I'm a +1 handicap and playing ZX4 mkii set with weaker loft, 7 iron 31° instead of 28.5. I never thought I would play that kind of irons but man they're so good. It makes my golf so much easier, I don't understand why scratch golfer snob game improvement irons...
I agree, I want to use the most forgiving irons possible whilst maintaining good back to front distance control. I’ve never understood golfers who’re in a race to get blades! Do you feel you feel you have a tight distance dispersion? Also, what’s your 7 iron club speed?
@@garymartingolfMark crossfield another TH-cam club tester uses the zxi4 irons full set, like it was said just adjust the lofts to suit your swing speed and you've got a really good set of irons that are easy to hit
@@garymartingolf I had ZX7 first gen prior to the ZX4. On perfect strike the ZX7 front to back dispersion is a bit tighter but my percentage of green in regulation is better with the ZX4. We lose some feeling and sex appeal at address but the gain in forgiveness is huge. I don't remember my swing speed with 7 iron but I'm 103/105mph with driver so it should be around 85-90mph. The only downside with these irons is the jacked loft... If you have slower swing speed, peak height and spin could be a problem as Sam stated in the video!
I'm turning 60 this year. I still play a traditional forged mb 7 iron 35°. I still have decent carry 174. But i want something much more forgiving would you think a zx5 would be a good option
I’ve got the mkii combo set I play zx4 4 iron 2 weak, zx5 5&6 1 weak, zx7 stranded loft 7&8, and z forged 2 9&pw and it’s the best full set up I’ve had it had forgiveness and control in the perfect parts of the bag it’s a wild combo but man does it work
It’s nothing we haven’t all done! Biggest mistake I ever made was getting bored of titleist AP2’s, I’d be in titleist T100 now if I’d not got bored. ZX5 are gorgeous 🤤
As i said yesterday, Maxfli A10 Tour, the original combo set, 3,4 5, cavity, 6 and 7 Muscle-backs and 8-PW in blades, now £100 will out perform these clubs.
I think the wider sole of the zx5 is not agreeing with the turf . It’s probably affecting strike slightly enough to kill the ball speed. I’m seriously considering splitting zxi U / zx5 6/ zx7 7-9 then into wedges for down south. I use the zf mkii forged up in NY cause the turf is so tight I like the sole geometry better.
I think you’ve hit the nail on the head. I always have this issue, it was the same when I had a PXG fit, the slightly larger profiles appeal to me, but the smaller profiles improve my strike. Have you tried the ZX5 and and ZX7? The question is where to split! I would do the same, however, I’m not sure if I’d sneak a ZX7 6, and then go 5 and 4 in ZX5.
@ you gotta look at the gaps. In general the 7 is a little faster than the blade and the 5 is faster than the 7. My zx5 6 iron is a 205 yard club , at 26* . My last set I split at 7/8 and that worked perfect but I had to weaken the zx5s a degree which is fine I usually bend the offset out anyways. If you go util 67/ 89 then you can carry 4 wedges and 7 wood/ hybrid too. I shoot for 15 yards in between clubs . I put axiom 125 in this year and it’s the best iron shaft I’ve ever played.
If I had to answer that in short, id say the srixon, however, the PXG 0317T are the very best performing iron I’ve ever had, so I’d have to try a 4,7,9 iron head to head outdoors to really give you a firm answer. From my initial testing though, the feel of the sxi7 were so soft, and the strike felt so pure, they’re were surprisingly easy to hit than I would have thought.
With the ZX I 4 the dispersion front to back is massive 20 yds + in some cases that’s like being short or through the back of the green, this is one of the problems I have with my Mizuno JPX 923 forged I get a few that are going by Airmail every round, that’s why I think I’m going into the new S 3 cavity back irons, also I don’t like the offset also they will be more workable I just find that the JPX you try and work them and very little happens because of the forgiveness built in so I try and add a little more then it goes sharp left or right!! I’ve always been able to set up and think Draw or fade and it more or less just happens with my swing path and a touch of manipulation, if I want to sling it around a corner the yes I used to set the face and my stance more, but normally just think about it and it happens! They look beautiful heads Garry, great review!
It is always the worry when you try to play a cavity for forgiveness because it’s forged. This really can be helped though if you get a good fitter to get you optimal spin and decent angle, one of the things that I’ve only just learnt more about. I think the best most forgiving forged I’ve found for good back to front desperation was the mizuno 243 forged and the Titleist T100.
I am currently playing the Titleist AP3. Would love to try out the zx4 and zx5. I am looking at trying out the Mizuno jpx925 hot metal and the hot metal pro v the srixon zx4 and zx5.
🎉I think zxi5 is not a fully forged and the 4 is definitely not, I couldn't get the previous model, 2 models back, it was just after covid with transport delays in shipping, 3 month wait, I trailed it in the 7 iron loved the feel and dispersion was fantastic, I bought mizuno 921 hotmetal and they have been very consistent, but just about ready to shout myself a new set, and srixon are on the list
Had a fitting at PXG fir Gen 6 about 6 months ago - persisted with them and then got rid - awful - up for a new set these look brilliant especially the X7 - probably get the X5 (maybe) in the 6 & 5 - sane shaft as well they never balloon - nice one Gary ?
That’s a surprise! You’re not close enough to sam for him to have a look at your gen 6 are you? I’m sure he could tell you why they’re not working, something must be wrong.
Was wanting to try the ZX5 mk2 when I got my D9 Forged, but couldn't get a fitting for them here at that time, I will be looking and testing these new ZXi5 irons soon. The V-sole interest's me 🏌️
I’ve never had anything within my network to try them either. I was a bit admirer of the last generation too. I can’t say I felt the V sole specifically, all I can say is I was pleasantly pleased with my strike, probably more often than usual lol

Because most weekend golfers and hackers have no idea wth those numbers would mean. I'm tired of people saying this.. That would be an utterly disaster for the big brand companies. Buy Hogan ...
@TreyEb3rt if it's ts 31 that's not considered strong nowadays. My epic forged is 27° and the best iron i ever hit out of the 40 sets I've played. Stops on a dime on the green.

did you make adjustments on the lofts?
@cbisjr no. 24,27,31 on ZX5/ 36 41 46 on ZX7. They are gapping good
Another informative show, must admit they do look nice, lofts to strong for me though, did I miss how much they cost, keep them coming mate.
Zx7 mk2 5 to PW and popped the Zx5 4 iron in with them. Truly outstanding irons and should get more love in my opinion.
Would you do the same combo again? Or do it differently?
@ I would go 6 and 5 in the zx5 but there is very little difference in my opinion
Great review. Quality clubs.
