Fresh out of the shops!! BNSF daygo thunders by Irvine station w/ brand new NCTD rolling stock!!

- Man what a night! On this short night Railfanning, I headed to Irvine to see this glory of a BNSF daygo. There is two reasons I did this: 1. To get an actual good shot of the Coaster with better lighting, 2. Because I didn’t know if it would end up at El Toro siding as tracks were stated to be closed (they got opened back up for daygos). Anyways, on this night, I got a heads up about this daygo coming down south with the coaster’s in the back. I spent about 5 minutes discussing with my dad on my plan, he agreed and took me to Irvine. I only had to wait a literal minute until I arrived at Irvine to see the lights of the BNSF locomotive leading down the straightaway track from Tustin. About a couple minutes later, the daygo approached and then thundered by with 4 BNSF locomotives leading. Leading was BNSF ES44AC 6297 with a neat consist trailing with the locomotives being BNSF C44-9W “H1” #967, ES44EV 5739, and standard GP60 #179. That took me by surprise to see that consist as I didn’t really get a heads up on the power. As the daygo was passing, I noticed some variety of clean autoracks. If you noticed, the clean autoracks I think were both brand new UP and brand new CSX autoracks, pretty cool. And if you also noticed this which is also pretty cool was a Grand Truck fallen flag autorack. Aside from that, I feel like the whole daygo was just autoracks and tank cars only. Anyways, as the daygo was passing, I saw the rear of the train come and in the back were 2 BNSF DPU’s being ES44DC 7011 and another ES44EV 5726, and attached to those DPU’s were the squeaky clean brand new NCTD Coaster cab car and coaches. And I’m glad I stood on the right side of the platform as on the other side, you would have noticed graffiti on the cab car. But, as on the side I was standing on, it didn’t have graffiti. The Cab Car #422 is a series IX (9 in Roman numerals) CEM Cab Car built for multiple commuter services in North America who chose to run a safer cab and coach car, and that was said it self from the companies CEM and Metrolinx I believe. Speaking of Metrolinx (not Metrolink), the 3 other coaches behind the cab car were made by Metrolinx to insure a safer and cleaner ride with newly refurbished interior from the older bombardier series. These coaches were numbered being #4201, #4206, and #4205. I will say, the CEM cab car looks amazing in Coaster phase 2 paint because a lot of Railfan’s dislike the CEM cab cars like me (besides coasters). In the video, when I labeled the NCTD cab car, I put “series XI”, I meant to put “series IX”, I forgot what series the cab car was, although it’s not a mistake to care about

Wow, new Coaster Bombardier Series IX cab cars and coaches! I wonder why the new Coaster Bombardier Series IX cab cars aren't numbered in the continuous 2300-unit series. Same for the new Coaster Bombardier Series IX coaches why they're not numbered in the continuous 2200-, 2400-, or 2500-unit series.
Well I think because this is a new series of rolling stock, they numbered them in a different series so that’s why it’s the 400 series and not 2300, same with the coaches, it’s not bombardier, it’s metrolinx.

Even the BNSF freight train was DPU powered.
Kind of crazy how all the other Coaster cars are in various 2000-series. But with these new coaches and cab-cars, we get 42101-42108 and 421-423.
I’m even more baffled at the fact Coaster couldn’t number the new cab-cars 401-403 if that’s the direction they wanted to go in.
I know! Man it’s crazy what coaster did to the series. If Metrolink, for instance, got these, they would follow the rotem cab car series and start at 700

@@TheTrainEnthusiasts same, I think the CEM’s look best in coaster with those colors, although Sounder #2 for sure. It’s going to be a neat change for us Railfan’s and adapt to these new cab cars, but we think I’m fine with it. Gonna be cool to see these in action.

Thanks!! Yeah, I think they’ll still run the older Bombardier cab cars, or turn them in to passenger cars, but those cab cars still got many years in them even if CEM’s are about to start testing and enter service. And I get what you mean by that curve look lol.

I'd be surprised to see these in service when I visit San Diego for a rugby match this July or if they add a few extra trains to the weekend timetable when these enter service. Looking forward to seeing posts of them running.
Well, it won’t be any surprise, testing is suppose to start in 2-3 weeks, and if they pass, they start service that week. So by then, you’ll see them running.
Where’d you hear? Good to know that testing is starting soon. Probably should expect 421 and 423 before the graffiti’d 422.

These came from a facility in Utah and came down my line
Why did they have flat cars between the passenger cars? When they are in service, they will be coupled together. Why not now?
Flat cars are used as buffer cars to not cause damage. It will enter service (from now) in April, maybe a bit earlier, but the entire fleet has to come down to the NCTD facility to undergo other tests and maintenance, and the tracks are closed right now so that’s why it’s in April.
why did they number the cab cars in the 400 series instead of continuing the 2300 series?

Wish they added more power/USB C outlets on those cars instead of having them in the table seating only. You know how crowded they get during the weekends.
I can 100% agree with you on the outlets. They should have them at every seat than just those table ones, that is a problem I have every time I ride those cars.
When was this filmed? I heard the l tracks in San Clemente are currently closed
This was filmed February 7th, tracks are only open to freight trains not passenger. But some days they are permanently closed
How do you know when freight is going to roll through? We were just down there 2 weeks ago train spotting and wondered how to know of freight schedules.
So there is no freight schedule, 95 percent of BNSF freights don’t run on timetables, they either run on daily basis from certain locations, or on some reported delivery that needs to be transported by train. But, there is a thing called PSR which is “Precision Scheduled Railroading” that is rarely used on class 1’s now a days, but you can commonly find it on branch lines or short lines. So the info I get from this is usually a friend or an anonymous report from someone else.
What are your thoughts on those new cab cars?
Better for the safer, the people, but not the looks, besides the paint (is it me or it looks like a fish bowl)
I’d have to agree on that. In my opinion I think they are a little better than the Rotem cab cars but that’s completely subjective. I do like the Siemens cab cars that Amtrak will be using
