Happy New Year Glenn. No criticism from me on how you do anything. You do great work. I’m sure the comments that say, “You should.....” get really old. I hope you win a lottery so you can have a big shop to do your work in.
Man ur grease tip on the valve cover gaskets was spot on I just had a problem with mine leaking I replaced the gaskets and I always use some blue rtv but still had a leak so I tried ur grease method and I'll be damned it WORKED!!! 👍👍👍👍 thanks for another great video
I wish I can claim it as mine, but I actually read it in a shop manual. It was a very quick blurb, if you scanned over the page you'd miss it! But yes! It works! I had a terrible leak on the Fastback at the valve covers and that solved it! Thanks for watching, and I'm so glad it worked for you!
Oh on the valve adjustment I set my valves the same but I set my timing at 30 degrees advanced and had overheating issues so I went back and adjusted them on 30 degrees advanced instead of top dead center and the thing is running like a damn dream its running @25 degrees cooler and the horsepower gain is definitely noticeable. Maybe that can help u if u didn't already know but it definitely made a huge difference. I also run a 009 distributor with dual empi 34s on a 1641 dual port 1972 super beetle named bumblebee :) keep up the great work Glenn and the great videos you've helped me a ton by sharing ur experience good and bad lol
we have a big condensation problem here in Massachusetts too. I went out the other day to take advantage of 30 deg weather to work in the garage . problem was the garage was still 15 deg. inside. Everything was dripping within seconds.
Thanks man. Good stuff here. I never really was into beetles or even pre sirocco stuff until I started watching Mustie1 quite a bit recently. I had been subbed to Abom79 for quite a while, so I guess that is why these were in my suggested. I must say, your Elanor vision is making the beetle body style way better, and again you address one of the problems by straightening out the breaking system, and adding rigidity to the frame, another problem with the beetles IMO, adding those Porsche components is a really nice way to do that. Thanks for sharing all the steps, your knowledge, and experience a long the way. I like seeing how you refine your video skills too, you have come a long way in this short time, and I see your hard work has been paying off. Best of luck man! Ok, so 72 now, only wait, I am 93 on the playlist. Hmm, well almost there!
Abom79 is a good man! I'm glad that I come up in his video suggestions! Heh! Thanks the comment! I love VWs in general, but Eleanore is something I've always wanted since I was a kid, so I went with my vision and I am more than pleased with the results! Thanks so much for watching, lots more to come!
DuckmanCycles and VW Garage You bet. I’ve been bingeing on your videos. Lots of good info. I’m restoring a 1971 bug but converting it to an early model as best I can.
Happy New Year! Great video as usual. We get that weather in August. Can't beat those muggy, humid, swamp assed days of summer. Keep up the great work!
August is a different animal here... rain at random, seldom ever for an entire day, let alone a week straight! This is terrible, its raining again and ruined yet another video! 😮
dang man. yeah im my world, the more frustrating the task. the better things turn out. Its coming together nicely. LOL you are making me want to build a new chassis for mine now.
Nice one D-Man your video's are definitely getting better, the time lapse is easy to watch and I like that you can still see the other cameras it keeps it real. I feel your pain about the weather, here in OZ we are in the middle of summer and it's so stinking hot right now I can't go in the shed during the day and you can't do much at night without upsetting the neighbors. Cheers mate and Happy New Year to you.
happy new years. i wonder if that axle grease trick would seal my big block Chevy valve covers i get new gaskets and a month latter they leak with gasket sealer on both sides and it's a pain in the butt to clean the head off with gasket sealer on it but axle grease might be the trick it wipes off plus it sounds like it keeps the cork pliable to make a better seal i think when the snow melts here i will try your tip duckman thanks for mentioning it
Happy 2019 Bud! Really enjoying the latest vids mate. Upgrading the video gear was totally money well spent and liking the production work heaps. All the best.
Another fantastic video Glen. I know this was older video, but I’m curious are you still using the bearing grease on the gasket before you put the covers back on ? I’m gonna try that myself I think.
Absolutely still greasing the valve cover seal! You saw me do this in a video just a few weeks ago on another car! This was something that came from VW's own manual.... it was a very short blurb, but straight from the horse's mouth! RECOMMENDED!
I remember a local Chevrolet engineer who was active in the VW air cooling community, he always recomended to us to use 0,15mm on intake and 0,05mm on exhaust (yes 0,05 not 0,5).
That's a good way to burn valves. The reason to adjust them to .006" or .15mm cold is because the engine expands, and when the engine is hot the clearance shrinks to zero. With a smaller gap, your exhaust valve will not quite close.
Yes! If anything I would say that the opposite settings may be workable... since the intake valves are usually colder. But i wouldn't make an exhaust valve that tight.
How do you know none of the Head Bolts are torqued more than 18lbs? I'm not a mechanic so I'm not sure how a torque wrench works, if you set the wrench at a lower setting than the bolts are set would it click at the pounds you set it at or not until it reached the pounds the bolts are at?
In my case... you don't... but I'm not going to get into that level of precision without actually tearing the heads off... and if I get that far then it's going to get a lot of upgrades. But seeing as how everything on this engine looks pretty damn accurately and properly built I'm going to trust it.
A nuclear explosion! But in reality the studs will probably strip or pull from the case, head warpage,, other bad stuff. I answered your questions here otherwise: th-cam.com/video/pK7TkiOR0to/w-d-xo.html
hey there happy new year swampy lol cheap torque wrenchs do that lol ya could come over borrowed one of my 9 torque wrenchs yes 9 lol i used to torque alot hehe
keep the home garage and keep videos coming,i hate to see people get to big for them selves ,i work from home myself and thats one of the reasons i support your channel also because i love the work you do, but what matters its real home work not something fancy like a big money shop building cars ,its important that people can see the real hard work that goes on when doing it your self, verses opening your wallet to build a car...
Thank you so much for the kind words. I would still like some more space, though... so I don't have to trip over so many car parts in the house! LoL! It also would be nice to just close the door at night without having to bring everything in, and have a shelter from bad weather so it don't get stopped every time it rains. 😀👍😀👍😀 I'll get there, maybe soon!

Maybe, for some stuff.... but could also be more work with how my plan is unfolding.

I think so, but I'm not sure if the torque spec is the same. Might be a good idea to check the manual. Hope that helps! 😁👍🦆💩
