In the future, perhaps take Hope to NEw Yolk City with you? With regard to Hope having a Mom that would stick up for her. But, sadly, Hope was abandoned by Tilly, so Hope hasn’t had anyone, except you and DaNell. And a myriad of well wishers. Btw, I automatically thumbs up when i see your videos.
Doris still made sure the others didn't abuse her. Harvey and Fawn also made sure she was safe. Al's goats will warm up to her once they get used to her. They might be a little jealous of the attention she's getting and she's low in the pecking order.
Hi Al and family. When I have to introduce new animals to each other I bring them together and give treats. That way they associate good stuff to the new one. It works pretty well. :) Good luck!
Hope certainly has someone to protect her. She is such a sweetheart, she doesn’t give in, she just stays right there!! She is a strong little girl! I love your videos!
Sometimes that's the way it goes. We just make the best of it. And the rope has ice on the end because being absorbent it is soaked and wicking towards the end because it is hanging down. As the water drops form on the end they freeze because it is so cold out. The rope is still wicking water so the icicle is getting longer, drip by drip since the previous drips aren't falling off. I think.
Al its the Air that cools the rope completely vs the ground. This is the same reason that bridge decks freeze first due to the airflow above and below. Love the video's sir. Keep them coming. Love your passion and opportunity you have.
Agree with Genevieve and Matthew. An additional factor besides vapor freeze, and air vs. ground temps, is color. Darker colors like the ground and green roofing will attract more UV (heat) compared to the white rope - even on cloudy days!
It’s a lot of coordination for you so I can drink my morning coffee and watch your homestead. I really look forward to watching so thanks for your hard work💕
Fairy egg sounds better than fart egg. I've had three this year. They are a novelty and they were complete with a tiny yolk! Have a nice weekend with your family. God bless you.
I love following you around for your rounds and family time. Farmers are hard workers with a lot of self discipline. I admire your work ethics. Patty in Seattle
Agnes Takacs I have a broody hen too! She even stays sometimes after I take the eggs! I don’t have a rooster so there’s no point in letting her hatch some :)
Goats are just like dogs and cats ,they too do not get along with each other all the time either! Some of our cats got along with our dogs ,sometimes not, sometime cats are also the way! Then some dogs do not get along with other dogs and the same with cats!
I pray those young ladies can start to accept little Hope, it literally breaks my heart each time one of them head butts her....She is the sweetest little thing, always happy and always determined to get on with things...again thank you for the wonderful care you are taking of her :)
@Olivia I know and understand how you feel, its just a difficult set of circumstances, the cold not helping, for if it were warmer, she could be out without her hoodie and run in the pen and at least try to move away from the trio of adult goats when they were on the attack. My heart breaks too, I want to so protect her, I was heartbroken when she was born, heartbroken when her mum did not look after her, heartbroken when she had to steal nourishment from other mothers, and severely HEARTBROKEN when the Weed em family decided to give her up. Hope is a real fighter, she has come this far and it is not in vain hon, life is cruel at times, we need to place our trust in that the snow will melt, and Hope will better be able to assimilate with the group. If not it would be best for Al to purchase another few goats aged the same as Hope and put them in a pen together, that way she will have friends and not feel lonely. I pray for the best outcome for our little darling Hope, she deserves the world for all her struggles...sending you hugs
Your weather just won’t give way to spring will it? Hope you enjoyed your fairy egg Olivia and dreamt about running in your sandals and shorts instead of a warm scarf!
We too got a fairy egg! What a trip it was to find ..we are new to raising chickens(about 1 yr in), so we didn't expect that at all..Well, despite your unexpected weather and such, I still think you all had a productive day👍👍
You know I feel so sorry for little Hope. Bless her Heart. She was rejected by her mom and even the other two goats that she nursed off never really wanted. And now in her new home these goats are mean to her. No wonder she likes that human bonding because that is really the only love and acceptance she has ever known.
Hope's been growing...noticing her sweatshirt is getting tight around her middle now. Thought...maybe the girls don't like Hope's sweatshirt? Love Figaro

I don't know if others caught it but I heard geese flying over head while you worked on the PPM. They have been traveling north over my area in Nebraska. I guess a little spring snow doesn't stop the instinct to get to their breeding area. That nasty mean hen brought back memories of collecting eggs for my grandmother. I was 7 and took a whiffle bat with me for protection. LOL!!
Crazy weather, it was sunny and in the mid 70’s this week in SE PA. I think the sweatshirt on hope also differentiates her from the other to a certain degree, not saying taking it off would stop everything but would possibly help. Sending you warmer weather.....
So I’ve been all over the emotional roller coaster about Hope. Lol. We only have to go back and watch her journey in WM&R. So we feel exceptionally sorry for her. I think you are being very kind and respectful of Hope and her acclimation to your older girls. Not that I know a thing about goat life. But I’m pretty sure Hope will make her way fine. She’s a feisty gal. And you are such a kind gentle man. Thanks. Holy Moly, when will the snow end? We’re getting it too here in MN. But I’ve always been told that gardens love the April snow. Old wives tale, I’m sure. ❤️
Hey Al , going forward on your sustainability venture , something to consider is a pelletiser to make your own feed pellets for goats , chickens etc. , whenever you have too much produce or waste in the growing season , pelletize it for feed later . It's a value added product that keeps , if you end up with more than you need then you have a product to sell . I'd recommend looking into it , my old Dad has one . Good health and happiness to all :-)
I wonder if you could use dog shock collars on the bigger goats to train them to leave Hope alone? Loved the tiny egg! It looks like one of your younger chickens has started laying, more eggs!
Yes, and another factor to consider is the wind chill. That is, if a body (or location) is in a position where there is a flow of wind (or water) rushing by it, its heat is carried off. You know this instantly by putting clothes to dry by hanging them on a line to dry. WARNING: This is the danger of a body being in running water. That is the rushing of the water pulls the heat out of the person, or animal, and they find it hard to move.
Is there a reason why you haven't assumed the roll of Hope's Mama-goat ? I should think that if you bop them in the head, each time they are aggressive towards Hope, then they may get the message ? Not enough to hurt them but, enough, with the proper timing, to be understood ?
He's sort of hip-checking them sometimes. Maybe he should give 'en a knee right in the schnoz. I'll leave goat advice to those who actually keep goats though.
Yeah, I have seen what he has done so far. I just think that it may be engrained in their behavior to learn hierarchy with the specific emphasis through head butting. @@hughbrackett343
Good afternoon New Yolk City! I think Moose snuck in there and laid that little egg ~8^) I thought I heard that hen in NYC say "hey...let go of my eggo" AL .... she meant business heh heh. Boy oh boy .... Willow sure is cranky .... ouch! Take care Al, Gina & Olivia.
Your icy rope is because the rope acts as a wick and increases evaporation. Taking the latent heat of evaporation from the wick keeps the temperature a little lower - hence the water stays frozen! Also, the dirt and the roof are dark, so will absorb more heat, and stay warmer, than the white rope. So you have two factors in play.
For the ice on the rope, the surface of the rope provides extra surface area so any wind blowing by drops the temperature lower through evaporation. When that colder water drips down the rope, the air is cold enough to bring it the rest of the way to freezing. At least, that's the best I could come up with :)
I am so glad you protect Hope. I didn’t know the bigger goats would be hateful toward her. Poor baby lol. Would they kill hope if you didn’t protect her? It’s nice to see snow melting hopefully you won’t get more.
Your snow reminds me of the adjustment we made after we left Littleton to come to NYS, we gained a month of Spring. They say every 50 miles south adds a week of the next season. I think it's true.
The rope will hold more water in one place. Being in the open like it is allows for evaporation which cools things just the additional amount needed to freeze. Bedouins could sometimes make ice in the desert by encouraging evaporation during the cold nights.
Whenever I do a project, I usually buy extras of things like those unions, bulkhead fittings, etc. Just to keep around, in case they are out of them for the next project.
Loved seeing the chickens out of New Yolk City for the day! They know spring is here, but can't figure out what all that white stuff is still doing falling on them! LOL! Eyes on the Lord and all will be well. Blessings from Missouri!
Love your videos and thank you for all you out into it. Reminds me of the times I spent with my Dad growing up in the Adirondack Mtns of New York and working our small family farm
Sorry you had such a bad day Al . Sometimes when I had a day like that I just walked away from it for awhile and focused on my family and having fun . My brain would get over whelmed and then I didn"t seem to be able to do even the simplest thing . Take one day off just for you . Everything will still be there the next day and your mind with be clear and fresh . AND Hope will be fine . Lock the other three out of the barn and let her have a blast inside!
You are sooooo smart! I would definitely plan on taking the rain gutters off the PPM come fall. It will make snow removal off the roof soooo much easier! ❤🌅🌵

Freezing rope - the rope is full of air spaces (think 'pink insulation') . It retains the lower night time temps longer. The water sitting on the metal and wood surfaces do not have embedded air spaces so they respond to the rising temps faster.
If you have any pool stores in your area, they might a wide variety of pvc parts you could get. Especially pool companies that install thier own pools.
When we run to the store, it is once a week or less as it is a 70 mile trip. I really hate when they are missing several of the items you went all that way for.
Poor little Hope trying to be so friendly and the others don't want to except her, I wonder if they ever will? She's such a sweet little girl. Red chicken says don't you dare touch my eggs. Peck, Peck. Ouch. lol. Your worker at Lowes sounds like our workers at Lowes. Oh my goodness snowing again. Your chicks lay some beautiful eggs. Thanks for the video.
It's an anti-candle. The rope is acting like a wick, but forms ice because what it is wicking is cold, instead of heat. If it were laying up on the roof, it wouldn't do that. It is hanging out in the open, with exposure to the wind. And it is just cold enough for it to work that way.
Hi from UK 🇬🇧, love your videos especially with Hope! Are you aware that we in England 🏴 have to apply for permission to set up a barrel system off any type of roof to collect rain water, there’s a by-law that it must be fitted with a float, so when the barrel is full it directs the excess water into the drain? If we do not comply we are libel to be prosecuted! Unbelievable, no? As a retired heating and plumbing engineer there were many by-laws that had to be adhered!! Some rather stupid...... watching your videos fills me with joy that sanity still prevails out there beyond GB 🇬🇧. Keep well keep safe!!
I look forward to yall's videos. I think you should put bold "PPM" above the rain T on the wood. That would really make it official for the homestead! I bet your girls could design something awesome!
Great idea for the PPM waterer, but I wonder if the pigs will break the pvc pipe? I’m interested in how it works. 😀 Maybe reinforce it with a board clamp? I really enjoy watching how you prototype your ideas, and then looking at the results and seeing what can make it better! I am trying to adopt your attitude of “Its not a failure, it’s an opportunity for improvement.”
The rope is up in the open air and the water will freeze quickly there. It remains so because the other things are in contact with the earth or the building itself which are both much warmer. (Kind of like a bridge will freeze because it is up in the wind/air)
Look in to getting you an automatic pop door opener. You set the time to open and close. That way you won’t have to worry when you forget to close it. Great video👍🏻
Are you going to call the pig mobile new-ham-shire? I really want you to!!
I agree! I don't like PPM.
Jessie, eggcelent idea. Seems obvious, but it never occurred to me.
Jessie that is hilarious! It’s also perfect!
That's a perfect name, i love it! 🐖
Thank you all!!
I think you should make a door into hopes enclosure that is so small only she can get in if she needs to hide
Try leaving Willow inside, Hope outside and changing the girls out till someone adopts Hope into pack??!

Your winter goes on and on! Our spring lasts for days and days. I love a long spring. I especially like no real snow.
Still think letting hope outside alone with one other goat until they bond would help. I have read goats get injured when inegrating them new.

In New Yolk city that hen just wants to be a mommy. You can marked her eggs with a black marker, so you don't get them mixed up.

Hi Lumnah's. what ever happened to the composting worms in the greenhouse with the chickens? did they survive the winter?
You could leave Hopes gate open and make a fence with 2-3 bars coming down that she can fit through but not the adults, then she can have a safe space to retreat to but gets to come out when she wants to.

The rope has low density and not enough mass to retain enough heat to keep water from freezing. Everything else has a far greater density and much more mass to retain enough heat to keep water from freezing.

The ice freezes on the rope since it can't absorb as much heat as the ground and the roofing material.
Yes, and another factor to consider is the wind chill. That is, if a body (or location) is in a position where there is a flow of wind (or water) rushing by it, its heat is carried off. You know this instantly by putting clothes to dry by hanging them on a line to dry.

MEASURE TWICE CUT ONCE lol you know better, spring is coming we promise
You said what I was thinking. Ms. Olivia looked like a desert nomad!
David I blame it on Fawlty Towers and the dead Pigeon.
Phoenix Loiselle, lol 😂 believe it or not there’s a by-law that covers that!
😬Still looks cold and snowy. Hopefully spring hits you soon.
Thank you for confirming my plans to move to the Southeastern US.
Come join us in sunny NC www.joelreames.com
The rope is up in the open air and the water will freeze quickly there. It remains so because the other things are in contact with the earth or the building itself which are both much warmer. (Kind of like a bridge will freeze because it is up in the wind/air)
G'Morning Al..Gina..Olivia...Another good day with your animals maybe the chickens just want to be free and run outside...Have a great day!😊😊
Look in to getting you an automatic pop door opener. You set the time to open and close. That way you won’t have to worry when you forget to close it. Great video👍🏻
