Yes we got lost in the flooded trees several times! Hiked and camped from boat bunches there. I could tell stories! Got to get back!
I know the area well. One time years ago before most of the timber broke down I was in my boat with a friend and the wind was blowing. I was looking for the old lane between the timber on the east side of wolf island looking for shelter and a safe point to turn. Turned to look for it and miss timed the next wave and speared it! Water over the bow and a boat full of waster in an instant. We managed to take shelter and pump out the water by wolf island and lived to tell the story. That area is exposed and can get VERY rough so kayakers be advised... I saw a Bald Eagle in Lick Creek once. He/She was perched on the tallest tree in the creek at the very top just checking things out. That bird was close to 3 ft tall. Majestic!

5:05 if you go up into those rocks up in that southern tip there's a den of some animal that's been going to town on the deer with about four or five deer skeletons all around and in the den. saw that today, was kinda cool. im guessing a bobcat but i dont know if they can take down a deer.
Hi Daniel, thank you for watching and commenting! Oh wow, I will check it out on the southern tip of the island. There are a lot of cool rock formations up there I know. I have seen dead Deers before and I have talked to game wardens that have been on the island looking for poachers that poachers are a problem there. It might be more likely that the dead deer 🦌 have just been poached and backstrap taken out as well as a few other items. Merry Christmas to you and safe adventuring in 2022!
I've been going back and forth in my head on if I should get a Oru Kayak. My current kayak is 70plus lbs and I have to store it outside. Every time I see you in your Oru, my savings account quakes with fear.
Hey Cliff. I think I might’ve run into you yesterday on Lewisville at Sycamore Bend. Didn’t occur to me it was you until after you left (if it was you). I was in the blue fishing yak and we launched about the same time. Been watching your videos for a while now. You do a great job detailing the paddling trails around here. Anyway thanks for doing what you do. I look forward to more videos!
tHE SPiRaL Hey there - no, I was not kayaking yesterday, although I wish I was! Too many projects around the house. I did get out for a nice bike ride though! Safe paddling in 2019, maybe our paths will cross sometime.

gsansoucie I either keep it in a small yeti dry bag or a pelican case. I love the spark, because it is very small and easy to take with me. If I lose it in the drink, it’s only about $350. Not as bad as some of the other high-end models!
Thanks again. It’s small too, which helps keeps storage to a minimum not only on the kayak, but in our camper as well. I’m an RC Air nut but haven’t gotten a drone yet. At first they seemed too easy to fly, but I’ve come to realize they are a video/camera platform, flying is automated so you can literally focus on the imaging. Your use here is a good idea. We’ve done a few rivers that had downed trees blocking portions. Knowing that you have to portage or change course ahead of time is a more a matter of safety than convenience when you factor in the problem of getting caught on a tree in a river current. My wife’s kayak rolled and she and the kayak went under a downed tree a few years back. I got stuck trying to get to her and took on enough water to effectively sink me far enough to pass under the tree. I’d be happy to never have that happen again.
Yes, even lakes have islands, Lol. I wish the lakes in North Texas Had more islands in them. They are not that common in North Texas. Up northeast in Arkansas, tons of islands in their lakes!

Wolf island is packed with scorpions. The bass boats tend to get too close too.
Yes, I’ve seen a bunch of scorpions come out of the firewood I gather on the island. Love the place though...

What type of permits are required to camp there
Hello Melinda, none that I’m aware of......I have camped there pretty much by myself for the last 20 years.
How long did it take you to paddle to the island?
For me, it’s about a 30 - 45 minute paddle to the island. I am in good shape, but by no means an Olympic paddler.
