I would do a summer scalp but temperatures are 100+ and no rain on weeks or foreseeable future. I will settle to watch you fix yours.

My backyard has a few spots that looked just like what you have. I was uncertain how to treat not knowing if it was a fungus or grubs. I spotted grubs and you advised me to throw down some Duocide. I did that and dead beetles were everywhere. I have treated twice using Dirt Booster and Green Shocker and also used light layers of top soil and stolons are just flowing across the soil. I am also watering in 5-minute increments at 5 am and again at 5 pm. Due to the continued triple digits here in San Antonio, I am not cutting as low but my front lawn is beautiful and those bare spots in the backyard are coming along nicely. I just re-ordered more Dirt Booster and Green Shocker. Amazing products! Thanks for sharing your valuable expertise Doc!

I’m so excited for this video. I have a 6x 10 front lawn I have to keep alive in Arizona and it’s yellow. 😭 I have 2 weeks to revive it .

How hot is it there? I want to do the same to my yard, but I’m in Texas and it’s close to 110° and we’ve been without water for several weeks.

Wow... those brown spots look just like my lawn a few years ago. Grub worms. Just dig between the brown and green grass. You'll see them. Hope you get better soon!!

Glad you're on the mend, Doc! My bermuda is looking a little sparse in areas as well so I might follow your advice and perform a summer scalp. I got an email from a turf vendor a few days ago that said that army worms were showing up early this year so might need to look at that as well.

Doc, I'm looking forward to the watching the restoration. Sorry to hear you were sick for awhile. I recently put down 8 lbs. of Zenith Zoysia seed on about 4,400 sq. ft of sandy loam soil here in East Texas, right in the middle of a long stretch of 100+ degree days and very little rain. If it wasn't for the irrigation system, I'd be screwed. After the prep, which including tilling, leveling, Andersons Biochar, Duocide, Dirt Booster Plus and a 70-30 mixture of 10-10-10 and Greenshocker. The Zenith Zoysia seed went down on July 8, and first seedlings appeared on July 15. Keeping everything moist. Except for the frequent watering, I'm going to leave it until it's high enough to mow. Then I'll be supplementing with Dirt Booster Plus, Greenshocker and Humichar. Any suggestions you might have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for all your videos (and your webpage), which I've been watching closely for over three years. They have been a tremendous help.

A few weeks ago, I wasn't feeling too good, and we were getting like 2 inches of rain every other day, so my hybrid Bermuda lawn got over two inches tall. After I started feeling better and I had a few dry days, I cut the whole lawn 1-3/4 inches then 1-1/4 inches while mulching, a few days later, I scaped it down to 3/4 of an inch, bagging all the clippings because they were mostly brown stems. It looks like crap now, and I have a serious sedge problem, but I wanted to reset the lawn so I wasn't scalping it so much at 1-1/4 inches. I want to do a bunch of stuff to improve this lawn, but my health is keeping me from spending too much time outside in the heat and humidity.

Does it have to be cut as low as you did in order to effectively put down the duocide for grubs?

Definitely will be interesting to see the progression for sure. I've been having some issues with my Zeon Zyosia looking like there might be a fungus issue or if it is too stressed from the heat and lack of water. Hard to tell for me anyways. Didn't think I should fertilize at this point during the summer but since it is good enough for you, should be good enough for me. Don't have a reel mower to scalp so can't do that as the EGO's lowest setting leaves my grass at least 2 inches tall.

What's a good way to diagnose a hot spot (dry, dead grass) whether it's a bug problem, fungus, or something else?

Hey Doc, Have you ever tried Milky Spore for grub control? I used it several years ago to get rid of them. I have had no issues sense. This season have had some brown patches due to heat stress, so am reseeding those areas. The rest of the yard is looking good.

Doc, my 25” McLane arrived and I love it! Made two cuts and the results on my Zoysia is amazing. One problem - my irrigation guys must have stripped back and tossed a 6” piece of copper wire which I missed on my pre-cut walk. The result is a small nick on my bed knife. Using a small fine file cleaned it up and lightly smoothed out the 7 blade reel. It no longer hits the bed knife such that there was a ticking sound every time the blade passed the bed knife. I’m getting a solid paper cut across the blades but am concerned the bed knife may need to be replaced. I would show pictures if you have a way to receive them. Appreciate you thoughts and recommendations. Thanks
