    One of the more appealing aspects of my Triumph is the consideration the engineers in Hinckley, Leicestershire put into making the oil changes effortless. Much like your Harley, the drain plug is on the lowest part of the sump when the bike is on its side stand, and the oil filter placement means it can be removed and replaced without creating a mess rivaling the Exxon Valdez incident. I also like that the engine, transmission and clutch all share a common sump, so when one gets changed, they all get changed. The large capacity also ensures that at any given time there is more oil running through the cooler and sump than there is in the workings, meaning a cooler running bike.

    Hi Penny and Del - Great video! When I was a teenager I had a great job at an oil change business... wonderful for someone who liked cars as much as I did. But we sure did get some stories out of the oil filters - those that were way too tight and those that were in incredibly hard to reach places. Probably the easiest was the RX-7 - right on top of the engine and very accessible! But I digress... always fascinating to watch you at work. Take care, my friends. Be well and ride safe!

    Hi Del, interesting to hear your comments about the torque setting range. In the late 90`s, i worked on the trians for a year and a half installing air conditioning systems to the drivers cabs. To be able to work in the rail depot, we had to do induction courses, and instructional courses. One of the courses was a "Torque tightening" course, which said about the legalities of installing nuts and bolts on commercial and public transport system. One of the things we were told was that you should NOT use any lubricant on nuts and bolts (unless strictly specified or applied by the manufacturers) because it makes tightening the items too easily, which can cause the bolts to stretch under lower torque settings. So to hear your comment brought back memories.
    I can well understand your expression when you undid the oil filter, way way too over tight.

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  ปีที่แล้ว

      Different applications require different solutions.. often you need to apply some form of substance to a thread for it's own good.. 'anti-sieze', 'threadlock' etc.. and they're all in liquid form to begin with, so yeah, an alteration in the torque setting is important.. specially on fragile threads !!

    Good to see you on the Dyna, that should be a bulletproof engine ay Del. Your 3 hole fluid change for Softails is one of my favorites, especially purging all the old oil out -- great tip I reckon, . In Cyprus at the moment, hellish hot here , high 30s, so have been hydrating with lots of local beer -- lovel people. Hi to Lady Penelope, enjoy your weekend, hope you're out on the Dyna. Delboy's Garage.. Awesome video. I did a Harley Davidson Electra-Glide one time and the dang filter was tight I broke a 3 jaw filter wrench and had to the same as you in this video. I mean that filter was way too tight if the 3 jaw filter wrench broke before the filter came loose.. Some people need to read a service manual before they work on bikes and then some people shouldn't be working on bikes. Thanks for sharing this.

    • @Moonfleet41

      Sure thing buddy, there are some clever tool for getting filters off, but in the end the law of physics will be the final restrictor, it's a soft and fragile tin can with no strength, being asked to turn on a superfine thread that's over tightened!... even those fancy ones with a 3/4 hex head on them, I've torn them completely out of the can, which is quite disappointing lol In the end, the grips always work and the good old rubber strap trick if you have the space! Oh and there's my other beef... if it's not hard enough, they put them in a location where you can't get your flipping hands round them!

    I picked up an '02 FXD about a year and a half ago. Had to do the tensioners. Used a complete S&S camchest kit. You missed a perfect opportunity to explain about the oil coming out really slow which means your breathers are in good shape. Nice bike, what year is that one?

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi mate, good point well made, it's a 98 registered, 99 model... so real early one, same as yours though and yes, slow drain can indicate breathing issues, but the breathers themselves never really block as much as the air filter does... the slow drain on this highlighted that the air filter is horribly blocked up and that'll be in a video to come soon!

But my q for you today is every time I watch a video I hear a “chirp “. It’s made me check my smoke detectors LOL!!! It’s not the intros that you do with the birds. It really sounds like a bad battery in a smoke detector. LOL!!! Anyways. Thank you for all you do.

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  ปีที่แล้ว

      On fuel injected Harleys you don't! The idle speed is fixed by the ECU... there are piggy back devices you can buy I believe, but I wouldn't recommend it... a slow idle on a later model Harley can cause problems.

    Great video Del! Hello from the USA. Quick question from an amateur 1/2 weekend mechanic. Lol. Do you subtract the amount of oil you pour in the filter from what you pour directly into the engine?

    • @bill_4359
      @bill_4359 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I have a 2008 H-D Dyna 96 ci. My engine rquires 2.5 quarts of oil with an oil filter. So yes it is only 2.5 quarts and you will subtract the oil in the new filter from the 2.5 quarts going into the engine. My transmission is 1 qt. The primary case is 1 qt.

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi James, quite rightly as Bill said, the 2.5 quarts quantity is total including the filter... personally I don't get too fussy about it, I fill the filter and throw it on, then put 2 quarts in the engine and check the level, it'll be a little low, but it will be on the stick... just run the motor for maybe 30 seconds to purge any air out the system, then measure it... the level's critical more than the quantity (as you may not have got all of the old oil out, depending on how thick it still is, there's always an amount of 'cling' to internal parts)... and of course the final check is when the motor's hot as you'll know.

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For the primary and gearbox I will be, as have plenty of stock left (the Amsoil gear oil is spuberb), but I've upgraded to this engine oil, it's a 20W60 formulation, a little better in this hot weather... a suitable replacement as I've run out of Amsoil engine oil at the moment.

    Why do so many people He-Man the drain plugs back on? I've got a stripped allen drain plug on my Victory (all Victorys use allen head drain plugs) the previous owner went all ham on. Ridiculous. Most plugs are around the 15lb/ft torque range which is literally one handed for a grown man aka not that much!

If you had gone to the trouble of rebuilding and moding🎉 the engine, would sure hope that would have been done as part of the rebuild.
