WOW and cheers to you. Comming out can be so hard. Thank you for being who you are and encouraging kids to be who they are. Best luck with the Word Cup
Kay Burley's interviewing leaves a lot to be desired. "Should it matter?" ... "You big coward". Straight people never have to go through the difficult process of 'coming out''; they can dispense with the whole issue of homosexuality. I question whether the public arena is the best place for a younger person to be subject to that perfunctory treatment. Going by her previous record, I wouldn't allow myself to be humiliated by her in the first place.
Steven, I don't follow cricket, but I think it's wonderful you coming out. And the support you got: incredible. This will help all these young people that are struggling with being gay, and...that if they love a sport they can be gay and still play the sport they love. Thank you so much for doing this interview,
What a great guy! Comming out on your phone is probably not the best way... but when you are a world traveler and you decide this it is the time, you gather up your balls and just do it. BRAVO to this lad
You're right, it shouldn't be news, but until it ISN'T news, we need people from all walks of life to come out, particularly those who may be influential and respected. There are still too many kids committing suicide, getting bullied, being rejected by their families... the more positive 'publicity' we get saying "this is okay", the better. For the time being, until the whole world comes to its senses, let it be NEWS. Thank you Steven!
There's a subtle negativity from the interviewer: Her first question "Why?" her tone suggests "Why on earth would you do this?" "When you have to tell friends and family something that you're uncomfortable with..." he wasn't uncomfortable with it, he mentions this several times. About coming out to family, a friend said to me "If it's important, you should tell them, if it's not important then why wouldn't you?"
she seems like she's being more of an advocate. She's not trying to shame him. she might not know how to say it properly, but she's definitely not being mean about it.
So wonderful that his Dad and Mum understood his coming out . so glad that they excepted it . Most parents never come to terms with their child being homosexual .
@MrSmithAaron101 Ideally, maybe someday it will when government doesn't take something that is private and uses it for public discrimination, or freely allows discrimination based on it.
How's this for ironic: Since coming out, Steve has not played for the England cricket team. I don't know why, but I do wonder.... Pity if that is why, he played well here.
I think she was just trying to make a joke. But in her defence, Kay Burley née Murdochtron has yet to master the human art of subtlety. She quickly learnt how to smile, and is occasionally able to mimic politeness, but any other forms of humanity are beyond her grasp.
With your talent and (at the risk of upsetting you further) good looks, you have no reason to think you're "pathetic". I hope you're taking advantage of that talent. Best of luck!
ooooh. I hope you didn't think the "you" I referred to meant you. Sorry if it read this way. I was just making fun of the often heard phrase that we sometimes hear upon people finding out our dirty secret: ) I agree with your comment though but at the end of the day, some people's acceptance IS important to us so we smile politely. Thanks Korisx
What a lovely lad. The best of British to you, Steven. I can never understand why simply being gay is even considered to be any kind of issue to some people. They really need to get over themselves. Left handed cricketers never feel the need to "come out" do they, so why should gay cricketers. One thing is certain - Steven is NOT the only professional cricketer playing for England and I know that for an undeniable fact.
Does "struggling with their sexuality" really mean struggling with the thought that if they tell their friends and family that they're gay they may be rejected? Why do people have to stand up and tell everyone as if it's such an awful thing? It almost feels like gay people are supposed to apologise for being gay and be ever so grateful if they are not shunned for it. I've never had anyone come out to me as str8. I am sure I would treat them as if they were normal if they did.
I wonder just how many straight women and gay men there are who are watching this clip who are thinking that they would not mind giving Steven Davies a hand keeping his wicket.
Anyone who searches YT to watch almost anything with the word "gay" in the title obviously has problems accepting his own sexuality. CHOOSING to watch a clip titled "Gay Wicket Keeper comes out" & then claiming to be uncomfortable with it has the earmarks of someone who fears his own family's rejection. Please know that you're not alone. Anyone thinking homosexuality is abnormal or an illness needing a "cure" is denying reality. In your heart you know this. Please seek help. IT DOES GET BETTER!
@baneofexistence30 There is no closet for heterosexual people, but that is the point. In daily life people constantly reference their heterosexuality. Let's put it this way, if you are straight and in a relationship, how would you feel about never mentioning your significant other ever to any of your co-workers... if they make small talk with you about weekend plans, how would you feel about saying that your husband or wife is just a "roommate" or a "friend"?
On our side of the ocean, Olympic 2006 Bronze Medalist Matt Savoie just married his partner, Brian Boyle, in a ceremony officiated by an Epicopalian priest. The two men met in law school and now practice law in Boston, Massachusetts. Congratulations and best wishes to both of them! I hope that gay marriage will soon be passed in the United Kingdom, so Steve Davies will be able to marry, as well, when the day comes that he finds the right lucky man.
I know what you mean. As a gay man I hate it when "straight" people insist on putting their "wedding" announcements in the paper. Why must they flaunt their pictures of their "family" in the cubicle at work? I am sick of them forcing their lifestyle choice on me. It is just such a fuss about nothing. Just flaunt it in front of everyone!
As cute and nice as he comes across, I bet there are quite a few people who wouldn't mind keeping his wicket for him. This video is on my "Gay Culture & Life" TH-cam Playlist: th-cam.com/play/PL45128CC608F5DB87.html
I'm sorry if I offended you (or anyone else) in any way, that was absolutely not my intention! It was my attempt to make my views on the double standarts clear, aparently I failed misserably. Obviously I know you can't go thru life without your sexuality comming up. What I meant was that no one expects straight people to "announce" their attraction to the opposite sex, so we shouldn't be expected to do so when attracted to someone of the same sex??! Hope that cleared up any misunderstandings :)
its a cricket position. i was confused too. I was like wtf is a gay wicket keeper? he keeps all the gay people from gettin out? but then I saw the sport they were playing then i realized it was a position
No, the insult is NOT invalid because you did not take the time to find out that "tosser" means someone who wastes time, has nothing positive to contribute to society, is without redeeming values. Good on RosPratch for the comments.
AAAND? AAAAAAND? why this is still an issue is absolutely mindboggling. The day it comes that every professional athlete in every sport can be openly gay is the day we all win. Seriously, AAANND... what, did you get caught smuggling heroin? Why is this an issue?
He's so sweet. I'm so proud of him for coming out.
Thanks he is my uncle
@@eloiser9330 srsly?
Thank you and your story is very inspiring. You are saving a lot of teen lives . Good job mate!
Thanks steven
At 70 years old, I find it inspiring to see such positive gay role models.
WOW and cheers to you. Comming out can be so hard. Thank you for being who you are and encouraging kids to be who they are. Best luck with the Word Cup

The other point to convey to people who are struggling with their sexuality is that it does get better.
"When you told andy flower.....yea, he was absoloutly BEHIND me lol
From the video thumbnail...I thought it was the man who played Oliver Wood as Keeper in Quidditch from HP. "Gay Wicked Keeper Comes Out"
He damn cute
What a great guy! Comming out on your phone is probably not the best way... but when you are a world traveler and you decide this it is the time, you gather up your balls and just do it. BRAVO to this lad

He is very cute...and humble too! A quality hard to find these days.
He seems like a really nice guy
He looks like such a shy, reserved person. wonder if it wouldve been harder for him?...
Thanks for pointing this out. She was just joking. He realized that, and he wasn't offended at all.
At least he knows which team to bat for.
He is adorable.
The way she said YOU BIG COWARD! Was said in jest. I didn't feel she was being rude!!!
What's a hardship when you can't make a joke out of it? It's a lot harder and more serious when you act like it is.
There's a subtle negativity from the interviewer:

Include a CD with computer software of the team and computer desks stuff for the PC...and a mouse pad and a cricketmouse...haha
she seems like she's being more of an advocate. She's not trying to shame him. she might not know how to say it properly, but she's definitely not being mean about it.
Inspirational
Did she said that he was a coward because he texted his mom?!?! Are you kidding me?!?! Is that part of her job? Judging?! So unprofessional.
So wonderful that his Dad and Mum understood his coming out . so glad that they excepted it . Most parents never come to terms with their child being homosexual .
Because in some countries, like mine, it still isn't really accepted. We NEED more inspiration like this...
He's gorgeous and he seems like a nice guy.
@MrSmithAaron101 Ideally, maybe someday it will when government doesn't take something that is private and uses it for public discrimination, or freely allows discrimination based on it.
search 'donal og cusack on late late show' for more sportsmen who've come out
How's this for ironic: Since coming out, Steve has not played for the England cricket team. I don't know why, but I do wonder.... Pity if that is why, he played well here.
He was 100% behind me. We eventually came... lol

how would you feel if you were the one got shipped to the Amazon Jungle ?
I had to google the word "wicket-keeper"....
God, I want he's accent
isn't a wicket keeper from that game on harry potter?
these two are the meanest interviewers I have ever seen..
Why all the fuss? Good onya mate!
ooooh. I hope you didn't think the "you" I referred to meant you. Sorry if it read this way. this is said by the guy who didn't noticed that this comment is 2 months old. i already found out what a wicket keeper is
was he batting for the wrong team?
Good lad!
@TheGreatPakistani
what do you mean by your first comment ?
I wonder if this will ever happen in the U.S.
Clever reply here ... and, yes, they are distracting.
@tomgarify What do you meant by what ?
You are joking? Your comment made me laugh out loud
because hes a sportsman maybe?
0:13 with us in the studio... WHYY?
@TheKenfig what's that supposed to mean?
Good comment.

@TheKenfig Because I fed a troll.

7:00 You are: INCORRECT.
@baneofexistence30 There is no closet for heterosexual people, but that is the point. In daily life people constantly reference their heterosexuality. Methinks that Wicket Keeper Steve Davies and Soccer Player Robbie Rogers, who just came out of the closet today, would make a cute couple.
Oh, make a cricket calendar...who cares...haha Call it Dandy of the Coast or Crickets of the Rocks...haha
This woman has absolutely atrocious interview technique. Good on him :)
@TheKenfig yes, yes
batsman should be scared for sure

steven, i love & admire you more now man!
Wow. My parents would disown me.

This shouldn't be a news story.
I don't know if you are gay or not, but you hit it on the head.
thankyou
hes fookin fit
what a sweetheart :)
What's wicket? And why would he keep other's wickets?
They were asking him to out other players on TV. How despicable!
coming out is a joy and shouting it makes sense so it is not perverse
As cute and nice as he comes across, I bet there are quite a few people who wouldn't mind keeping his wicket for him. This video is on my "Gay Culture & Life" TH-cam Playlist: th-cam.com/play/PL45128CC608F5DB87.html
@cnmcginn Really ?. He is not in the team any more. :(
And this is why I don't watch Sky News.Kay Burley and the 'colleague' sat next to her are abysmal.
Am I the only one staring at his nose?
I'm sorry if I offended you (or anyone else) in any way, that was absolutely not my intention!

@TheGreatPakistani
why ?
Problem is there're not many people like you (us) around. But of course, it gets better :)
no wonder he is a wicket keeper
what's a wicket keeper?
its a cricket position. i was confused too. I was like wtf is a gay wicket keeper? he keeps all the gay people from gettin out? but then I saw the sport they were playing then i realized it was a position
''you big coward''
Argh even when that woman is trying to be nice she is horrible.
Jiminy! Is cricket a real sport?
Good on ya!
No, the insult is NOT invalid because you did not take the time to find out that "tosser" means someone who wastes time, has nothing positive to contribute to society, is without redeeming values. Good on RosPratch for the comments.

i honestly don't know what a wicket keeper is.
Yup, sadly double standarts are still alive and kicking...
now think he'll be married to Kevin Pietersen in few years!!!
He could keep my wicket any day of the week O_O
@TheGreatPakistani
what ?
"you coward" that presenter needs a slap!!
beautiful boy.
