I watched a video recently where someone implemented small dams along a stream in a dry location. Not enough to completely stop up the streams, but enough to slow the water. It ended up turning the area into a fertile growing area and it greened up. Maybe build little dams instead of just letting the waters flow to encourage the water to soak in?
thanks for this watch. Glad to see someone else playing in the water. I'm in by the stove now but I've been doing the water guiding here too...far northern CA...runnoff from Lassen
You mentioned keeping more water for the Sumer. Have you considered small damns aka “one rock damns” in some of the wider areas of small creeks? While they won’t hold water alll summer they will create moist areas that stay damp longer into the summer than if the water simply runs off.
I wouldn't say pointless...I appreciate the follow up on all the prep work you did before the rains hit. Shows the difference that makes! Plus nothing to be ashamed of, as it IS fun to play in the water!
Takes me back. I spent many hour as a child "playing" in the water. Irrigating a backyard orchard. Educating the water getting it to go where I wanted, educated me. That's one reason I became a civil engineer.
Make a few depressions in some of your drainages to hold water into the summer? I've seen it done to help water retention on pasture and forest lands. Possibly another reason to play in the woods!
Build a lake? Or pond? To store runoff water if you can find a spot? Yep, your place is a bit on the wet side just like we are up here towards the Canadian border. And this was a fun video about the forest and did notice a few trees that had blown over in a few spots. Maybe they can go visit the mill?
I understand the concept of playing in the water. I've been doing it since childhood. Usually it happens in the Spring when the snow melts. Thanks for the video!
If I’m going solo, I play in the water just like you do, fact is I was doing it just today. When my grandkids are around, we really have fun! Puddle stomping and getting each other drenched is a blast.
Enjoyed the playing in the rain. There’s no doubt splashing around in the rain beats running for your life from wild fire. Have a merry new year; looking forward to your next offering. - cletus the slack jawed yokel, Blue mtns.
I play in the water too. Rain starts down my driveway and I make little ditches and dams. A neighbor helps by filling in the ditches and letting the water from his place run down the road...
Your video cracks me up because I do the exact same thing on my ranch. In fact I was just out doing this today. We must live in the same part of the country!
Thanks for the walk in the woods! Felt like I was there! I love playing in the water, controlling it, shunting it off in another direction. Here’s a description for ye: Ephemeral pools. Translation: a natural breeder reactor for the moss-quito!
Greetings from a similar forest environment, but down under. The Aussie poet Dorothea Mackellar a long time ago wrote the lines: Of droughts and flooding rains. You probably know the feeling? Culverts just work, but then wasn't your video all about systems working in extreme weather? Cheers. Chris
I was definitely not disappointed! And you should've titled the video "me playing in the water". I would've stopped watching the previous video and jumped right into this one. Now I finished that video first. There's absolutely no shame playing in the water. I would've done the exact same!
It is amazing how heavy the leaves and pine needles get. At least when they get waterlogged. At least you are not doing it in the rain. I find myself doing it in the rain, especially when the landowners are not maintaining the access road.
I lived most of my life on flat land so I never gave the clear water vs cloudy water much thought. But now I live in the mountains. I always learn something from your videos, 3ven your second most pointless video. 😂
ponds and check dams all the way down that mountain Push all the leaves upstream from your "beaver" dams It was fun to watch no matter where the video went 🙂
reminds me of when I was young visiting my grandfather's house. he made water channels out of boards to put in his driveway. I might go out and play in the water, but I'm barely recovered from the crud. so I'm being a god boy and not unduly stressing my body.
Aah! The joy of doing something pointless, just because you can. Thus relieving the question of, was my earlier work on the road pointless? Of course the point of pointlessnous is to point out how pointless it is! 😂 hmmm...Michael playing in the water with a shovel. Give the man points for being pointless and yet making some great points. 😅
I love these road repair videos. The property i grew up on had a long gravel driveway. It was a weekly thing in wet weather to repair it using shovels and sloshing around in rubber boots.
I would still push more leaf matter up against those BDA's to make them pond up the water. Grabbing sediment is good, but BDA's are just as much about creating habitat and storing water through the long, dry parts of the year. Seeing how fast and easy the water passes through tells me the gaps between the branches are just too big. Without finer material plugging them, the water can't slow down and what sediment it's carrying can't drop out of solution to deposit on the channel floor.
I wonder if you could build a pond with the bulldozer to store some of that water for the summer? Though that would only keep a very small area immediately around it watered.
Not sure if sarcasm when "If only there were some way..." In case not, construct some terraces or the like to catch water and slow it down better to soak into the gound over weeks?
My two young grandsons love playing in puddles. Most of my playing in water has been trying to reverse what the real beaver dams are trying to accomplish
The point might be, with all the duff and needles on the forest floor, the water is self filtering and your management is working. Any place for ponds or swales to catch and hold the water??It might give you an excuse to play with that D6!
I'm with you, 61 years old and still like playing in the water, good video sir.
Finally, something to take the edge off of all of that dry humor.
+++
Yep. Wet humor is always preferred…
I think this is my new favorite guy on the internet. He’s funny, informative, and I can relate to him keep it up I love you videos.

These pointless videos are some of the most fun!
Jeez that stream had head of steam!
I loved playing “redirect the water” when I was a wee lad. Now I’m retired and not much has changed.
Lucky us!

The continuity of your vocal volume and tone from cut to cut is a real achievement

Hydro-Directional therapy.
hehehehe
You can charge a lot more for HDT than you can for just 'playing in the water'. Good move!
Thoroughly entertaining

Thank you Michael. Happy New Year from New Hampshire!!

What a funny looking beaver
As one of the two or three, we appreciate you too, sir. Keep em coming.
You know very well how an ecosystem works.
In Greece we have the same weather patterns especially in the West coast (west of pindus mountains)
Enjoyed the playing in the rain. There’s no doubt splashing around in the rain beats running for your life from wild fire. Have a merry new year; looking forward to your next offering.

You captured me with “Orographic Lift”….. good job!!!

Just being out in the woods is the Point! That is always better than being indoors!🤠
Something calming about watching videos like this.
Greetings from a similar forest environment, but down under. The Aussie poet Dorothea Mackellar a long time ago wrote the lines: Of droughts and flooding rains. You probably know the feeling? Culverts just work, but then wasn't your video all about systems working in extreme weather? Cheers. Chris
If only there was a way to store this water,Dam Ive got an idea 😅. Another great video thanks. Keep them coming.
I grew up on a semi-arid prairie. Average yearly moisture, counting the moisture in snow, 5-7 inches. I could watch water running all day long 😅.
I was definitely not disappointed! And you should've titled the video "me playing in the water". I would've stopped watching the previous video and jumped right into this one. Now I finished that video first. There's absolutely no shame playing in the water. I would've done the exact same!
Interesting seeing how green everything is there. No real winter to speak of, only a rainy season
Kiddy Wilson playing in the water.
Always funny, playful, with smart talks.
Like that.
Hé Wilson, may 2025 be good to you😊😊😊
I like your vids, you are funny Sir. Cheers from Poland from me and my small Powermat 12" chainsaw.

Nothing wrong with videos like this. I liked it. 😁
I enjoyed the video, I don't much care for drama, too much of that already, more please
I feel your pain. I have to do the same thing multiple times a year.
You did good video thanks for your effort❤
I liked your video. I'm doing the same thing you are here in Northern California, trying to keep all the water off the roads.
We had a gully washer rain last night here in East Tennessee as well and I played in the water as well
Love your content sir .. broke my old phone from a pine removal here in Canada ..I'm glad I found you be safe thank you 😊
Informative and entertaining as always!!! I wouldn't exactly call it the 2nd most pointless video ever.
Being Dutch, I always enjoy some watermanagement, especially in this beautiful scenery
ponds and check dams all the way down that mountain
Push all the leaves upstream from your "beaver" dams
It was fun to watch no matter where the video went 🙂
I’d rather deal with running water than forest fires…carry on!
Who doesn’t like watching a good runoff video. 🤣🤣🤣
Nice video. Happy New Year.
Small scale hydro electric in the Creek? playing with purpose ;-)
Not disappointed, friend. I love playing in the water too.
reminds me of when I was young visiting my grandfather's house. he made water channels out of boards to put in his driveway. I might go out and play in the water, but I'm barely recovered from the crud. so I'm being a god boy and not unduly stressing my body.
It's fun to make water go places you want.
As a woodlot owner in the NEK I am in sync with this ritual.
And your video earned a sub because I love the forest ecology stuff but most of all I miss playing in water like what you are doing
Aah! The joy of doing something pointless, just because you can. Thus relieving the question of, was my earlier work on the road pointless? From Phoenix here, lucky you, I guess to have all that nice water. Too bad it couldn't run our way
Some people just don't get it. Next you should make a video on taking naps in the woods. Not even kidding.
What a BUST! Just kidding. I loved it because I'm doing the same on my Vanc Island property. LOL
ah perhaps a water wheel in that big creek to supplement the solar on wet days!
It looks like the fire danger is fairly low now, 😊.
Reminds me of Florida. With hills!
4:28 you said there’s the real creek and we saw two old short concrete walls…barriers of some sort…who would have put those in and for what purpose?
63 here, still playing with water at every opportunity!
You could increase water storage on the land by making contour swales like they did in western India.
Wilson sits at home.
“Storms a coming. I better check my roads!”
How fun!
Humm, the whole world likes playing in the water. 😊

I would do exactly the same thing in a place like this. I also can't help but think about the possibility of installing a micro hydroelectric plant.
Sir you are the Bobby bocher of water bars 👍
This might be my favorite video so far!
Looks fun
Where is it your playing in the water😊what mountain?
Water management is never ending
Take a bow . It rare enough to see an honest person lately.
"Playing in the water." Sounds like an excellent day to me.
All is well. Remain Calm.
You’re the stream whisperer Michael.
Tonight, on "The Culvert Report"...
I have always loved playing in the water, drove my mom nuts.. barefoot in the rain in the mud puddles. Still playing in the water now.😊
Thanks for pointing out another example of the Global Climate Crisis.
I wonder if you could build a pond with the bulldozer to store some of that water for the summer? Though that would only keep a very small area immediately around it watered.
Everyone loves playing in the water, especially flowing water.
Busy beaver! 😀
Dry humor. See what I did there?
If you can map out and record how these flows are running I guess you have a head start on retaining some of this rainfall within the forestry.
Playing in the water and calling it work? Call me up next time, I'd be happy to help. And I'm not far away. I'm just north of you a bit.
hahahah any excuse to go play in the water, we all do it and it is fun.
🤪👍😁. Great fun!
Wilson Goes With The Flow!
I miss land like that.
Not sure if sarcasm when "If only there were some way..."

More more more pointless rainy videos please, were drying up here in Arizona
I like it. That's as pointless a response as I can muster.
playing in the water is always fun
