    Kiryu and Geralt are basically guys who are a year away from retirement and are trying to avoid getting any more work assigned to them before they can finally leave. But Snake literally almost collapses after a 5 foot drop from a helicopter, its sad because this is same guy you've seen take a leap off a bridge several stories down onto a sea vessel and be relatively unphased by it. Kratos' loss of power has nothing to do with his age, but his departure from Greece as freya said, theres no tragic imminence of death, no withering flame that once kept the entire world alight still stubbornly flickering in its final moments.

    Fire Emblem has a good showing of old men and women in its cast, if we're counting playable units in RPGs. The original Jagen is a guy who's whole deal is being a famous knight who's gotten super old, so he starts out stronger than the rest of your party to start with but all the young un's with high potential go on to outclass him. Marcus has a fun thing of being both dad-old and grandpa-old depending on which game he's in, and you also have characters like Niime and Lindon, who are really strong magic-users but are especially frail due to their age. Not to mention all boatload of elderly mages and priests in FE1 and 3. Everyone tends to point and laugh at all the literal child soldiers in Fire Emblem, but it's pretty full at the other end of the spectrum as well.

    A legit old man character is one that's 60+ and can't be too active at the risk of pulling something. Kratos and Geralt types don't count since they have their own forms of immortality that keep them in their 50's, even if they're starting to push it. It's easy to have an old character in any kind of game (mentors are a common route), but what Pat and Woolie kind of talked away from is what it takes to make one a main protagonist.

    This was one of the things I liked most about the Splinter Cell games pre-Conviction, because they're always going on and on about how slow and how much of an old fuck Sam Fisher is. They even show it in the gameplay because he never does any unreasonable dramatic physical movements that an aging former SEAL would be incapable of, and when combat/interrogations do occur, Sam always takes the most efficient, least physically demanding route to completing the task at hand (this especially is shown in the interrogations, in which he relies more on being psychologically intimidating than he does on physical force, which kind of got ruined with Conviction and Blacklist, but that's a separate rant I won't go into).

      Ezio in revelations arguably counts, it's definitely how the story wants him to be perceived but the fact that they didn't want to meaningfully change the gameplay really undermined it. He can't do a bunch of his old moves, that's fine we'll just give him the hook blade and now he can do them even better than the previous games. He's a tired old man but he needs to have kids for the story to make sense so here's a cute romantic subplot. The combat is easier than ever so he can still kill 100 guards by mashing Square. It's honestly a shame, that game would stand out a lot better if they leaned into the idea that he's weaker now and has to focus more on stealth and avoiding combat. but all we got was a slightly nerfed eagle vision.

    • @CaptainGCN
      @CaptainGCN ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I feel like this doesn't actually answer the spirit of the question, though, because the game doesn't actually tell stories, the stories are emergent and largely exist in the player's perception... and also, the older sims don't actually play appreciably differently to any other adult sim.

      @@CaptainGCN Same reason I wouldn't count most RPGs where you can slap a wrinkle filter over your character's face. Like, yeah, the option's there, but rpg stories tend to assume the player character is young-ish. Old enough to have some skills, but young enough to still be discovering the world and extent of their own abilities.
      That's kind of the reason why old people don't tend to be protagonists, but mentors or spirit guides or whatever; because one tends to assume the old guys already had their character arc.

    Frieren is literally about this but imo, the reason they use young looking people is simply because they are more body-able in a believeable fashion. The elderly, even in fantastical settings, are understandably too old to fight and thus the conflicts become more abstract and limiting. I know MGS4 exists but i dont think its the proof that makes other descision inexcusable

    I think there are a lot of potential games like this in combat heavy generes. And specifically in a semi-stealth games like Metro series. There is a great deal of cinema out there about "old dogs" - old men, way past their prime, doesn't have speed of a young self, but they have dedication and ferocity of old, will power. I can see a game where you go clear up a camp of bandits who stole some stuff from a local village and then have a respite amongst people, patting children on the head, drinking with young folks and stuff. And most importantly it's one game you can make about self sacrifice and not make it stupid. An old man solo fighting overwhelming forces, just to let others escape is a very big trope in media.
    The trick here is to make gameplay suitable for the character of this age and not make him jumping over walls and stuff.

    I think old women are like a million times more rare than old men. The only ones that come to mind are Wynne from Dragon Age, a unit from that DS Valkyrie Profile game whose name I don't know and Ana from Overwatch (don't worry though, she came with a younger, sexier optional skin on release!).
    The thing is that old people, specially in fantasy settings, are usually just there as a stepping stone for the younger characters to go over. Narratives are never about the things old people go through from their point of view. I expect that, as developers and gamers get older, games willing to take that narrative and run with it are going to pop up more frequently.

      I think the sad problem with representation of old women in media when it comes to Japan at least has to do with not being comfortable to depict women above 25, as to them, those are your golden years and you should get married before that (cause you're apparently not attractive afterwards for some reason according to the culture there.)
      It's part of a societal term called Christmas Cake if I remember right. Rather screwed up perspective to say the least.

    Old Snake actively dying of old age throughout MGS4 will never not be interesting, but what's more interesting to me is that i guess Solid has rapidly aged to the point of being older than Big Boss because he got absolutely bodied by what is supposed to be an 80-90 year old man who was also supposed to be dead like it was nothing.

I wish it was like he can barely bend forward and that now whenever he gets into conflict he has to use problem solving skills instead of fighting skills to get out of the situation. The only game I know of where you can play as the old, and it has no real effect on gameplay, other than them dying, is Three Kingdom games. I once got Cao Cao to live 4 years beyond his death in 220, by keeping him in the capital and away from war and disease, I treated him like a fragile piece of porcelain (that is a Chinese pun, I'm allowed to make them, we get a pass for our own puns), but he's not telling stories about putting down the Yellow Turban Rebellion or whatever. But then again, kids die young in that game too, like "whoops, they got the plague, sorry about that."
    The disease part that was brought up by Woolie, I kinda wish gamed that. Pat mention his limp when he sleeps on his leg wrong, I have a permanent one because Crohn's disease destroyed my ankle. I would LOVE a game where the character is sick proper and it's a gameplay mechanic. Even asthma, and you gotta rush for your inhaler, that would be anxiety producing. Wait...it's be like durability in BotW....might not be fun.
