1987 GI Joe Defiant Playset | Retro Review

  • Dan takes a look back at 1987's GI Joe Defiant playset.
    It's big and beefy and weighs a ton with lots of different play spaces and vehicles that detach.
    GI Joe had to do something to follow up the USS Flagg and the Cobra Terror Drome and The GI Joe Defiant is what they came up with.

    My parents were "defiant" in that they flatly said NO WAY when I asked for this for Christmas. The tears permanently discolored my cheeks, and broke the fragile hinges to my heart leaving me unable to ever open up and truly love, so I feel I managed to capture some of the experience of ownership.

    Love this video, largest playset I had when I was a kid was the G.I. Joe Terrordrome still have it, but the one I really wanted was a Fort Max, finally remedied that a few years ago with the Encore reissue, it's everything I thought it would be way back when, awesomeness. Thanks Takara!

      You had that beast? Lucky sucker. I only ever saw it in pictures. John and the rest of the Soldiers of the Future had to make due with my old Castle Grayskull, which by then had been used by not only He-Man but the Autobots as a home base as well. Hand me down H.Q. LOL

    1986 was the last year that I played with toys. I got all the gi joes including the Flagg, Terror drome etc. all the star wars , transformers, he man, castle grayskull, mask, shogun warriors, clash of the titans, matchbox etc. all that shit but this was the one that I should have bought. i remember seeing it in the store and was blown away but I was too old to play with toys and moved on. oh well.

    I was one of the "lucky" kids to get a FLAGG for Christmas...and to this day I regret ever getting it. I still have it with the box. I'm not even sure why my parents got it for me. Between the two of them they made about 12,000 dollars that year. Probably helped that my Dad was huge into toys and made me keep most of the boxes and crap that came with them.

  • @AlmostAnimixers
    @AlmostAnimixers 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The biggest I had growing up was probably Tracey Island from the Thunder Birds, complete with all the hidden compartments for you to hide the Thunderbirds in before takeoff. More recently though I bought the new Titans Return Fortress Maximus. That thing is huge.

    • @SecretGalaxyTV
      @SecretGalaxyTV  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      How old is that Tracey Island? What year?

    • @AlmostAnimixers
      @AlmostAnimixers 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The '90s one I believe. If memory serves, I got it in a garage sale as a kid, back when those were still a thing. There weren't any actual Thunderbirds with it, so I had to buy them all myself (or more accurately, my mum did when I dragged her along to the toy shop). As a result, not all of them quite fit in their little compartments as they weren't the ones the playset was designed for. From memory, the pool couldn't close over the Thunderbird 1 I had, but with a little imagination, I didn't care.
      I've still got it tucked away somewhere. I don't think it's worth heaps, but it's a nice thing to have.

    The largest one I had was a cobra tank that had a detachable submarine? I don't remember what it was called, but it was huge and it was the last joe vehicle I got before I grew out of it entirely. It was retired in the same way I retired all of my vehicles once I destroyed them enough to become unplayable. With fireworks. Yup, I did my part to make other people's toys more rare and valuable. I completely destroyed mine.

    Biggest play set I own is the USS Flagg. That’s a recent acquisition however I do still have my Defiant I received for Christmas in 1987. I have just gotten the few missing parts and repaired the broken ones. I spent 3 hours last night just cleaning the stripped down gantry crawler. Tonight I will start reassembling after dinner. That’s the scary part. I also have my childhood General complete. If I don’t come to my senses soon I will be on the hunt for a Terror Drome in the near future…fingers crossed for either outcome lol.

  • @FrogsAmok
    @FrogsAmok 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Biggest playset I had was the Incredible Crash Dummies Crash Test Center. Despite it's simple design (it was just a plastic base with some walls and spots to add different obstacles) it was a lot of fun and surprisingly durable. I think we tossed it or gave it away during a move. I almost wish I still had it but it was barely holding together after years of brutal testing. Good times.

    • @SecretGalaxyTV
      @SecretGalaxyTV  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Simple design is where it's at with those larger playsets. The Flagg is just a big plastic table.

    I may have mentioned this in one of the other videos, but my brother and I bought this from the JC Penny catalog in '87 when we were kids. Everything in this video is so spot on. It weighed a TON. You could never really roll it anywhere, cause those wheels would snap right off. And it was definitely a two kid mission to crank it up to get it into launch position. We actually still have it, sitting in the basement of my house. Sadly not in the greatest condition, but man, that thing was the best playset ever.

    • @SecretGalaxyTV
      @SecretGalaxyTV  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's something that I wasn't able to get until I was an adult so I don't have any connection to it from growing up. I can tell you that I would have lived in this thing if I had owned it when I was 10.

    I had all the big Joe playsets except the Flagg. Loved the Defiant complex and although it was cumbersome and awkward to move around the house, I managed at 10 y/o. Just don't rely on it's handle to pick it up. It was especially nice that the whole Shuttle and booster were completely finished and not hollow plastic for the undersides. Of the biggest sets, I still preferred the Terror Drome to the Defiant.

    As for the Max Headroom broadcast signal intrusion, it is too bad you didn't post this video on the 22nd, which would have been the 30th anniversary of the incident. I just looked it up because I kind of remember hearing about it back in 1987, and I noticed the date that it happened.

    My biggest playset as a kid were a stack of Books, that can be anything, from a maze that G.I.Joes and Transformers have to walk thru or a building the the Ghostbusters have to climb to get the Stay Puff Marshmallow man. :D
    I was expecting to see more Boba Fetts in the video, by the way.

      That's a great play set structure. I spent a lot of time on a set of bookshelves in my grandparents house that was floor to ceiling and about 8 feet long. Alpine was in charge most of the time.

    I know this is an old video but I’ll still leave a comment lol.
    I was young when these toys came out so I’m going off the scale of my younger self. My largest would be G.I. Joe’s the Cobra Mamba, Zoids electronic battlesauris, or The board game Hero’s Quest. Wish I owned all three still :-(.

    largest play set was probably G1 Omega Supreme transformer (still have it no box though) Largest toy from physical dimensions was the Imperial shuttle from Return of the Jedi. with the wings unfolded it was larger than I was.

    Snake Mountain (which I still have), Kenner's Death Star and Millenium Falcon (which my parents made me give away; boo!), and the G.I.Joe Thunderclap (which is also part vehicle, part playset, so doesn't really count, but I still have it!).

    My biggest set was when I took over my Sister's My Little Pony Castle. I asked to paint it grey because I was using it for battles and my sister hadn't touched it in years. So many castle sieges...

      I always wished my yard had some more natural elements to play with. Growing up in military neighborhoods we generally had a backyard that was about 15 feet x 15 feet of just flat grass. There might be a park (open field) nearby with like... a tree or two. Great places for safely riding bikes... but not a lot of giant rocks or caves or streams or anything else.

    • @Firevine
      @Firevine 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      There were definitely some adventures. I had few friends growing up, but one day one of them and I were wandering around in the woods, and saw water up ahead. No idea where we were. Just wandering around, we happened to stumble across the Chattahoochee River.
      But man...neighborhood friends, video games with your buddies, Dungeons and Dragons...none of it. Kind of lonesome really. My best friend for years was my Atari. Life, man.

    For me, this was the Holy Grail of toys when I was a kid. Close behind it was the Star Wars Imperial Shuttle. Such a waste GI Joe did not continue the space theme. To me Starcom: The US Space Force was the closest thing we got to the Joes in space. Thanks for the video and thanks for the memories. If this was re-released now, I would find a way to buy one, that is if the wife allowed it :)

      Sadly, I think you are right, but then again we did get a huge and updated Castle Grayskull from Mattel not too long ago and the Titan Metroplex, Fortress Maximus, and the Trypticon are very impressive in their size and detail and I just got the Batman The Animated Series Batwing and that thing is huge. I never thought that any of these toys would see the light of day but now I have them all. Hasbro could even do a subscription and sell the Defiant Playset piece by piece like Mattel did with their huge Lion Force Voltron. I would be on board for that.

    • @SecretGalaxyTV
      @SecretGalaxyTV  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      All true. That Grayskull is huge and that Batwing is insane.

    I actually had this as a kid. I'm tempted to share this with my parents, though my memories of playing with this set (and the box that was large enough for me to crawl inside of and treat like a 1-person submarine) are probably better than the ones my parents have of me going off to college and leaving them with this hunk of plastic that nobody could move by themself up until they sold it for $50. Especially if they hear about how much it goes for now.

    30TH ANNIVERSARY MAX HEADROOM HACKING REFERENCE FOR THE WIN!!!
    If i remember correctly the whole thing weighed around 18kg. i got it for my 10th birthday (Nov.1988) & it actually weighed just a bit more than i did at 10 years old & was almost as tall as i was. i was an extra tiny/skinny kid (& i've grown into an extra skinny 43kg adult) & i THINK at that age i was around 17-18kg & it was just slightly heavier than me.

    The club just redid Hardtop in the FFS 6.0 that just started shipping. Don’t think we’ll see a payload before the end of the club, but they did Hardtop justice in my opinion. Just thought it an interesting tidbit if you hadn’t already seen him. Really great segment Dan, and Prod. Greg!! Brought some cool memories back...
