Zeus is a powerful God with most of his ability revolving around combat and raw strength.
Athena's powers were overwhelmingly geared towards other things, such as hyper intelligence, warfare TACTICS, craft skills ETC. I'm sure she had plenty more power than, say, a mortal. But compared to Zeus or even Ares she was probably weak as fuck.
Gotta remember, Gods have very unique, often super specialised, powers in God of War lore.

SpencerFcp, real Greek mythology is exactly the same as this when it comes to prophecy, the person goes to the oracle, learns of their death (or something like that), tries to prevent it from happening, only to ultimately cause the prophecy to be completed. I believe that the term for that kind of prophecy is "self-fulfilling prophecy."
If you have seen god of war ghost of sparta you would already know that olympians have been trying their whole life to prevent their deaths, while cronos ate babies ares and athena were sent to get the marked warrior that was supposed to be kratos and ares even tried to kill him after he tried to fight, a little peace kind in athena regreted that and kratos lived to this day, zeus killed and cursed his mother as well kratos sees his mother dying in his hand in ghost of sparta because he had no choice but to fight her, so ares took kratos little brother to god of death thanatos, and thanatos kept torturing him in the domein of death, because they thought the prophecy is that demios is the one to bring destruction upon them, taking helpless child into the domein of death is even worse than just swallowing them

The interesting thing about Kratos’ rage when he was younger was the fact that his actions, anger, hunger for vengeance and power always had harmed those he came to respect, loved, or saw as his friends.

Cronos ate both Hades and Poseidon, with Zeus freeing them both, while in a sense Cronos still lived, until Kratos killed him. Zeus killed Kratos, which is the very reason Kratos sought to kill Zeus. In this case, neither Zeus nor Cronos wanted to take responsibility for their actions, but still payed the price for them. Though I hope that Kratos really does end this cycle with Atreus in God of War (2018) and onward, depending on how the franchise with Norse Mythology plays out.

what i absolutely love about this scene is that it uses the concept of irony perfectly. i am kind of blown away how great this is. let me explain.
so, basically, at the very beginning of GOW 2, zeus betrays kratos and makes him lose his "gigantic form", makes him smaller and therefore weaker. based on the argument kratos had with athena right before the said incident, kratos rightfully assumes that athena snapped on kratos and it was her who opposed him. in response, kratos shouts "athena, you will suffer for this". of course, later it is revealed that zeus was behind all of this and kratos' rage towards athena was misplaced. similarly, in the end, when kratos is fighting zeus, he has no intention to harm athena at all, he is not even thinking about her, but athena suddenly shows up to protect zeus and kratos accidentaly kills her instead.
the point is, that kratos mistakingly threatened athena in the beginning, vowing that she would suffer, and in the end, he accidentally fulfilled his promise. it is so ironic because though kratos was mistaken when he swore revenge against athena and he also made a mistake when he killed her. i absolutely adore this kind of writing. so amazing.
The CGI scenes in this game still impress me with how beautiful they are
