    What Lesley effect is used at 7:00? It sounds great.
    I lean more to the EV classic here. It adds more musical character. You can always blend the speaker with something else to get the top end clarity in the room or recorded if desired. I didn’t think the BL really sounded all that inspiring - very linear with hint of top end detail but flat everywhere else.

    EVM12L is a monster! Had a Boogie MkIIc with one, and that amp was LOUD! EV could anything you threw at it.
    Great demo! Shows the awesome clarity of these speakers. They are really good sounding, but they are seriously HEAVY. loading a cab with one will increase its weight significantly. That Boogie weighed 60+ pounds

      @ZillaCabs  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      haha I see you are quite a fan of EV's, they are a great speaker, watch out for a video we have coming up in a few months, it's going to be a Lonestar loaded with a pair of EVs... and yeah you're right, they are damn heavy things.

      I have a mid-80's Boogie and with the EVM12L it weighs well over 70 lbs. So what do I do. I add a road case. Now it weighs over 90. YA. But it's wood and wicker so gotta protect it. P.S.Ooh ya forgot to mention I also own a Twin and the Boogie is heavier. 2-12's and bigger but just a little lighter

      What do y’all think about jbl d120
      Grey or orange baskets
      I love them in the fender twin
      But damn it’s heavy
      Worried about blowing them too
      It’s a 135 watt head and run the power section pretty wide open
      Between 5 and 8
      And set channel gain up to around 3 or so
      It’s crazy transients but paired with a mid forward smaller tweed style in stereo or wet/dry is amazing

    in your opinion. Is or isn't the 300 watt EV12L Black label speaker too big to use in the studio? I think 300 watts need more volume power to make the speaker move and vibrate correctly. While a speaker like a Vintage 30 Celestion should be more manageable as it is more easily stimulated. What do you think?

    Finally figured out how to word what I think. I love the bass and bass response of the Classic way better then the Black Label but love everything else about the Black Label more.
    Too bad there isn't a way to get the low-end of the Classic but with the smooth rounded highs and mids of the Black Label.

    • @TheNocturnalEvil
      @TheNocturnalEvil 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The bass response of the Classic isn't as neutral as the Black Label, it has a mild hump in the low mids, maybe the lack of linearity makes it sound better. The bass response of Black Label is almost linear and clean like a PA speaker. Then again the Black Label is a reissue of old EVM12L Pro-Line speakers.
      Back in the 80s when Electro-Voice designed the Pro-Line speakers they designed them to be more neutral and to have more headroom than the Series II speakers. The EVM12L Classic is the re-issue of EVM12L Series II speakers. Since the Black Label is the EVM12L Pro-Line re-issue it sounds more linear and neutral than the EVM12L Classic.

      Hi Felipe, the EVM12L is a cleaner more precise sound, the Alnico cream brings in more warmth and colour in to the sound. What kind of stuff are you playing? They are both great speakers.

      I have a Mesa Boogie Thiele 1x12 and a Mesa open back 1x12. Both loaded with EVM12Ls. I like the open back for clean sounds as it let's the sound breath a bit more. Also, anything Fender related, the open back compliments it well. Mine is noticeably louder and brighter than my closed back. Speaking of which, the closed back is very punchy and a bit boxy, but the more you crank it, the less the latter seems to be an issue. In the Thiele, there is definitely a high end roll off, but it compliments bright amps well. You can't go wrong either way, just have to take note of which setup is most appropriate for your rig. Once you go EV, it is hard (at least for me) to go to any other speaker. Hope this helps, take care.

    • @olmocascallar5463
      @olmocascallar5463 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have both setups, and IMHO, open back doesn´t work with distorted/ high gain sounds. Too harsh, but with cleans not so bad... I definitely would go for the thiele cab.

  • @NINEWALKING
    @NINEWALKING 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Maybe there should be some revisit of the TL806 cabinet and EV 12L comparation. Namely perfect candidate for it would be the Celestion Neo 250 Copperback. You could also revisit flat back gray version and ribbed black version as well if you could find any o those older models. Gray flat back was produced in big numbers I believe and is often available on second hand market. I haven't seen black ribbed (with sort of cooling ribs) version that often though.
    Just yesterday I have assembled new cab for my testing rig. I was kind of nostalgic for the Mesa Boogie Thiele Small cabinet sound and looks. I did not like their weight though. So I have assembled Thiele Small TL806 clone cabinet with Celestion Neo250 Copperback.
    I wonder how that speaker is not recognised by people. It is actually super light version of the EV 12L. Something everyone who ever carried any cabinet with any EV XXL variant should have wished and dreamed for. Speaker itself is only 2,3 kg per unit.
    It is Celestion guitar speaker but it has no ribbed cone. It has the same size 2,5" voice coil as the EV 12L, dislike any 1,75" voice coil of almost all other G12 speakers from Celestion. It has the same impregnated textile surrounding. It has same size and material dust cap. It has 250 Watt rating. And most importantly it sounds as the member of the EV 12L family. From 5 different generations and variations of the EV 12L they all sound a bit different anyways and this Celestion is sounding very similar to some of them. It has that you can't bring me to my knees thing. It has that low end and in some cases very strong top end.
    It sounds very good actually. Plus it makes for the very light weight super powerful 1x12. While TL806 with the EV 12L is feeling like you are picking up something made of solid metal.
    I really wonder how it was not a hit and big success for the Celestion.
    Lot of people think it is a big cabinet if they see pictures only. But in real life it is very small cabinet. Sure it is deeper then some 1x12 cabinets but the front it is as small as they could make it to fit the speaker and ports. EV really was doing their thing. PA speaker. But they came with something that sounds pretty good for the guitar speaker. PA speakers go for the compact size and efficiency. Exactly what TL806 with EV 12L is.
    Until you hear what comes out of that small cabinet you can't believe it. If you place it vertically with ports towards the ground bass coupling is humongous. It definitely gives run for it's money to any 2x12 with medium magnet size speakers. Literarily if your have 2x12 cabinet with 97 dB/W/m sensitivity speakers this 100 dB/W/m speaker should be as loud when it gets supplied with the same power. Plus it will go lower down as well. Especially if you opt to close off the middle port. In closed middle port variant and standing upright with the port down it sounds more like a 1x15 or 4x12 regarding to the bottom end.
    It is just surreal.
    BTW if you like speaker break up forget about those speakers. There is almost none at any power level. They have their sound but it is not created by the speaker breakup.
    You can hear more of the amplifiers character as well. But it does not fit all of the amplifiers either. Some amplifiers require speakers that give up a little and gets softer with more power. This combination might be just to ear piercing at the top end with some amplifiers. It doesn't fit some more modern Marshalls while it does fit with anything Fender-ish that said as in the broad strokes because some high gain amplifiers do sound good with it.
    Anyhow I am enjoying my creation a lot. It wouldn't be my only cabinet for sure but for some setups it is just brilliant. I am loving it clean and with specific new model of the amplifier I have just designed and built.
    And in drop D it is just silly what comes out of this cabinet. I can't imagine what baritone or bas six would sound played true this.

I have 8 of the older original EVM12Ls. I don't like the the classic compared to them though. And I still prefer my old greenbacks for low wattage amps where I'm trying to get overdrive from the power tubes. That sound needs a speaker that will break up quickly. The EVM12L will not.

    BL EV was a tad bit warmer with more character in the highs. Tad bit less sterile.

    To my taste you can't use the black lable EVM for clean sounds. For Metal the scooped frequency may be adequate.

    Does anyone really need a 300W speaker? I've got the 200W in my Mark IV and it's just painful, both for my ears and my back. Wonderful speaker though. This cab sounds awesome!

    • @ZillaCabs

      I put it down to clean head room, so you probably wont use the power but the speaker should work in a more uniform way through your volume changes. They do sound great in a Mark iv... but you know what, so does a neo creamback ;) ... when it comes to it though, if you want that EV sound, nothing else will do it.

    the Black Label sounds more scooped, but i think it's due to the nature of being Zakk Wylde's sig Speaker.

    • @TheNocturnalEvil
      @TheNocturnalEvil ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No, it's because the Black Label is a re-issue of the 300-watt Pro-Line EVM12L.
      Unlike EVM12L Classic which is a re-issue of EVM12L Series II the Pro-Line was never meant for musical instruments. It was meant for usage in PA systems. Zakk used it because that's what he had.
      It doesn't have a scooped mid-range, its mid-range is neutral like a PA speaker. The EVM12L Classic on the other hand has its mid-range voiced for usage with musical instruments.

  • @robvoyles
    @robvoyles 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The classic is very dry- mid rangy and the black label's mids are a bit scooped and not as dry, other than that, the same speaker.

  • @thestupendouschumley

    I had the original 12L (now the 'classic') rated at 200w RMS in a Sonic 1x12 cabinet. Problem was I had a Galien Krueger 250w RMS guitar head from the 70s. Then my son (the catalyst) blew out the EV coil cranking it. So now I've decided to replace it with the 300w RMS 'Black Label'. $300 hurts for play money though. I think it'll sound nice with my '62 reissue Mary Kaye Strat. After I fix the scalloped end of the nut slot on the headstock he blew out changing the nut!

    That's a 1x12 bass cab.

    • @ZillaCabs
      @ZillaCabs  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It a bass reflex cab but that refers to boost in the low frequency like most ported 1x12 cabs. The 12L is a guitar speaker, it was used for bass in the past but that was mostly because there weren't that many decent bass speakers on the market, and the TL806 was specifically designed for the 12L. I hope this helps.

    • @bb_lz9790
      @bb_lz9790 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you look at the plans for the TL806, the F3 is 83 Hz in the normal mode. If you build it with the partial port cover (known as the step down mode) the F3 is down to 53 Hz but you have to boost low end by 6 dB.
      In the normal mode they sound pretty good for bass, but the low end is lacking. The EV mids are yummy though!

    The 12l original is a pa speaker, never designed for guitars. But guitar players are perverts and they liked him...
    And the black label is a 12l too, the pro-line as OEM, only difference is the watts.
    If u want much more differences get an 12s....

      They aren't for everyone, I'm normally more more into speakers that colour the sound a bit more. Maybe you would prefer them in an open back cab. That EV designed cab is pretty small. They do cost a lot of money, that is for sure. They are a big speaker but yeah they are on the high side. Thanks for listening.
