  • 2020 was a devastating year for many reasons. With this special episode we honor those performers and filmmakers who joined us to share their memories of working in the western genre. We also pay tribute to others who made contributions to westerns but were never able to participate us at The Autry Museum to discuss their film history. Who was your favorite from among those we lost? We, and future generations, will always have their work to savor and enjoy. We thank them all. May they Rest In Peace.

We’re at the grand Hotel in Disney World a couple of decades ago and a gentleman bumps Into my chair as his party is being seated. I turn to give him more room and look up and see Robert Conrad apologizing to me. Our whole table recognizes him immediately but we all just say good evening. During the dinner our waiter comes over and whispers: do you know who that is? We say whats he famous for? The waiter replies he’s the guy on the energizer battery commercial as we we try not to laugh. As we get up to leave Mr. Conrad looks over to our party and says-so that was the highlight of my career for that guy Huh? And we all shared a good laugh over that. One of my favorite actors and thanks again Rob for this wonderful tribute. They just don’t make them like this anymore.

Linda Crystal on High Chaparral won my heart. I'm a die hard fan of Crystal. I still watch reruns when I can. The whole cast of this show was excellent. A friend met Linda when she made a personal appearance where my friend was security guard, he said, " she's as beautiful as you could expect and as sweet to her fans as you could hope."

for his ability across a wide range of roles, including comedy (Those Magnificent Men In Their Flying
Machines") and war (The Longest Day). His Western series "Cimarron Strip" was a "pleaser" back in the

Lonely are the brave was one the best western movies that truly showed the changes that took place in great open ranges in the west. The emotions portrayed in the film really grabs the the viewer and gets one invested from start to finish. All the great ones are gone and the new crop cannot hold a candle to any of them. I miss what the industry used to be.

It meant so much to me to see Linda Crystal, Stuart Whitman and James Drury mentioned in this piece. For people like me, they were very important and memorable. The passing of any of our favorite stars is always a sad thing, but one thing is for sure, they will live forever in the movies and television shows they made. Watching old Hopalong Cassidy movies, or John Wayne, or Audie Murphy movies, makes it like they’re still here, and like it’s Saturday afternoon at a double feature at the Texas Theater, where we could get a large Coke and large bag of popcorn for a total of 25 cents. Yes, they’re gone from our physical world, but they play on forever on the silver screen.

Thanks Rob for yet another great video. While I was aware of the loss of most of these talented artists at the time of their passing your video drove home the large number we lost in 2020. Thankfully many of their greatest performances are still available on TV or streaming services.

"Lonely Are the Brave" - great western of an old fashion cowboy (at heart) in a modern day environment.
Horse's name was "Whiskey". And Walter Matthau as the sheriff. Carrol O'Conner (Archie Bunker) the truck driver.
Oh yeah, AND Bill Bixby (Courtship of Eddie's father; My Favorite Martian, The Hulk) was the search, military helicopter pilot. (I believe his first screen role)
Kirk Douglas came close to having a catastrophic fall in that loose shale at the mountain summit & it;'s evident; a dangerous scene to film.
See the movie, if you haven't. I think Kirk Douglas I'd miss the most. A legend.

I had not heard Linda Cristal had died. As a kid I never saw the High Chaparral. I don't know if that show was not on stations near me or, if it conflicted with other shows I watched as a kid. But, for me her most memorable performance was in Mr. Majestyk which is still, despite all the explosions and CGI of today, one of the best action films ever.
