How To Replace VW Alternator/Generator - ROTTEN OLD 1956 VW Beetle - 90

  • Something I forgot to do was test my VW Beetle Alternator the last time we ran the VW Beetle Engine. Things are still good with this engine, as it fired right up even when it was cold with no issues. I replaced the VW Beetle Alternator with another identical VW Beetle Alternator. Replacing a VW Beetle generator is much the same process.

    DUCKMAN - wanted to give you an update... herniated disk, sore shoulders, arms, etc, 40 hours later, my car has it's alternator replaced. A BIG THANK YOU TO YOU!
    For stupid people like me who have a kit-car without any wiring diagrams, if your car does not have an idiot light, the alternator will not turn on. Edit: Duckman talks about this at 16:24 - where he has his test light. I mistakenly thought my idiot light = ignition light.

    15:50 You are a smart man, make a Rig for doing quick diagnosis on VW Engines. A few wires, a couple LED lights, a few Alligator Clips, and a couple more things all in a Wire Chase to keep it safe and look good and then you don't have to do that struggling with all of those loose wires. A couple magnets fastened to the Wire Chase so you can place it on top of the Fan Shroud to keep it all out of the way and then you can quickly set it up and test everything at once.

    What is the power tool called that you used to remove the main bolt ? Is it a normal drill with the attachment or something special?

    • @DuckmanCycles
      @DuckmanCycles  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's probably an impact gun your thinking of, that I used to remove the alternator nuts. Its air powered. I would not recommend a drill because it does not have an impact feature and won't hammer a bolt on nor off.

    • @mariusa9263
      @mariusa9263 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DuckmanCycles You the man. I got rid of my fear and did try to take off the generator per your instructions. The bolt has been painted (Lol) and it is not moving. Is my only choice an impact? Where do you stick the flat head?
      Side note - I also have a lot of dust coming out of the generator... have you seen that before?

  • @GT.Bugger
    @GT.Bugger 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It actually does make a difference which side you fit the shims. They're there to push the pully further out or closer in depending on how many you use in order to position the top pully directly over the bottom pulley.

    • @DuckmanCycles
      @DuckmanCycles  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I am well aware of that, but that wasn't what I was saying. What I said is you have to have 10 and it doesn't matter which side you have them on as long as you have 10. Of course which side you have them on determines the tightness of the belt LOL.... but you still need 10!

    • @GT.Bugger

    Use a coil mount bolts to the case it’s a bracket that fits behind the fuel block off plate you have room. Don’t drill if you dont have to into the shroud. If you swap to duel carbs that coil could be in the way and then you may have to fill holes in your shroud. Cp1 has the coil bracket.

    I have just replaced a generator on my '71 Super Beetle and I have noticed that the first pulley that goes on the generator is rubbing against the generator and it's sptting out metal shavings which I think are coming off the pulley when the car is running / pulley spinning. Any idea on how to fix this problem? Thank you!

    • @DuckmanCycles
      @DuckmanCycles  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sounds like it's not spaced out properly, usually it just sits on a keyway on the shaft... did the key fall out or get lost? That might be your problem.

    Another great video! When I do my own build I definitely want to go with an alternator. Wondering ...
    1) since you don't know for sure what's inside your engine (CC size, etc.), do you think possibly you have a counterbalanced crankshaft? Seems to run super smooth when you rev it.
    2) with the shroud that you selected, do you not need the air hoses that usually run down from the shroud?
    3) which is the best shroud for a Type 1 engine? I've read that the number 4 cylinder (?) runs hotter than the other three because the oil cooler blocks some of the air to the cylinder.

    • @DuckmanCycles
      @DuckmanCycles  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      1. Anything is possible, it sure does run nicely, though!
      2. Hoses are not needed, because stock heater cannot be installed (discussed in several earlier videos)
      3. The best shroud is an OEM doghouse with the oil cooler that lives OUTSIDE the shroud. The reason for this is #3 likes to overheat. #3 is unfortunately in an oddball location, the airflow favors #4... on older shrouds the oil cooler gets the air first which further heats the air (and impedes it some) and the air already has a hard enough time reaching cylinder #3.
      I hope that helps clarify, thanks for the questions!

    • @DuckmanCycles

      an alternator should make 13.8-14.4 at idle, or at speed... the same. The generator answer has variables... like before or after the regulator circuit... At idle a generator doesn't charge much (some say not at all) A generator or alternator doesn't put out a battery though, heh. But the most common size used in a 12V air cooled VW is a (42)
