Every know and then I do like looking into pick up videos, but after 10+ minutes max they get pretty boring for me.
As someone who's voyaging into new different styles, videos like these help me to get brand inspirations, as I find that to be the most difficult part (that is, finding brands I enjoy & could imagine purchasing from). So in that regard, I do like them, but only if I find them to contain useful/new information about brands or the specifications of as to why a piece was bought/selected!

so true. it's so important to remember that not everyone is an influencer. especially in the recent weeks/months with tiktok shop taking over. Average people are falling into this false idea that they have the same influence as creators with 100k+ followers who buy clothes that will ultimately generate them more money. Most of us just buy stuff for nothing in return.

I couldn't agree more! I treat my videos as documentation of my growth and evolution in style and what I'm wearing. I think it's really valuable for people just now getting into fashion to look back at older content and grow alongside it, as I did with some of the OG creators when I first got into fashion. I'm sure it's a slippery slope for some people watching pickup content and feel the need to overconsume and purchase an unrealistic amount of clothes, but as you said, that's on them. As for TH-cam being a job, it pays no major bills and only covers my grocery budget lol; however, it's parallel to my real job. Being able to start a brand and create clothing that I can then share alongside the clothing I usually purchase is so fucking surreal. Also, to touch on the "TEN _____ YOU NEED TO BUY" or "FIVE ____'S YOU NEED IN YOUR WARDROBE," I think in a lot of cases, those titles are to bring viewers in and show options/variety, but I doubt anyone expects to be buying even a few of the items displayed. That could just be me and how I watch that style of content, though! On a different note, I've seen a recent surge in content creators popping up with the SOLE purpose of monetization rather than creating valuable/educational content, which I don't get down with, but that's a different conversation. Overall great video Jq!!

I'm glad I was able to create that mental division between influencers and myself at such a young age and realize that getting things that popular internet people have just isn't realistic. This video is an amazing eye opener for lots of people struggling with that itch and I'm glad someone is talking about it. I've been a fan of your work for years and you honestly single-handedly changed my view on consumption. Before your videos I would put all my money into dirt cheap shein hauls but now I make a lot of my own clothes myself by upcycling from goodwill and almost everything I own is second hand. I feel way better about myself and have also been able to educate and help friends with it as well. Your style and curation tips also helped me a lot on my fashion journey and because of your content I now have a wardrobe that make me genuinely happy. Thank you.

I love your commentary on this, because when I do watch these videos, it makes me want to buy things. And I’m in my 50s! On the other hand, I’ve been watching a lot of minimalism videos, both about clothing and lifestyle in general. And I have been throwing, and Thrifting a lot of things, so yeah, I guess I’m that person who is completely influenced by whatever videos they’re watching at whatever time they are at any point in their lives. Maybe I need to talk to my therapist about that.

I've found a quite interesting way to limit my expenses and my will to consume. I got into sewing.
Now if i really really want some kind of design, i just sew it. When i don't have much time because of school or work, it can take weeks to make a pair of pants, so there is no overconsuption. The only fashion items i buy now are shoes, leather stuff and jewlery (and sometimes accessories like bags because i find it hard to work with this kind of "3d" items) because i don't have the skills/equipment needed to work with those.
I understand it's not for everyone but i think learning at least how to alter your clothing (as simple as hemming your pants) is something any fashion enthousiast should at least consider, not only it is useful, but it also gives a very different view on a lot of clothing pieces.

Ohhhh, I love this topic, is not usual see people that is merged into the fashion so deeply think critically about it.
Here there is always 2 point I think is necessary to highlight, one is that even over the idea of the artistically, philosophical or meaningful parts of the fashion world, we are talking about products, items that are made to be buy and sell and have a price and a monetary value, and in that way are susceptible to the advertising and the publicity world, a world that plays with injecting different values (begins sexy and appealing, being part of a group, being successful , etc) and that values build not only a desire but a need in the people to make them consumers, no matter how much the consumer wanna escape that the dynamics of a product are so developed that the influence exist and if the opportunity comes the consumer will fall, because it doesn’t appeal to our living needs, but for our fears, our in securities, our desire to be part of something more big, etc. And for someone that looks a bit of fashion is too easy to make that connection of how a piece of clothing from someone who’s opinion trust or look up, will fall so easy to look for that.
And that connects with a second point and is the celebrity endorsement, that in resume, plays with our idea as a social group that someone that is famous, is famous because what whatever they does have a value, is famous because many people trust in their skills and opinions, and in that way we tend to look to them for validation or guidance. This way of thinking could have been useful centuries ago when the one that was famous was a great hunter that bring food or a skilled chamar that could help people. But in our modern society this bias still exist and can be complex because no matter if the person that gives an opinion have no idea of the topic that is talking about, if is famous and recognized we tent to accept their opinion easily. That’s why publicity uses and need celebrities because people will look after what they do, use or endorse. No Matter if the celebrity just do it for a 30 seconds ad and never uses the product again, the seed of the desire is planted
And with that 2 concepts is so interesting see how people that see the hauls, pickups and such will have so many troubled feeling after seeing their “favorite influencer” talk so kindly about a brand, or look so good using a new item, or tell us a fantastic story of how find a super rare jacket for 5 coins thrifted in a lost store. What people see is “important person uses an item > that item in some way makes them happy or confirms their status > that items are charged with a emotional or social value > trusting or looking up to this person generate a feeling of want to approach > creates a desire for the item maybe the same item or something close to fulfill that made up needs
So yeah is a very interesting topic, and personally can’t really think in hauls and pickups without thinking is an advertising, a really well done advertisement because most times the companies didn’t even needed to pay up it.

I got into fashion like 3 weeks ago and I love Tim Dessaint but his videos definitely present his specific style as the end all be all. A lot of the outfits are fine but most are for men like 30+ and he definitely favors the postminimalist look

Let's be honest here this trend has not come out of a vacuum. It's the same trend as what violent video games experience and also what pop stars and singers experience all the time. It is the thought that people who have followers and clout should be responsible with the way that they weild it because people tend to idolize and imitate those that they like a lot.

I see pickup videos as having a rare dual appeal of 'vicarious unboxings' (see people opening 1000s of Pokemon card packs to give you the excitement of doing so without having to spend money) and the discovery aspect that you mentioned. If you respect a person's style, seeing their latest pickups might put you on to a new brand, piece, or give you an insight into how good particular items are.
To add a point to what you mentioned - I think influencers presenting their pickups makes the items shown feel more essential or have greater value than others. "If you want to dress in aesthetic x, purchasing item y is a must because content creator z just picked them up, and you respect their opinion!" This isn't necessarily a bad thing (after all, content creators tend to consume a lot of clothing so may have more experience with a variety of different brands/pieces), but it's worth being conscious that the specific clothes owned by content creators aren't necessarily better than others or more worthy of your attention.

I don't have an issue with pickup vids if the pick ups are things they personally wanted as opposed to things they were sent or bought on a whim. It only becomes a problem when the pieces are sponsored stuff or the pickups are mindless consumerism (rep haul videos).

the good: fashion pick ups are a good way to learn about different pieces, it can also help you create ideas about your own wardrobe and maybe find possible alternatives since some pieces are expensive.
the bad? it sometimes gets weird, everyone who has wanted to get into "fashion/clothing" youtube has probably started showcasing their wardrobe and almost everyone has participated in that, back then when the "fashion/clothing" youtube space hasn't had much of these content. It felt like a novelty, but now that fashion has begun to rise for the masses. Everyone would want to participate, why? Because youtube algorithm, statistics, impressions, and all that. That's the point of a pick ups video. It's an easy way to reel in viewers because it is the most basic way of sharing your clothing interest and preferences.
touching more onto the pickups problem: i don't know man, humans are fine and all but promoting fast fashion and the implications fast fashion can have like unethical standards and harsh conditions is what makes it annoying sometimes. in "fashion/clothes", but this does not mean that it can go the same for "designer/high-end clothing". Commodity fetishism in the context of how Marx wants it to be contextualized. As long as the clothes feel good right?

You can't really justify fashion overconsumption by saying it's your job, because if thought overconsumption is truly immoral then you would find a different job or a different way of creating content which didn't involve overconsumption, for example if I believe that the oil industry is bad for the environment ( I do) I couldn't then work for an oil company and say that it's for my job so its fine, because if I truly had a strong moral obligation then it would be hypocritical of me to work in that job.

I love being exposed to new styles and pieces and it totally gets my brain moving to thinking of better ways to evolve my style, that's the good kind of pick up video, the kind of video that allows you to take something from it and grow upon your own style. However, when it becomes a magnum ego-fest of showing all this incredibly expensive stuff, id rather stay away from those videos, for my mental and wallet's wellbeing, (I'm into cars and fashion so I'm broke anyway) id also say constantly reminding your audience how expensive a certain piece is really puts me off too, kinda like telling a bad joke and no one laughs, so you keep saying "am I right guys?" until you get some sort of response. Its usually really easy to filter those scum dumpster creators out though. I'll let the opinions of other creators or friends possibly help in some of my fashion decisions/pick-ups but at the end of the day what really matters is what I want to buy and wear and what outfits and colors I want to have in my wardrobe, I think the faster someone who's into or just starting to get into fashion does this, the happier they will be overall on their journey.
That's my two-cents on it, love your vids btw, your videos & frugal aesthetic's videos have really guided me through a lot of stuff I've needed to figure out when it comes to outfits or just about anything, and you guys have also helped me immensely on developing and evolving my style & navigating the fashion world so for that I'm grateful, (if you are reading this) thanks a ton :))

At first you criticize things that infulencers do, like for example when clothing becomes someone's lifestyle and as you recognise the problem you seem to be above it. Then at the end often you do a vlog that kind of shows that you, at least partially, are the person you are critisizing and i get cognitive dissonance. Still great observations tho.

Its really hard to hate something you unfortunately do as a job, In the video I state "it takes one to know one" which is why i even have insight on the issues people like me can bring to the table for people. The vlogs are fun to make and I really do have a passion for clothing/art so its fun to indulge in things with moderation.
