanboy, this is my first Chevrolet truck. I’ve owned several f-150s and 1 Ram before.
I work for a rental agency and drive these and Fords and Ram's daily, sometimes long distance's and sometimes just across town, but these GM's are the worst of the three, Ford feels the most solid, Ram feels the most plush, these GM's are crap though.
When I was shopping for a truck, I test drove all of them for the exact reason you guys pointed out. $50k is a LOT of money for a truck. We settled on an Ecoboost F150 because good luck finding a 6.2L Silverado. Also the Chevy interior sucks. I didn’t like the shifter in the RAM, the Tundra had terrible MPG, Nissan has weird options with the Pro-4x, and I can’t stress how much the Silverado really sucks compared to the competition. Ford even offers a selectable locker in 2WD if you want! And you can get it in 4x4 (with low range!) without the FX-4 package.
MrJamesLuz the ford interiors aren’t all that nicer compared to the Chevy if anything they’re equal, also on the Silverados you can also get it in 4x4 without the Z71 package

Excellent!!!! Two features I deplore in modern vehicles, cylinder deactivation, and engine start/stops at traffic lights. From this point forward, it's resto-mods for me.
these guys are certainly the best reviewers I have seen. I was so glad to get rid of my Canyon because the seats were so bad. Too bad in a truck that costs so much more they couldn't fix that. Felt like my head was resting on a rock to the point where I had to use foam and a towel and safety pins to fashion myself a pad to go over the head rest so that I didn't get severe neck pain after 5 minutes in the seat.
It is better looking than the other models they had with the square fender wells for the wheels. (lets build a square hole and put a round peg in it look...)
My youtube name aside, I've had the 2013 version of the Silverado with absolutely no issues what so ever. There is a vocal minority on gm forums that cry about burning oil. However, the majority of people don't have this problem. Think about it, if it was as wide spread as most people thought. There would be a class action lawsuit appearing, and it's been how many years? A decade and a half? I'm not saying people didn't have issues, but these are the same people who don't change their oil on time more than likely. Then they are surprised when something bad happens. I actually choose the 2019 Custom (The cloth seats, which is better than leather by the way, are very supportive) this time because I like the front end more, and then I added stuff onto it. I didn't use half the stuff in my old LT. I love the styling. I think the mob of the internet is making people not use their brains again. "Oh.. 5 people here on this forum or twitter don't like it.. I want to be included in this group.. Hey guys, I don't like it either hurr hurr hurr! Please be my friend!" Also, having tested the newer rams.. Yeah, the ride might be a smidgen better, but then I thought.. I want my electronics to work in 5 years. FCA can't hire a good electrical engineer to save their lives. Having owned several FCA products over the years, it comes down to bad ground contacts and improper wire gauges. They can build a good engine, sure, but wiring a power window? Forget about it. Tested a 2019 Ford, interior quality was the same. I just have questions about the longevity of turbos. Even with their cooling systems attached to it. To be honest, I was dead even with both the Ford and Chevy. I just like the styling of the Chevy better. The Ford is pretty much a box with lights. It's like it was designed by U-Haul. I just don't see how anybody would choose a RAM product at all. Their overall reliability is sub-par when you compare them to Ford and Chevy. I know reviewers love to gush over the interiors of these things, though. Then they go "Why wouldn't you buy this?!" Well, because I don't want to be stuck on the side of the road with failing electrical components. If anybody should be getting an extended warranty, it's FCA owners. I did like the video, though. Good job, guys! :)
Silverado Nomads all the things you just said a ford or Ram guy could make the same opinion about about GM I’ve owned more gm products new by the way and had bad luck after a 100,000 miles . Trying to stick with them but competition is tight and the products are very close
I'm glad they pointed out the oil problem because even if it is rare, it is something that most buyers would rather avoid. And it's very useful to know that there is another (better) V-8 engine option.
@@zzanatos2001 Oh, I don't disagree with that at all. It's the job of the reviewer to mention all items, good and bad. Which is why I like watching this channel. I will say that it's the best car review page on youtube. :)
GM bean counters still insist on wax dipping the frames as the only corrosion protection. You can scrape it off to bare metal with your fingernail, and on a hot day you can wipe it right off with a towel. Toyota learned their lesson on that years ago, and they actually replaced frames at no cost under a special extended warranty program. Would GM ever do that?
@rockn roll I do rust proofing during the busy season. The frames are chalky and crusty before a full year has passed. After 5 years you can take an air gun and blow fistfuls of rust out of every hole on them. They're awful.
@@wint_62 it's either the best.........or the worst. I have it in WT trim and all black with a black deflector makes a HUGE difference. Either way I have a thing for ugly ass trucks...lol
S Wint62 I agree. This is the best looking front end of the segment hands down for me. You ever wonder if the people who so badly want GM to believe this truck in particular and all of their products are so hideous are the same people that blew the 19’ Camaro design out of proportion and trolled it so ridiculously to the point where GM switched it up for 2020 model year?
I was working at a GM dealership when these came out. Felt very smooth compared to my 2002 but I didn't like the styling or the increasingly tall cabin and box. Feels like sitting in an Express van now. And they still WAX the paper thin frame. A non-AFM V8 option would be nice. The old 99-06 LS-based motors are rock solid.
Around the time I recommended a family member buy a Ford F150 for work I had to rent a vehicle. I rented a brand new Silverado. The Ford was two years old and I rode better and handled much better than the Chevy. The Chevy also felt really cheap. GM quality has gone down to the point I would never buy any of their products.
derfandme Agree! And his comment about the 10 speed being better in the Silverado...ummm...WHAT?!?! He’s literally the ONLY reviewer I’ve heard or read say that.
Same. I rented a 2020 F-150 and the cabin size is larger with superior quality and feel. I rented the 2020 Silverado the following weekend and quality felt like crap. It just looks sexy on the outside.

Great review guys! You confirmed a lot of the knocks against this new 2019 generation. I have a 2016 Z71 and I love it, and I was sad to see the 2019 models and how they ruined the interiors. Absolutely terrible interior design and fit & finish! I don't mind the exterior on certain models such as the Trail Boss, i think it looks pretty good. However, you are totally right, compared to the other 2 American competitors, they have fallen behind! I'm glad I don't need a new truck any time soon. I'll wait for the next gen Silverado since I've always loved Silverados. I'm just very disappointed with how far back they've gone in this generation. Maybe GM will listen to us and fix all this crap in the next gen Silverado in another 4-6 years.

I dislike that the Tundra doesnt have a locking diff like any American truck has. Good luck off roading, but hey, at least you have real dual exhaust...
@@andybub45 Good luck off roading? Baha1000 stock class winner when the Raptor could never compete. In fact the 1st Gen Raptor NEVER finished in the stock class. You people harping about lockers forget that TC can do at the very least 80% of what MOST buyers will use these trucks for. Been through cross axle undulations with full articulation on the truck with literally no need for a locker. Maybe you should learn how to drive your truck instead of having to rely on a locker. There's a point at which a locker is needed, most driving situations do not require it.
@@d1sturb3d119 ^^^this is what digging a hole looks like. There are COUNTLESS situations off-roading where a mechanical lsd comes into play...it has to do with getting traction in loose driving surfaces and not flexing/articulation
@@papa_pt An LSD and locker are two different things though. If you're running a torsen you may as well have an open diff. Clutch type LSD's are great but not for off road use. A locker would be useful in a lot of situations. Suffice to say most situations folks get into do not require a locker. I've been on quite a few trails with my GX fully loaded and even then I never used a locker. Flexing and articulation is what causes low traction situations to develop. The goal is to keep all 4 wheels on the ground as much as possible ensuring optimum traction. That is 4x4 101. The more flex and articulation you have the higher the chance of getting to the limits of that articulation which is exactly why I said it. Even with fully unloaded suspension with the tire now failing to make contact with the surface, TC can improve the situation in most of the time. Learning to drive the right line is a much more important skill. Even in those situations if you have a hard time, ride the brake and get the vehicle to crawl through it. Lockers are helpful but a better driver is much more useful. There used to be a time when 4 wheeling only meant relying on 4wd with no lockers at all. We still got around irrespective. Hell we used to wheel with pizza cutters and open diff's for god sakes. You folks buying a stock truck aren't taking these things to the hardest trails out there which is why TC would be more than enough for most consumers. With today's traction control unless you are pushing the limits of the vehicle a locker is crutch for shit drivers. Seen plenty of trucks with lockers struggle purely because the driver thought he had a silver bullet and picked a shit line.
the pick up market is absolutely out of logic to me. I understand that there must be a "Premium" segment, for people with money to spare, but most people, the blue collar workers, spending 50-60K on a work vehicle? crazy. I would buy a comfortable sedan, for the family, for 30-35K and a truck to work for 15-20K at most ...
For accessing mines I rent these trucks (4x4 crew cab, chevy/gmc, ram and ford) for about a week 6 times a year for the last 6 years, so not quite 40 of them over the last 6 years. I've had equally good/bad experiences with all of them. The biggest indicator of reliability is the trim level, the lower the trim level the more reliable - like if it's got a sunroof it's about 50/50 that that works. If it's a full ton it's maybe half as reliable as the 1/2 ton. If reliability is key go cheap, get the cheapest one that meets your needs, the more you pay the less you get. The comments about the interior don't register with me, all of these trucks function practically identical inside.
I had a 2018 1500 4.3 4x4. Never did idle smooth also the shake from the AFM system was a nice feature as well. Took it to the dealer 5 times but because no engine lights or codes they couldn’t / wouldn’t do anything. Finally had the motor mount changed under a service letter and it did nothing. Drove straight to a ford dealer after the motor mounts and traded it in for a 2020 F150. Couldn’t be happier now!!
The trailboss trim is okay-looking, but GM still has yet to shed that chintzy look both inside and out. If they ditched most of their plastichrome trim and used interior plastics that don't turn shiny and greasy within 3k miles their products would look decent. My mom's 60K mile Honda Fit looks nicer inside than your average GM product with low miles. The same can be said for most Fords as well. Compared to the RAM, this thing looks like it came straight from Fisher Price.

I am hoping to see prices drop and get a good deal on a new truck. However, I'm not sure prices will fall that much because factories are closed, and they're not cranking out thousands of vehicles right now - so finding the truck I want with the right options might be difficult.
Zachary Zarko I got a pretty good deal on a 2500 Duramax LT last week...just need to look around...it wasn’t a complete steal but about 8k off MSRP and a generous trade...
I always enjoy your reviews. I shopped Ford, Ram, Chevy, and Toyota. I purchased the 2020 LT Trailboss at 42K after rebates and dealer discounts with lifetime powertrain warranty. I got cloth seats which to me seem very comfortable. The interior isn’t pretty but really has everything you would need. I feel like it handles and drives really well over all and with the 5.3 and 10 speed auto trans I am getting 18 mpg over all. The look is subjective and for me I find it to be a great looking truck. More futuristic and not so traditional and boring to look at. I didn’t choose Toyota because of bad fuel economy and with a bench front seat you get nothing but a basic somewhat outdated truck with the Tundra. Ford was nice but I wasn’t able to find one packaged the way I wanted with bench front seating and when I did it was much more on price. Ram has great interior and the Rebel is the sweet spot for me but I don’t trust the reliability over the long haul with FCA product. I like the ruggedness of a truck specifically and with the factory two inch lift and absence of Chrome as well as off-road tires and good packaging with bench seat matched with a fair price I had to choose the Boss. I’m not biased to any brand and wanted a Tundra originally due to history of reliability and they too are great looking trucks. It’s only been a few months, but so far I am really happy with the purchase.
I agree last gens exterior was awesome but it got let down so hard by the interior. This redesign should have been the other way around they should have completely redesigned the interior and kept the exterior
Sideways G what I meant was, when I drove a 2017 Nissan Altima, and saw how this truck accelerated and shifted, I couldn’t help but think about the Nissan, throws the revs all the way up and it basically sounds like the “shifting” is choking it. The way the Silverado holds its revs and quickly throws them down like 2,000 rpms and brings them back up again, is very similar to how Nissan does it with their CVT’s.
Mark, you need to do a video on car shopping during this lockdown. From what I am getting, dealers are not really offering any discounts except for 0% interest financing for 84 months. To me, that puts people further into debt.

There is no turbo v6 option on the GM trucks. There is a NA v6, turbo in-line 4, turbo diesel, and two v8 engines.
kruck96 it’s a 2.7 liter which is unusually big for a 4 cylinder but I doubt he realized it was inline
He was not mistaken.
He was referencing the 4.3l gas v6, which is an option on the Custom Trail Boss trim level, as well as other lower trim silverados.
It’s actually a great engine for its fleet-oriented class.
I'm going to miss the 4.3L when the 2.7L replace it.
I'm a rust proofing worker and I can tell you after being underneath almost a thousand cars, DONT BUY A GM. They have rusted frames fresh of the fucking showroom floor. It's almost like they used baby powder to paint to the frames on these things.

Which manufacturers are good from your perspective?

I have no objections against a durable plastic interior in a 30k - 40k work truck. But when you get to 50k+... they should have upgraded the interior for the higher trims.
Cylinder shutoffs seem like such a bad idea. Another good SavageGeese review.

I like the rust starting on the frame already on a 2020.
I work for a rental agency and drive these and Fords and Ram's daily, sometimes long distance's and sometimes just across town, but these GM's are the worst of the three, Ford feels the most solid, Ram feels the most plush, these GM's are crap though.
Lets play a guessing game. Where will these trucks rust out in 7 years?
It is too bad, because not long ago GM half tons were arguably top of the class.

Awesome videos. Literally my go to for a honest review. Most don’t point out flaws.
Jack great review! Yelling at your wife in the Applebees parking lot made me laugh out loud.
Please be my friend!"
Also, having tested the newer rams..
While I disagree with many things you said, that was a well written and well supported opinion.
Range control would be a must for me to de activate AFM. I like all 8 cylinders firing!!

They've had rust issues since 2015. 2 years old and the frame is completely orange
I test drove a couple of these and honestly I thought the ride was the best ride I've ever felt in a truck

One of the best reviews I have seen on this truck.
No bullshit
the pick up market is absolutely out of logic to me. I understand that there must be a "Premium" segment, for people with money to spare, but most people, the blue collar workers, spending 50-60K on a work vehicle? crazy. I would buy a comfortable sedan, for the family, for 30-35K and a truck to work for 15-20K at most ...
Most people like having one vehicle to do it all, and if it is a work truck its (accounting) depreciation can likely be a tax deduction.

The trailboss trim is okay-looking, but GM still has yet to shed that chintzy look both inside and out. If they ditched most of their plastichrome trim and used interior plastics that don't turn shiny and greasy within 3k miles their products would look decent. AFM came out 2007 in the second generation of silverado. That's is not new and people already know what are the common problems. Just change oil in a good way.
Oil changes don't help if/when there's a problem with any of those solenoids.
AFM got some updates in 2015
@@zzanatos2001 yeah but they act up around 150k miles (good oil changes). Ppl just rebuild them and they keep going.
@@savagegeese still do the same thing. V4 to v8 tho
AFM can be turned off via a software programming. Lt1swap.com.
Congrats on another 50K subs. Climbing fast!
You know the Grand Sport has the same fuel management! I just got one of the defeat-devices to keep that from damaging the motor in mine.
David Street if you have a manual it doesn’t go into afm unless you put it in eco
@@jackholmes8105 manuals don't have the feature at all which is why their highway fuel economy is 4 mpg lower. it is literally disabled at a hardware level because you would destroy it (and the engine) with a manual trans.
"Yell at your wife in the Applebee's parking lot - mean". Now that's a new one for me 😂
If you know up front that you're going to need an extended warranty to get you to 100K (and you will) then you probably shouldn't buy that vehicle.
I have no loyalty to any company. A truck is simply a tool for me and I want one that doesn't give me trouble. My last Chevy, a 2013, will be my last.
I have 107K miles on a 05 half ton 4X4 Chevy and have had to replace both front wheel bearings, a drive shaft U-joint (50K) my dash gauges are starting to go gaflinkus and have replaced the rocker panels and fixed the box rust.... Oh I Ziebarted the damn thing brand new and I wash the hell out of it and keep it in the shed. I have been a GM man for 50 years but my patience is running thin.
I had to add one thing. I also believe GM has a agreement with OPEC as the amount of petro-chemical plastics used in the interior is insane. I know it started back in the late 80's with GM but, damn.
I had a 2015 Silverado High Country, which was a first automatic transmission I ever had (and very last), and 5 months ago at 20k miles, the transmission failed. I got rid of it for a 2020 Kia Soul with a 6 spd mt which feels like a massive upgrade, after rethinking the reason why I even got a pickup in a first place
New car prices are gonna crash
I am hoping to see prices drop and get a good deal on a new truck. However, I'm not sure prices will fall that much because factories are closed, and they're not cranking out thousands of vehicles right now - so finding the truck I want with the right options might be difficult.
Zachary Zarko I got a pretty good deal on a 2500 Duramax LT last week...just need to look around...it wasn’t a complete steal but about 8k off MSRP and a generous trade...
🤣Dream on . . .
They would rather go bankrupt than give you a deal... used car prices on the other hand..
@@venictos well we are going into America 2.0 people are t going to have hand out jobs. So people wont just be willing to have a big car payment
Still can't over the face lift it got in 2019. Previous generation looked WAYY better.
I agree last gens exterior was awesome but it got let down so hard by the interior. This redesign should have been the other way around they should have completely redesigned the interior and kept the exterior
that intro was stunning. thank you.
That truck “shifts” like a CVT in a Nissan
@Sideways G a cvt doesn't shift thats why he put quotation marks. And nowhere does he say smoothly.
So why are you taking some guy with a sad life's word over the reviewer?
@Sideways G comparing a trans thats not a cvt to a cvt especially one in a nissan is not a compliment.
Got a satin steel 2020 Trail Boss. Love it no issues so far.
10,000 people on the project, most from marketing? So Chevy is the Burger King of the automotive world.
theBatmanGoeth2 🤣
Mark, you need to do a video on car shopping during this lockdown. From what I am getting, dealers are not really offering any discounts except for 0% interest financing for 84 months. To me, that puts people further into debt.
So basically it's a GM product designed for one thing: Sales Numbers. Quality and reliability? Who cares, we'll just sell them for cheaper than the competition!
Miles Traysandor no...
You're thinking of the Tacoma.
This a great honest review. Great video.
Thank you 🙏
