alcohol is simply a drug and should be regulated the same as drugs. Should be available but the advertisement should be heavily censored like with tobacco.

It made sense before the modern era, as it was sanitary and one of the simplest and archaic forms of an altered state of consciousness. It is so steeped into human culture, such an ancient tradition, whether enforced by religion and social norms. But beyond that, I don’t think drinking should be regarded as commonplace as it is.
I am of age to drink, but I don’t. I think that may be why I never understood the fascination with going to the pub with friends after work, drinking a beer with a meal, having every university party be necessitated by alcohol. How did this deadly substance get so commonplace and acceptable? I never understood how people can look at weed or cigarettes and have a strong negative connotation with it since it is an unhealthy substance, but then don’t have that same reaction with alcohol.

Luke Up The North not smoking man. Smoking is bad for you no matter how much you do it. And there are a lot of other things that aren't healthy at any level.of moderation. (You wouldn't do a bit of Heroin or Krokodile would you?)
Yes I think drinking a bit is ok and if you are an adult you should be allowed to do so (with obvious precautions about driving etc.), but saying that everything can be ok in moderation is a wrong statement!

It’s because if you drink, you are in the majority, while smoking/substance abuse makes you a minority.

yeah but like... if you really look at what alcohol does to your body, none of it is redeeming. Even in small amounts, most alcohol is pretty terrible for your body. And obviously smoking is probably way worse, but take something like weed - in small amounts it isn’t that bad for you, but the perception around the two are so different

Hanna Maac well also at some point if you are concerned about health it is also the question how it is related to other things that are unhealthy but are deemed as OK by society. One of the big things is not exercising at all plus eating absolute garbage all the time. If you actually are so concerned about health you should probably be vegan (or at least only eat grass fed free range meats) and exercise very regularly. I actually do this since the pandemic because I felt really bad in the beginning of it and now I eat much healthier (rearly eat meat and if I do I make sure it is very good quality) and I exercise much more!

I was thinking on this earlier.
I have noticed that while in lockdown I no longer enjoyed drinking. Drinking alone holds no joy for me. And that got me thinking about when I do drink, and there really isn't much we do as adults in a social context that doesn't have some connection to drinking. So when I was craving a drink during lockdown, but not enjoying the drink, it was probably because what I really wanted was the social interaction, which we as humans all need.
It's not really a good sign when as a culture we associate human interaction with alcohol. It's kinda scary to think about.

    • @steenbokmds-590
      @steenbokmds-590 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Same here. I guess you are from the USA (from your name, sry).
My experience, my friend group makes plans to do x activity (like painball) and 2 people first question is, are we gonna do a pré? (pré is getting tipsy before doing the main planned activity)
The activity was not planned around alcohol so they didnt go because they wanted to go drunk with friends.

    • @jasonspoons9098
      @jasonspoons9098 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      > it was probably because what I really wanted was the social interaction, which we as humans all need.this is actually studied scientifically, and drug use associates other things with the rewarding activity. So, people can be addicted to the act of doing the drug while not enjoying the drug itself (you can not like something but still want it but thats a different rabbit hole). So while it might be wanting social interaction its most likely because of the association of the action of drinking alcohol with rewarding things

my dad is an alcoholic too and my mom abuses substances. i dont see my mom anymore but i live with my dad. he's okay i guess, but his addiction burns away so much money. right now with covid, he has an enormous collection of cans that he hasnt returned yet since he feels hesitant to go out in public and do too much commuting. but now that theyve been piling up, it really puts in to perspective just how ... much, it is.
just over these last five months, he has collected so many cans that it is difficult to enter the kitchen from one of the hallways.
he can be unpredictable when drunk, swinging from playful to explosive depending on what you say. it does have effects on his health and his motivation too.
i refuse to do substances. i would rather not waste my money on things like that when, as xisuma said, i can enjoy the gift of life with a clear perception, full control over myself. it enhances my enjoyment to confront it realistically instead of through clouded eyes.
the only thing i can say i'm honestly addicted to is caffeine from coffee. whether or not that's a bad thing i am uncertain, but i certainly don't feel any worse for doing it.

I think in the UK there's a lack of internal and external awareness. Internal awareness, in the sense that there is rarely a conversation about alcohol addiction, *actually safe drinking* (not just saying "drink responsibly"), and discussing the negative side of alcohol. I do enjoy a drink but growing up my Dad and I always had conversations about drinking responsibly, knowing your limits, how to recognise you're getting addicted, measures you can take to set yourself to a more healthy relationship with alcohol.
When I was younger I definitely made mistakes, but having these conversations to go back to, and knowing I could always talk about alcohol without judgement, helped me to realise that just because everyone else was happy getting drunk often and the culture puts it on a pedestal that it didn't mean my relationship with alcohol had to be that way.
Also since moving to other countries and seeing the more sensible way they drink made it clear how toxic and pressuring the UK's drinking culture is, especially towards non-drinkers being 'boring' as discussed. In Japan where I live now, there are a lot of people who don't drink alcohol but they will still hang out at the same parties and dinners, nobody forces them to drink, and nobody bats an eye when someone says they don't drink. Both sides are welcome and normal, so even though I do enjoy a moderate drink from time to time I know at any point I can say I'm not drinking and nobody will think anything of it.

I do drink from time to time, but i didn't drink until i was around 18. I started because i was curios, what it feels like and how beer and stuff tastes.
So when I say "from time to time" i mean like once or twice a month I enjoy a beer with friends - and that's it. I never drink more than that, because I know my limits and also I really don't like the feeling of beeing drunk and losing control, which happend when I started drinking and experimenting, trying to find out my limits.
And I agree with you, I think it's strange that drinking alcohol is so accepted in our culture. All of my friends drink, a few of them almost every day - and I am extremely concerned about that, but everybody laughes at me as soon as I start talking about that.
Another very sad point is, that my friends feel they need alcohol to have fun. Since I started drinking very late, I know that I can have lots of fun beeing sober. I can sing like a dying goose and dance like a maniac and I don't feel embarrassed at all, while my friends say they need a few drinks first before they can have fun and sing and dance with me. And that really is sad, that people have the need to intoxicate themselves to have fun...

Here's some data on how the quality of life translates to alcoholism: in 90s Russia, the time of a huge crisis associated with the USSR dissolution, lawlessness and hunger, there was an enormous peak of alcoholism. People just couldn't take it.
But now, 20-25 years later, the alcohol consumption has dropped by whopping **70%** and rarely anyone who was born after 80s ever drinks.
Most of heavy drinkers in Russia these days are those who were drinking back in 90s.

Its really good to hear someone finally speak of it like this. personally I have a very hard time with alcohol, my uncle committed suicide a lot of it because of alcohol and drugs. And my dad was an alcoholic throughout my childhood. After realising those facts I have grown a really big distaste for alcohol, as soon as its mentioned too me i feel scared and anxious. Its gone so far as to having a panic attack. And its difficult, ive lost friends to this issue who i feel uncomfortable with due to them being attatched to memories of alcohol. Lately i have been getting help though and i will go through therapy to somewhat ease my "dipsophobia" as its apparently called, a type of anxiety disorder connected to trauma regarding alcohol. I dont know if this is too much to share maybe but Im really happy to finally hear someone not speak about it positively because every time i tell someone about my view i dont feel understood or somewhat looked down upon. It does not make sense people had a good time if they don't remember it anymore.
Although people I know are open for it, it can still be rough as alcohol seems such a standard at socializing.

I'm an atheist, but I take the Islamic route of "no achohol, period". I believe that alchohol is a scourge on society, normalized to the point of making sober ppl feel like assholes. The fact that within a half hour someone could go from beer to vodka to vehicular manslaughter. Like, look at russia. After men come home from required military service, their vodka decreases their average lifespan to something like 55. When I see my friends (we are teens) get really self conscious when I mention "alcohol", it scares me. And that means that eventually I will have to see someone's life ruined by some thousand year old tradition. Ex. My father never had a huge drinking problem, but around 3 years ago he started drinking from stress from vacation, and he had to go to the hospital for that. I saw my favorite person lie to my face and only admit that he was sick from alcohol OD a month later. Its crushing. I hope to get through life without ever touching alcohol, but some people just dont have self control. When you mention that "drinking culture is close to addiction" I resonate with that, people can be much happier without drinking, like how you can be happier by investing rather that gambling. I would love to see government PSA's and socialized rehab centers, but with america, I know that that's not going to happen.
Great vid, and I would like to see.a follow up if possible.

The worst part is that in my country (Belgium), you need to justify why you don't drink. Alcohol is a poison you drink, it's harmful for the body. You need to justify why you don't poison yourself.

What a wonderful video x. I hear so many things that you said in this echoed in the ways I’ve felt for so long. Especially those relapse dreams, man they’ll really fuck ya up yunno.
I live in America in the pnw which if you didn’t know has one of the most prevalent weed cultures that exists. While weed doesn’t negatively impact you physically in the same way alcohol or harder drugs do, it’s so mentally damaging. For years now I’ve refused to discuss it with any of my stoner friends. The way drugs impact your brain hides the reality of the situation from you and it is just heart breaking to see.
Do you find it odd just how altered our future is? I think drugs and addiction are one of maybe even the most important thing for our species to overcome

Having not consumed alcohol for a while (a month, few months) has been so good for mental health. Less anxiety, less bad mood etc. I have never realized how alcohol alters the mood. It's not like I feel bad the day after I drink. Every time I "enjoy a few drinks" it has longer impact. Weeks or more. And whenever I don't consume any alcohol for a while, I feel so good physically and mentally. And I can't believe I have only now realized this connection. Now I consciously avoid it. And life is better.

I don't think my drinking levels at the moment are on par with the drinking culture in New Zealand which I would've been at or above a few years ago, but every time I do have a drink I am reminded of that escaping feeling so maybe it's a good idea to treat drinking alcohol with the same level of restraint I have for smoking tobacco

They are very much addicted and it just saddens me to see them in that state, thinking they can't have fun without alcohol.

Like the fact your watching this on a smart machine and have access to the internet to talk to people on the other side of the world! That's crazy! And people are so innotive and think of amazing creations, like the phone, TH-cam, Google, windows, ect. I think it has ups and downs, some bits can definitely not feel great, and I have experienced that first hand and when I was way too young. But it makes you stronger as a person and you can cope with things better, and there's always good things, and everyone has talents and everyone leaves their impact on the world to make it better.

My experience drinking in the US is a bit different. I think "getting drunk" isn't as much a part of the culture here as it is in the UK, for one thing. So a lot more people are just having one or two or three standard drinks (depending on tolerance, of course) during a party. There's this area between drunk and sober where you're not acting "stupid" or anything but your inhibitions are lowered enough to make conversations a lot more free and interesting. As someone with chronic social anxiety, this can be really helpful for me.
Of course, I haven't gone to a party in a while, and so I'm not drinking right now. I'm not an addict. But even people who miss partying and having alcohol aren't addicts either, in my opinion. Like, if I were to go for a couple of weeks without playing video games, I'd be pretty sad. Not because I'm addicted, but because games are one of my main coping mechanisms. For a lot of people, alcohol plays that role. It helps them cope. Is it healthy? I don't know. But I can respect that it has a positive emotional effect for some people.

There was but one time where I was shitfaced drunk and that was about 2 years ago on a new years eve where I just ended up playing together with a few friends online. We had fan, let it out and just went for it. For me it was something like: "Letting go of the worries and all that dumb stuff in your head" for once and I remember it fondly because I do remember just having overall fun. We were laughing, yelling (in good fun) and everyone was just in a good mood. Tho I do admit that I barely remember anything in detail apart from one thing: A friend wrote in chat, typo after typo and I was laughing my ass off. I wish I would remember the rest as well but hell, thats just how it went being drunk this much. I havent been drunk since and even tho many wont believe this: It also was my first contact with alcohol lol

I didn't at first and i am struggling with it and so far failing, but I hope with the help of others to get out of it. it scares me because my son when he was younger said "dad your an alcoholic I will never drink". now he is in collage/university and is getting high and drinking. it is hereditary.. i hate myself when I drink. its on or off and to turn it off is hard. like they say "doing the same thing and expecting different results is the definition of insanity. when you don't want to drink and know its wrong for you and still do it is very depressing. this video hit home. I hope some day I can be free of this curse (of my own doing) keep up the great videos my friend. so much knowledge and philosophy form a " minecraft gamer" did you ever think that by playing minecraft you could affect or is it effect so many peoples lives. minecraft gave you the platform to to help so many people that you weren't even trying to. thank you for being you!

I’ve told my friends I don’t wanna drink and they respect it, sometimes they ask (cuz I think they don’t wanna be rude) I just decline. Sometimes they talk about alcohol in front of me, looks at me “approvingly” and either keeps talking or change subject... honestly I’m doing good without alcohol, energydrinks, cigarettes ext cuz if u never try you don’t know what ur missing out on :)

I got a friend that drinks tea instead of alcohol. Just drinking something, doesn't matter if it's alcohol or not, makes it feel more like you're part of it I feel. It's like you're all having a drink together and that's the bonding factor, people often think this needs to be alcohol, but it doesn't have to be nor does it have to be that everyone goes alcoholic or non-alcoholic.
So what I think would help: just have a drink. Be it alcoholic or non-alcoholic, that doesn't matter.

Like @Abby Killed Joel said, you gotta delete it from your phone. I assume phone is your enabler. Phones allow you to lose so much time in social media, mobile games and other platforms that you get addicted to them. When you eliminate phone (and tablets!!!!) from the equation, you have "proper" machines left, laptop, gaming console, TV and PC. For me it's harder and takes more effort to start those and interact with the addictive platforms, so I use them a lot less. I would not start up my PC in the 30 minutes I have to get ready and go to work/school, and i can't use my phone to get my "fix" because that stuff isn't there. I deleted all social media from my phone because honestly it was getting in the way when I just wanted to play Skyrim a year ago. With sleeping, place your phone to the farthest corner of your room from you bed and turn of wifi and data on it, then go to bed without your phone and start sleeping. You will also wake and rise up immediately when your alarm rings. You got it!!

I had that conversation about drinking Soda vs Alcohol, with the punchline: "...but Soda have sugar so is more dangerous than alcohol".
What is a: "yes but no"

I remember my RE teacher in secondary school was talking about how different drinking culture is in mainland Europe. He was comparing Scottish kids to French kids in that, over here, you'll have 12 yearolds going through a a bottle or two of vodka or other spirits, and will go off and do things kids maybe shouldn't be doing in a bush somewhere, while in France it's supposedly a lot different.
As for the bad dreams, my parents both gave up smoking and they occasionally have bad dreams where they've had a cigarette. My brother gave up caffeine and he'll have a bad dream where he's drank some pepsi max or something. I think anyone who's been addicted to something will get those.

1st, definitely think advertising should be cut down & modified.
As for alcohol consumption, the culture is a massive drawback. So many young people start drinking & they don't even like the taste, just do it out of peer pressure. Then it builds in the need for a drink when you go to the pub when you're older.
I think if you do drink or want a drink, you've got to ask yourself "why?". My personal choice is I'll drink some (a glass, max two) if I'm in a good mood, with friends & only something I like the taste of. This is rare cause I prefer to drive than to drink. Then I know I'm in control. I won't take alcohol otherwise. There are so many non-alcoholic options that taste just as good if not better.

Recovered alcoholic here. It happens faster than you imagine. I learned, that drinking was my way to cope with my depression and PTSD. The depression was undiagnosed back then. In retrospect, I had serious drinking issues in my mid 20s at university when something horrific happened to my back-then girlfriend. I regularily used alcohol to get into sleep. I thougth, that with 25, this is not an issue but the foundation for the addiction was layed. Gentlepeople: Be responsible. If you drink, which is in moderations or occasionally (!) too much absolutely okay.
And alcohol is a depressant itself. If you have lows, don't drink. Talk to friends. If you don't have people to talk to, go to the internet to reddit or such and seek help there. You are not alone.

❤️ ❤️ ❤️ Your view so much! I agree completely! I have had & seen more negative from drinking & those who drink(myself included), then anything positive that they think come from it. I don't mind others that do, it is totally their choice, but I chose not to. Most ppl can't use it in moderation. I'm just as fun without alcohol. The only difference is now I don't live with regret & poor choices. It doesn't take much alcohol at all before it actually affects your behavior in some way. To each his own, they have to live with the choices they make. Really appreciated your view! ❤️

@xisumasays Thanks for the Chat. Since the Pandemic kicked off I've been reflecting on alcohol consumption...I don't really drink to get drunk anymore as it is but now that I am at home by myself most of the time...after 2 drinks I cant help but notice how my energy fades and my emotions become more unstable...it's exhausting and don't manage to get anything done. Don't know if I'll go 100% dry yet but I'm continuing to reflect on it. Cheers

In Romania, the culture is interesting. Drinking is encouraged by societal peer pressure: when you go out with friends, if you don't drink you get a couple of weird stares. However, getting drunk is very looked down upon, making you the laughingstock of the event. You don't want to end up in that position.
Also, why would the government make it less desirable to drink (or smoke) when they get so much money out of alcohol/cigarette/addiction tax? ( :/ )

It's a cultural thing, for sure. Because I'm outside that culture entirely, I'm able to have a drink or two here or there, and l never over do it... Because why would I? Very glad to say I've not once gotten drunk. I've been around drunk people, and I have zero desire to join their ranks.
But for those who have, and have been part of that culture, but want to stop, it needs to be cold turkey, and I respect those who need to refrain entirely. It can't be easy!

I have a similar relationship with energy drinks as you do alcohol. I can't touch the stuff again or it's going to be a problem. I actually woke up from a nightmare thinking that I got back in to constantly drinking those. They're so terrible for you! But I don't judge those who can drink one every now and again for a pick me up. They never got addicted like I did.

I really disslike the culture. People often encourage me to drink but I allways refuse to. Alcohol taste awefull, and if I start to like I bet I'll become an alcoholic, as it's easy for me to get addicted to things I like. I like cider but it's not for the alcohol. There are a few drinks that would taste great if it wasn't for the alcohol. However, I kind want to be drunk at least once in my life, but I'm afraid I'll become adicted.

I don't drink, I actually when I started drinking, I stopped, didn't continue. I never actually got drunk, but with my "getting mad at anything" problem, I just got scared with me doing something stupid, because I do a whole lot of stuff to be as calm as possible, but alcohol can destroy all of that easily.

I'm very much in favour of enjoying a nice glass of alcohol, maybe two, and enjoy the fuzzy feeling while drinking water, soda or tea. And only in weekends, usually.
I am really scared that one day they'll start increasing the prices of all alcohol just to deter some from drinking too much. Looking at cigarettes, increasing the price only works when the price becomes absurd. I'd be sad if it would ever come to that.

In Portugal the Government proclaimed that from September 15 th you can not sell alcohol after 20 pm, to avoid gatherings. We Portuguese do not care much because we are back to work and we are without football for now, but many English tourists were very angry and criticized this decision, which makes me angry because my country is entering the second phase of covid

A really bad thing about this is that in Germany, you may drink beer from the age of 16 and not only is it expected you host a drinking party for everyone to get wasted, but all my friends drink to get drunk, not for the alcohol(I do only drink vine and champagne occasionally). None of us are 18 and unless we meet in School, we won't hang out over the course of the day. It's always in the evening to get drunk. I stopped going, but as the oldest of my friends, I'm really scared of the evening of my 18th birthday and offering alcohol to them.
And as you said, they will struggle with it their entire lives, which makes me very sad
