I didn't go looking for a Jeep, but when I found a 2004 in my price range I figured if I could handle one as a nervous sixteen year old in Driver's Ed, I can handle one as a grownup.

Thank you for the kind comment. In general, the ZJ/ZG is a very reliable car. *If* it's well maintained and replacement parts from reputable manufacturers have been used. As with any older car it is just necessary that some parts need to be replaced due to age, if you do it early enough and are aware that there is always something to do, it is a really enjoyable car. Esspecially on longer journeys. It is very comfortable and the V8 rubble is great. Sadly there are only very few well maintained examples with little rust on the marked. And if, then they are usually sold really quick. Pajeros are certainly also nice vehicles and with good maintenance certainly also very reliable. But they are very different from a ZJ/ZG Unfortunately I haven't seen a L040 or V20 for a long time. I am guess the main reason (especially with the L040) is due to rust.

Yes, this is really the average Fuel consumption of the car. (With original sized tires the Display its quite accurate.) Original sized wheels, no lift and regular maintenance. And this car gets hardly ever used for short distance or city driving. 90% Highway driving and B road cruising. A few trips to town and the average is rises.

I actually have a ZJ in my living room. But it's a 1:24 scale model. The 1:1 car gets driven. A few weeks ago it was on a 2,000 km camping trip on Corsica. In total the car has been Kilometer-wise about 4.5times around the world. But apparently the owners have taken good care of the car over the past decades.

@Thomas J. I had to search quite a long time for this car. During this time I also looked at some examples in really desolate condition. So I'm more than happy that I found this example. Although the overall condition was good, I have installed quite a few new parts, aside from basic and preventative maintenance. LPG is not an option in Austria. With LPG it is not allowed to park in underground garages and there are only very few gas stations that even offer it. But I must also say that I do not know where I would even place an LPG tank in a ZJ/ZG. And I also do not like the look of an LPG System in the engine compartment. I wish you good luck on your serach for a nice ZJ/ZG. At least the body condition (rust-wise) of the car should be better in spain.👍

У меня есть ZJ, 4L,1993, Loredo, в приличном состоянии, покупал в США, на аукционе, я второй хозяин, ездил один, никогда не насиловал её... Всё функционирует как и положено... Могу продать...
@@Fredward_K ich habe auch selber einen Jeep Grand Cherokee ZJ von 1996, mit dem gleichen 5.2 Liter V8 Motor, den mein Vater von einem Freund aus Deutschland gekauft hat, und dieser hat ihn von irgendeiner Grenzpolizei aus Deutschland genommen in 2016, keine Ahnung mehr von welcher, und fuhr mit dem während paar Monate bis er dann bemerkte dass er Probleme mit dem Simmerring hatte, also wir dachten das auch und er hat meinen Vater gefragt ob er das wechseln konnte und er meinte ja, aber hatte nie Zeit und das Auto stand neben unserer Garage 6 Jahre lang. Letzten Sommer haben wir ihn gekauft und sind dabei ihn zu reparieren, er war der neunte Besitzer und das Auto hat gerade mal 229.000 Kilometer auf dem Tacho, plus hatte das Auto auch einen Sequentiellen LPG Tank von 90 Liter im Kofferraum, und jetzt ist das Problem, dass das Auto nicht anspringen will, da er die alten Schlüssel nicht wiederfindet und wir haben den zündschloss gewechselt und dabei Zündschlüssel bekommen und als wir versucht haben ihn anzuschalten, ging er für 2 Sekunden an und ist von alleine ausgegangen, und am Armaturenbrett erleuchtete auf einmal ein rotes Licht was immer blinkte, also die Wegfahrsperre war aktiviert und wir haben alles probiert um das zu deaktivieren und das Auto anzuschalten, aber was wir auf TH-cam sahen haben wir nachgemacht und nix hat geklappt und deshalb muss das Auto zum Jeep Händler damit sie es regeln. Vom Rost her gibt es echt wenig zu sehen, nur an den vorderen Kotflügel ein bisschen und an der Motorhaube, das Fahrwerk aber ist verschont und wie neu. Der Interieur ist auch extrem schön mit diesen schwarzen Ledersitzen und ich hoffe wir kriegen ihn gleich an und dass ich mit dem bisschen durchfahren kann😍
It took a long time and a lot of effort to find this exact example. And in addition to that I still did a lot of wrenching to bring it to this showebn state. (I considered to do a more in depth Vid with explanations since I already did more work to it) Unfortunately the majority of ZJ/ZG in Europe are also rusted out and neglected. :(
@Fredward_K I appreciate the response! A majority of the videos I see of well kept ZJs are from Europe and sometimes even Russia. A lot of Cherokees from Asia, Europe as well, and the southern America's. It's nearly 50/50. Maybe it's because the communities in Europe are so few and far between for vehicles like that that there is extra effort put in to showcase them to more people. Or perhaps the folks like you across the pond just appreciate that kind of engineering architecture more, lol. It's very interesting though!

No, I really meant ZG. This GC was not built in Jefferson but in Graz (Austria). For example, a ZG has, in contrast to the ZJ, side indicators in the fenders and reflectors in the rear bumper. And some other details are different. Manly for the european Market.
@@omcdm Hi Can, If the previous owner did not flush the coolant regularly, and or used cheap coolang it will have turned into a brown rusty sludge over the years. This reduces the heating capacity of the heat exchanger and the cooling capacity of the water cooler. The water cooler also loses cooling capacity simply due to its age. In really bad and negleted cases the water pump impeller could rust away -> no water flow at all... Open the radiator cap to look for potential brown old coolant. And look in the reservour tank if there is excessive sludge build up. If this looks goot and the oner did the maintanance. But If the cooling system has not yet been overhauled, you should do this sooner rather than later after purchase -> -New radiator -New water pump (including new screws) -New thermostat (possibly with housing) -New radiator hoses. Pay attention to the spiral in the lower radiator hose (and transfer this part to the new radiator hose) otherwise the hose will contract when cooling down. Use only well-known Brands (Gates,Airtex,OSC...). No NoName Stuff. And never anything from Crown Automotiv. Fill the cooling system with 5050 Mopar MS-9769 and low-lime water. Maybe use a cleaner before that and flush the system with clear water against the flow direction. And to protect your automatic transmission, you should definitely remove the oil lines of the automatic transmission from the radiator. Also If you installed a new radiator. If coolant gets into the oil circuit of the transmission due to a defect, you will have to overhaul the transmission (or have it overhauled). Maybe you get away with flusing. But the clutch packs have certainly suffered very high wear due to the water. But if there is coolant in the transmission and you notice slipping while driving you can be sure that it is broken. If the Jeep has the tow package, you can replace the tiny factory oil cooler at the very front of the cooling package with a slightly larger one. And if it does not have a tow package, it would make even more sense to install a transmission oil cooler. A lower temperature level of the oil increases the life of the transmission A deeper automatic transmisson oil pan is therefore also be advisable. If it is an earyler model with the smooth style pan not the groved stile one on the later models. DORMAN 265839 holds 1L more than the smooth original version. However, instead of the yellow felt filter you should use the filter in the metall plastic housing, that was used on the later models and the 5.9 with 46RE. Another positiv point, this oil pan also has an oil drain plug. This will come in very handy at the next service at the latest.
